Enjoy Your Weekend and Study!

(This is an early post for Thursday....check the previous post if you're looking for stuff about today's test...)

This weekend--STUDY! Whether you're prepping for the start of AP Exams with Chem/Environmental/Psych on Monday, or you're getting started on your prep for AP Stats or other exams, HAVE A PRODUCTIVE 3 DAY WEEKEND!

We have all learned the same stuff throughout the course of the year--the "stuff" that we need to know for the AP exam. Your AP score will primarily be determined by how well you prepare yourself! We've all sat through the same lessons all year, so the difference between a 3, 4, or 5 is your level of preparation!

The BEST way you can STUDY is to do a PRACTICE EXAM! Here are some other ideas...

  • Do one of the practice exams in you Barron's book! (Then, do another one...)
    • Look at specific topic sections in the Barron's book to review content and do practice problems that target certain areas!
  • Read through your notes! (and outline them!)
    • Many students have made outlines of their notes and typed them up (that's actually what I used to do to study)
      • By doing this, you're reviewing when you type everything up!
      • Then, you can read through your outline any time you have a few free minutes to continually brush up on your content!
  • Use online practice exams and other review sites--USE THE LINKS ON THE RIGHT!
  • Look over old tests and quizzes to refresh your memory on the "main ideas"
If you have other ideas for studying, let me know! I'll share them with the group!

Otherwise, enjoy your 3-day weekend! Oh yeah...and STUDY STUDY STUDY! :)

In case you're curious, here's my tentative plan for the remaining days until May 13th (and right after)....PS...any plan I ever make is always subject to change, I change my mind about 2354123423423 times per day. :)

Test Tomorrow, Multiple Choice Tonight!

Tonight, please complete the multiple choice questions that we started in class (both papers)! These will be collected and graded as a take home quiz--get an A!

Tonight's multiple choice is all related to various t-tests, so it's a little bit of "forced studying" for tomorrow's exam!

If you're looking for some (free response) practice problems, check out these examples in the Part VI Review of your textbook (the answers are in the back of the book):

Page 597-602 : 1, 9, 13, 23, 27bc, 29, 33

Be ready for the test! Here's a breakdown of what's on it...all t-stuff!
  • Make sure you know how to do (the entire process) each of the types of t-test and t-interval!
    • One Sample T-Tests and Intervals (conditions, math, conclusion, hypotheses (for tests))
    • 2 Sample T-Tests and Intervals (conditions, math, conclusion, hypotheses)
    • Paired T-Tests and Intervals (conditions, math, conclusion, hypotheses)
  • In addition, don't forget the "details"--some of the additional stuff we need to know about tests and intervals...
    • Define Type I and Type II error and a consequence of each
    • Find sample size given margin of error
    • What is the meaning of ___% confidence?
      • "If we take repeated samples of n things (context), ___% of the resulting intervals will contain the true mean (context) / difference in mean (context).
    • Interpret p-value
      • Remember, p-value is the probability we see our observed statistic/difference (or a more extreme one) given the null is true
      • For (1 Sample) T-Tests
        • "There is a p-value chance we would see a sample mean of ____ or higher/lower if the population mean (mu) is ____."
        • "There is a p-value chance we would see a sample mean of _____ or higher/lower due to (natural) sampling variability."
      • For 2 Samples T-Tests/Paired T-Tests
        • "There is a p-value chance we would see an observed difference of ___ or larger if there is really no difference in means (null is true)."
        • OR "There is a p-value chance that we would see this observed difference due to (natural) sampling variability."

2's Day HW

Tonight, please complete the worksheet provided in class--this will give us valuable practice in reading through scenarios and identifying which test/interval should be used. Choosing the correct test/interval will be one of the many challenges for our upcoming exam!

Tomorrow in class we'll continue to work with chi-squared; then, on Thursday...test time! Be ready!

If you haven't done so already, check out some of the links on the right! There are a variety of resources you can use to prepare for our AP exam! Next week we may spend some time in the computer lab using some of these resources!

Test Thursday!

No official homework tonight--but get studying!

If you did not have the 2 paired t-tests completed today, please make sure you have them done (for credit) tomorrow! (check the blog post below for the answer keys).

If you were absent on Friday, look at the examples on:

  • Page 577-78: Paired T-Test
  • Page 579 (yellow box): Paired T-Test in the calculator
  • Page 581-82: Paired T Interval
  • Page 582 (yellow box): Paired T-Interval in the calculator
Also, the images below are from our notes on Friday (but the book will likely be more helpful).

Tomorrow in class we'll answer any paired t questions, and then we'll continue learning about chi-squared (tomorrow and Weds.).

Then, on Thursday, it's test time:
  • T-Tests and Intervals
  • 2 Sample T-Tests and Intervals
  • Paired T-Tests and Intervals
  • Chi-Squared Tests (for Independence)
Enjoy your Monday! See you all tomorrow!

