Everyone's favorite day of the week...back to work.

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook: (starting some review homework so we're ready for that huge unit test when it comes...)

Page 131: 1, 3
Tomorrow we'll get into chapter 6--and I'm pumped!
Also, we will have a QUIZ THURSDAY (nothing new will be on it, but I want you to have 2 possible days to come after for help, Monday and Wednesday). The quiz will include the following:
1.) Create 2 boxplots WITHOUT your graphing calculator
2.) There will be some follow up question either asking you to compare the boxplots or interpret them in some way.
3.) Match 5 histograms to 5 boxplots.

It's the Weekend!

We made it to another weekend! Time is flying by...we're getting close the last chapter of our first unit even!

This weekend please complete the "comparing boxplots" problem regarding one of Charles Darwin's experiments. This is very similar to an AP style problem for this topic. The problem is on the back of the paper where wrote "your response" and then a "class response" about brainteaser completion times. If you can't find it, it's uploaded under our Classroom Resources entitled "Comparing Boxplots." Do page 2.

Enjoy your weekend! Monday we'll finish/start some multiple choice (for another grade) and then talk about standard deviation as we begin to move into chapter 6!

Thursday HW:

Hopefully you all did well on today's test! I'll try to get them all graded tonight!

Tonight, please create two boxplots--parallel boxplots are just two boxplots on the same axis, one above the other.

Given are 4th grade boys and girls performances on an agility test; the test asks them to jump from side to side across a set of parallel lines, counting the number of lines they can clear in 60 seconds.

Create parallel boxplots (one above the other) to compare the distributions of performances (number of lines cleared) for boys and girls.


Boys: 22,17,18,29,22,22,23,24,23,17,21


Girls: 25,20,12,19,28,24,22,21,25,26,25,16,27,22


**I would recommend you put the "boys" in L1, "girls" in L2, and then create parallel boxplots on your calculator--just turn plot 1 on and set it to a boxplot for L1, then turn on plot 2 as well and create a boxplot for L2. Hit ZoomStat, and you'll see the graphs--then transfer them to your paper and show the work for the fences!** (See page 80 for calculator help--it uses this exact same data!)

First Test Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the day of our first test--so study, study, study!

Remember, you won't be doing any math or creating any graphs for the test--it's all about knowing vocabulary and concepts. There are 14 vocab words to match to 18 definitions (4 words have 2 definitions), worth 18 points. Then, there are 13 points worth of additional questions asking about different concepts (How does mean relate to median based on shape? What graphs are used for categorical/quantitative data? What are measures of center/spread? And how can we define shapes?)

It's the Weekend!

Enjoy the weather today and tomorrow, and do your homework Sunday while you're watching the Giants and it's raining...

Here's your weekend homework (you too period F!):

page. 91: 3 (do it all on your calculator), 5 (skip commenting on Sx and IQR), 7a-c, and 9 (for this question, to think about which has a larger standard deviation, just choose which data set has "more spread").

And....page 131 6ab.

So that's 5 problems for this weekend! Not too bad!

Period F--don't forget about your AP problem also (see the post below for some more info).

Also, if those of you in period F want a stamp, you can write down 5 EHHS-related goals you have for this year. They might include academics, extracurricular, or social activities, but must be school related. AND, they have to be in COMPLETE SENTENCES.

Back to School Night!

Remember, for part B you have to describe SOCS (just turn the stemplot to its side to see the shape). And, when you describe center and spread, you should calculate the mean, median, and find the range using the data and your graphing calculator--we don't need to "eyeball" the median, we can actually calculate it!

For part c, consider the mean and median you calculated. Consider why these numbers would be misleading as reports of center, given the distribution of the data.

Tonight, please describe the distributions for the four histograms provided in class. All answers should be written in complete sentences and should be thorough. Remember--you need to describe SOCS, and keep everything in context!

Here's a sample answer we drafted in period E for number 1. You can use this as a guide:

The distribution of the duration of Old Faithful eruptions is bimodal and roughly symmetric, with no apparent outliers. The median duration was approximately/about 3.5 to 4 minutes; the range of durations was about 4 minutes. Most eruptions either lasted under 2.5 minutes or over 4 minutes.

Histogram quiz tomorrow! Make sure you can create a histogram (with the aid of your calculator) and answer questions based on reading the histogram (as discussed today in class)! If you were absent, talk to someone who was in class today--because you're still taking the quiz tomorrow!

For those of you who are at the Big E--have a blast! You'll have to make up the quiz when we return.

Tonight, please complete the AP Free Response question provided in class (year 2000, #3).

Remember, this is different than any histogram we've created thus far--you are given the frequencies to create 2 histograms (one for middle-aged, one for young men). Then, compare!

Weekend HW

It's supposed to be a beautiful, cool, fall weather weekend--get outside and enjoy it! Go to the game tonight and support your classmates as well! I'll have to wait until the next home game (tonight is a friend's birthday).

This weekend, please complete the following:

For each of the following four problems, please create a histogram. Then, in 2 complete sentences, describe what you see in the graph (the distribution). Try to provide one sentence that gives a general statement about what the graph tells us about the given context; then, add a second sentence providing some specific support/data that you can read from the histogram.

Two's Day Homework...

Great work today on independence! We have lots of great posters hanging around the classroom with a variety of graphs and two main approaches to the problem--let me know if you want to take a poster home to hang on your bedroom wall.

Tonight, please complete the following:

Page 65: 11a, 14a, 19a, 21a

For three of these you need to make a stemplot, and for one a dotplot--we haven't discussed this in class yet. I expect you to use your resources (textbook, the blog, the internet...) to help if you're stuck! Do your best!

Tomorrow we'll get into quantitative displays and summaries--lots of numbers!

Finally, don't forget we have a quiz on categorical displays and independence on Wednesday! Study! (it shouldn't take the entire period...)

I really hope you read this...

Sorry for the little-bit-late revision to this blog post--for some reason my computer at school has been temperamental with the blogspot site. Let me try all this again...

So I'm adding two problems to those assigned tonight; this complete assignment will be check in class on Thursday. But don't forget--your syllabus needs to be signed/returned by tomorrow!

Homework Problems Due Thursday:

Tomorrow, we'll start class with a short, 10-point quiz on context. Then, you'll get the first AP Statistics pre-test (so we can generate some data and see how much we've learned)!

On Thursday/Friday we'll quickly move through some chapter 3 notes...be ready to learn! Our goal is to be starting chapter 4 next Monday!
