Stay safe!

Good morning!

Hope you're all ready for some serious wind and rain!

We will not have a test Wednesday as a result of today/tomorrow being cancelled. Hopefully we all keep our power and are back at school Weds! When we return we'll practice chapter 8 some more (for about 2 days) and then we will have a test, most likely the first grade of our third quarter.

I look forward to seeing you all soon! Enjoy being stormed-in!

(If you do lose power, this might be the perfect opportunity to read some chapter 8/do some studying, or maybe even read chapter 9 to get ahead...just sayin...)

I can't believe I forgot to post yesterday...

Broke my streak of posts. I'm sorry!

Tonight, enjoy some Algebra....writing linear equations, interpreting slope, y-intercept.....yay!

Quiz tomorrow--5 min! "Is a linear model appropriate?" and "Find the equation of the LSRL using your calculator." After grading/stamping your stamp problems from today, here are a few pointers....
  • Remember you're looking for random scatter in the RESIDUAL plot, not the scatter plot
  • When you explain your reasoning, make sure you say there is/isn't a pattern in the RESIDUAL plot. Be specific.
  • Draw the residual plot!
  • Don't forget the other two conditions!
    • Look at the scatter plot (L1 vs. L2 most likely) for outliers.
    • Don't just say "the variables are quantitative." You have to tell me what the variables are!
Also, I started working on #1 with some people after school....it's really just a ton of Algebra. Maybe this will help?

Take Home Test!

Hopefully you're all feeling confident after today's exam. I'm looking forward to examining the grade data and evaluating our performance for the first unit!

This weekend you have you last "Unit 1" assignment--to complete the 15 multiple choice take home test provided in class. If you lost it or need one (Brandon!) I've uploaded it under our classroom resources. Look in the "Assignments" section (scroll down) to find "Unit 1 Take Home MC Test."

On Monday we'll begin our next unit, bivariate data. If you're feeling ambitious and would like to get ahead, take a look at chapter 7. I'm pretty pumped to get into it.

Tomorrow's the big day....

STUDY. Then, STUDY MORE. Then, study some Chem for your quiz, too.

Tomorrow will be a nice opportunity for you to test you're learning to this point in AP Stats. I'm looking forward to seeing the results,and of course wish you all the best of luck (but you won't need luck if you study).

Here are a few more tidbits about tomorrow's exam:
  • You do not have to create any graphical displays by hand or on your calculator. All questions based on graphical analysis come with the graphs provided.
  • The Normal model question is similar to the "Storms" problem we did in class (remember, Minor, Kinda, and Super storms?)
    • And don't forget invnorm() problems. You need to know how to find the cutoff for the "top 20%", for instance.
  • Study your boxplot quiz we had--tomorrow you'll have to compare two boxplots
  • Make sure you know how to determine outliers!
  • Make sure you know the relationship between the mean and median dependent upon shape (in class we folded a paper into three columns and took some notes on this topic--study this!)
  • Independence--know what it is! The test question is just like #20 from our recent homework (p. 131)

VOCAB TEST TOMORROW!

First off, just skimmed through the AP Stat facebook group, and I'm loving it. It seems like it can be a great resource, everybody should be in there. I love seeing people answering and asking questions, etc. Fantasticness. #davidw.samantham.pauld.jamell.xavierc.kevinh.jacobc.cindyt.

As for your vocab test...here are some more specifics for tomorrow.

1. This is a test of responsibility as much as it is statistical content. It is of the utmost importance that you study hard and start off with a successful first test. If you have any questions throughout the day (regarding definitions), email me at fred.carofano@gmail.com. I'll be out all day so I won't have access to my school email, but these will find me via smartphone.

2. There are 21 words to match. Four words have two definitions. These four words are: outlier, standard deviation, interquartile range, and Normal model.

3. Then, you have to name at least 3 displays for categorical data, 4 for quantitative data, and draw three distributions with a given shape.

4. Make sure you know about shifting and rescaling!

5. Brush up on what a contingency table is!

6. Study the difference between a parameter and a statistic.

7. To identify skewed vs. symmetric distributions, you must know how the mean and median relate!

  • Skewed Left: mean < median (because the mean is pulled toward the unusual, low values in the tail)
  • Skewed Right: mean > median (the mean, in this case, is pulled higher, toward the tail)
  • Symmetric: mean = median (well, they'll be close to equal. Here, the high and low numbers "balance out," and the mean is not impacted in either direction)
8. Make sure you know the relationship between standard deviation and variance.