Weekend HW: Paired T-Tests

This weekend, please complete the 2 AP problems provided in class (or below) to practice our paired t-tests!

On Monday we'll continue to practice and get ready for our test (on all types of t-tests/intervals) on Tuesday.

I will be after school on Monday to study! Or, if you were out today, you can stay after on Monday to get help with the paired t stuff (b/c it's on the test!)

After you finish your 2 AP problems....enjoy your weekend!

Here are links to the answer keys/scoring rubrics for your homework:

Thursday: NO HW!

Another night off?

Hopefully you're using some of these night's with less (or no) homework to prepare for your AP Exams! (That's really why I sometimes don't give hw theses days!)

Tomorrow in class we'll look at the process for a paired t-test/interval.

Then, over the weekend, we'll have 2 AP problems (paired t-tests) for homework/practice.

On Monday we'll come back and review, and then on Tuesday we'll take a Test.

Weds/Thurs we'll learn chi-square tests.

Friday (5/1) you don't have school, and then it's AP exam time!

Enjoy your Thursday! See you all tomorrow!

Hump Day Homework and Extra Credit?

Tonight, please complete the "Ladies First?" problem, found on the back of the "voles" example we did in class on Monday (with the 2 histograms on it). Or, you can find the questions below.

Here's an opportunity for a couple extra stamps: the answer key I gave you today has an error (in the handwritten question part)...can you find it? If so, fix it and tell me my error before or after class for a few stamps!

Here's an outline of the next 2 weeks, in case you're curious:

Thursday/Friday: "New stuff." (Paired t-tests and intervals)
Monday: Practice (all t-tests/intervals)
Tuesday: TEST on t-tests and intervals (all of them)
Weds-Friday: "New stuff." (Chi-square tests)

And lastly, here's tonight's homework questions (if you can't find yours):

The paper “Ladies First?” A Field Study of Discrimination in Coffee Shops (Applied Economics [2008]) describes a study in which researchers observed wait times in coffee shops in Boston. Both wait time and gender of the customer were observed. The mean wait time for a sample of 145 male customers was 85.2 seconds; the mean wait time for a sample of 141 female customers was 113.7 seconds. The sample standard deviations (estimated from graphs in the paper) were 50 seconds (for males) and 75 seconds (for females). Suppose that these two samples are representative of the populations of both female and male coffee shop customers.
1. Verify that the conditions for a 2-sample t-test/interval are satisfied.
2. Estimate the difference in mean wait times for males and females using 98% confidence.
3. Interpret this interval.
4. Is there convincing evidence that the mean wait time differs for males and females? Test the relevant hypotheses using a significance level of 0.05.

2'sDay HW

Tonight, please complete the 2 AP problems that we worked on today in class! (Both were about treatments for heart attack victims).

  • YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL PARTS, INCLUDING THE HANDWRITTEN QUESTION!

If you'd like to get a head start, tomorrow's homework will be the "Ladies First?" problem, on the back of the voles example we did today in class.

Tomorrow in class we'll continue to work on some t-stuff; then, on Thursday/Friday, we'll move on to our next chapter, paired t-tests. Monday we'll review a little, and then it's test time on Tuesday.

No homework tonight?!

No homework tonight! However, it is going to be a rainy day...the perfect type of day to get some sweatpants on, relax on the couch, and do some studying for AP exams!

Your AP Exam success will be determined by how you prepare for the exam. Study, now. Start early, and study a little by little. You cannot cram for an exam (the night before) that tests you on EVERYTHING you have learned all year!

If you'd like to get a head start, tomorrow's homework will be the "Ladies First?" problem, on the back of the voles example we did today in class.

Tomorrow we'll work in class on some 2 sample t-tests/intervals! Then, on Wednesday, it's on to paired-tests and intervals. On Monday of next week we'll aim to have a test on all of this t-stuff!

Weekend HW: Getting Ready for the AP Exam!

This weekend, please complete the 2 (review) AP problems from last year's exam!

  • This is just a small step in getting ready for this big test so we can earn college credit!
  • Now's the time to start preparing for your AP exams...do a mock exam (outside in the sun), review some notes, look over released AP questions...or use some of the links on the blog or our school web page!
Here are the links to the homework answers:

And here's a link to AP Central...click on any AP course to find all of the released free response questions and answers (for any course)!

Do your homework! And start studying for your exams! But also, ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND! Go outside and play! :)

See you all on Monday for some more 2 sample t-tests and intervals!

Thursday, April 16, 2015

Thursday HW...

Tonight, please complete the 2 AP problems provided in class (or below): 2013 #1 and 2008B #3.
  • These are the type of questions you'll see on our unit test--so make sure you put in a solid effort on this homework! Clearly, it's great practice for our exam (as these are exam questions!)
  • For 2008B part A, you need to find sample size (n), given the margin of error ("within 2 feet")
    •  What part of the interval formula represents the margin of error? Set this part of the formula  = 2 (just like we did to find sample size given ME in the past!)
    • It is impossible to look up t* without knowing n; so, when we find sample size, we must use z* (1.96 for this problem)
    • Substitute 12 for sigma and 1.96 for t*, then do some algebra to solve the equation for n!
    • Then, based on your answer, determine if you have enough $ in the budget for the required sample size (and write this down)!
  •  For 2008B part B, consider your answer above....what problems arise due to our budget constraints?

Good luck! And here are the answers so you can check your work...

2013 Scoring Guidelines (look for #1)

2008 Form B Scoring Guidelines (look for #3)

  • Part C is not in the answer key....I added that part to the original question.

Hump Dayyyyyy

Tonight, please complete the problem on the back of today's notes/example (about credit cards).

  • Show the hypotheses, conditions, math and conclusion for a T-Test
  • Show the math and interpret a 90% confidence interval (T-interval) for the mean number of credit cards for undergraduates.
Here is the context in case you lost yours...

A credit bureau analysis of undergraduate students’ credit records found that the average number of credit cards in an undergraduate’s wallet was 4.09. (“Undergraduate Students and Credit Cards in 2004,” Nellie Mae, May 2005). It was also reported that in a random sample of 132 undergraduates, the sample mean number of credit cards that the students said they carried was 2.6, with a sample standard deviation of 1.2.
Is there convincing evidence that the mean number of credit cards that undergraduates report carrying is less than the credit bureau’s figure of 4.09?

Tomorrow in class we'll do some AP problems to wrap up chapter 23...then, on Friday, it's on to chapter 24--2 sample t-tests and intervals! Woooo!

2'sDay HW

We now have less than 20 classes until our exam...oh em gee.

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 541: 1ac, 2ac, 3, 7, 9 (Note: there is a t-table in the back of your book: Appendix G, page A-80)

Enjoy!

Tomorrow we'll do an entire interval and/or test...then, Thursday we'll do some practice, and Friday we'll move onto chapter 24 (hopefully).

Monday, April 13, 2015

Back to Work!

Here we go...the home stretch! One month (and 20 more classes) until our AP Exam!

Of course I'll be checking EVERY homework assignment until then.

Tonight, please complete the 6 multiple choice questions provided in class (or below). Enjoy! Tomorrow we'll continue to work on some t-tests and intervals in class!

We're On! Review Session Tomorrow 11 - 1!

I hope you are all having a fun, relaxing, and also productive break! It's been nice to sleep in, enjoy some fun time with friends and family, and even do a little school work (so I don't have to do it all Sunday night :) )

Tomorrow we have our review session from 11:00 - 1:00.
  • BRING YOUR NOTES and CALCULATOR! I will not directly tell you how to do the problems on our take home test, but I can direct you to the correct notes or examples to use to help!
  • BRING YOUR TAKE HOME TEST! You can use this time however you like; I can answer any "random" questions, you can work in your Barron's book, or you can work on this week's take home test with your classmates. Maybe you can even finish and turn it in tomorrow
  • MEET IN OUR ROOM (101)! Please meet tomorrow at 11:00 in our classroom. We'll figure out more space if we need it (if more than 30 people show up).
  • I'LL BRING SOME SNACKS! I'll have some generic snacks...granola bars, fruit snacks, chips, waters (that kind of stuff). Feel free to bring an additional snack for yourself if you like.
  • BE FOCUSED! Come prepared to work hard and be productive! You are expected to be focused/working/on task the entire time you're here!
Hopefully I see many of you tomorrow! If not, enjoy the rest of break, and be ready for some "new stuff" on Monday! Feel free to read a little of chapter 23 if you'd like to get ahead!

Check the blog post below if you're looking for info about our take home test (DUE MONDAY)!

Homework and Stamps!

  1. Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook: page 509: 7, 17, 19
    • This will COUNT AS 3 HOMEWORK assignments
    • It's super important you do this homework, as it's our last time to practice the "2 proportion stuff" other than our classwork tomorrow! That's why it's worth so much.
    • This will be your first homework grade of the 4th quarter! Counts triple! Do it!
  1. Stamps are due tomorrow!

  • Count up your stamps and record the total on the front
  •  Double check your counting!
  •  Only papers with actual stamps on them count! This time I'll be paying extra attention for people who sneak papers without stamps in.
Tomorrow in class you will work together on some AP problems with 2 proportion z-intervals and 2 proportion z tests--this will count as our first quiz grade for the 4th quarter!

Lastly, remember that you have a take home test due Monday, April 13th (the Monday we come back)! You can find this under our classroom resources!

Keep checking the blog for updates on a time/date/place for a potential review session over April break.

One more class until break! See you there!
