Last Week of Classes

Here are the things you need to keep in mind:
  • Get your textbooks (and graphing calculators) in! I'm going to start writing accountabilities Thursday/Friday!
  • The crossword puzzles (extra credit homework) are due by Thurdsay! No later!
  • STAMPS ARE DUE THURSDAY! Start counting them up now so you're ready to turn them in!
    • Write your name and the total on the front!
    • Double check!
    • You are literally counting the number of stamps!

And lastly, math people, check out this interesting article about the Fourier Transform!

Happy Memorial Day!

This weekend, no homework of course--unless you want to do some extra credit!

Here are the things you need to keep in mind:

  • Get your textbooks (and graphing calculators) in! I'm going to start writing accountabilities next week!
  • If you would like to get some homework extra credit (fill in 2 past homework zeros) then you must turn in the crossword puzzles (one or both) by Thursday!
  • Stamps are due next week (Thursday/Friday)! Start counting them up now so you're ready to turn them in!

And here's the plan for next week:
  • Tuesday: more ancient number systems!
  • Wednesday: final exam review packet: groupwork
  • Thursday: final exam review game!
    • After working on the review packet on Tuesday I will put you into random groups on Wednesday...
    • I will then generate random names; if the person whose name comes up can tell me the answer to the review question and/or how to do it, then that person's group gets a point!
      • If someone copies an answer from a neighbor, that group will lose points! Multiple instances of cheating = disqualification!
    • The group with the most points wins! (candy!)
  • Friday: do some brainteasers for a couple last minute stamps, answer any last final exam questions, reflect on our year of hard work!.
Enjoy the weekend! For many of you, this is your last long weekend of your high school career! Whaaaatttttt!!!????

Happy Thursday!

Tomorrow in class we'll wrap up our Blackjack/Counting Cards "mini unit" with one last Numb3rs episode regarding the topic.

Then, on Tuesday/Wednesday we'll do some final exam review (and talk about the exam). We'll finish up with one last assignment on Thursday/Friday--see you there!

Two things to remember:

  • Stamps are due next week! Start counting them up!
  • Get your textbooks/calculators in! I'm starting to write accountabilities next week!
We're almost there! Stay focused and finish strong!

Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday....

Happy Monday! For the seniors, this is your last Monday of high school classes! (We have one more Monday, exam day)

Today in class we finished 21 and took our quiz! If you were out today you will have to make up this quiz on Thursday or Friday in class! Be responsible and finish your notes!

Here's an outline of the week's plan....

  • Monday: finished 21, took 21/blackjack quiz (must be made up by the end of the week if you were out)
  • Tuesday: sub work! Read the provided article and turn in the questions. This MUST be completed in class and turned in to the sub for credit!
  • Wednesday: Senior picnic! Our classes will be pretty small, so we'll watch an awesome Numb3rs episode on this day!
  • Thursday/Friday: Last classwork grade (other than stamps)! We will have another article ("Fighting Crime with Statistics 101) to read, followed by some more questions! We will work on this in class on Thursday and Friday!
Enjoy your Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday if I don't see you! Have a blast at the senior picnic if you're there!

21: The movie, the game, and card counting...

Please return your textbooks and graphing calculators ASAP!

Everyone will be taking the quiz on 21, blackjack, and card counting on Monday--so if you were out, it is your responsibility to find/watch this movie (this weekend), and/or to watch the youtube videos linked below to learn about card counting and blackjack! Do some Googling and you should be able to find a site where you can stream the movie for free! If you do find a link to stream the movie, please email it to me so I can post it on the blog! (carofano.fm@easthartford.org).

Remember, you can use any notes you take on your quiz! (But only YOUR notes!)

And lastly, if you took either/both of the makeup homework assignments today, you MUST turn these in by MONDAY! No late papers will be accepted! Yes, these are actually difficult AP Stat problems--but you're trying to make up missing AP Stat homework, so it's only fair! You must provide quality, correct work to earn the homework credit! Lazy responses will simply be discarded!

Here are some links to videos explaining the basics of Blackjack (21) and Card Counting!
And here are some more links...a video explaining the "Monty Hall Problem" (the one with the cars and goats that appears in class):

Otherwise...check this out! Here's a short article about being an Environmental Statistician for those of you who love science and love Statistics!

Happy Weekend!

This weekend--enjoy it! Spend some time with friends and family, relax, have fun, and go outside! Of course also make sure you get your homework done for all of your other classes--just because our class had an AP exam yesterday doesn't mean you can get lazy across the board!

And remember, if you did not complete your Stat Rap assignment, you will have to do so on your own (homework :( ). Get it done! You must turn it in by TUESDAY.

See you all next week!

AP EXAM DAY!

Can you believe it? We started a looooonnggg hard journey back in late August, and we finally made it--our hard work culminated today with our exam! I'm so excited to see all of you tomorrow and talk about your experience!

I meant every word I said to you all today about how proud I am of all of you as individuals, as classes, and as the 2015-16 AP Stat cohort--and you should be equally proud of yourselves! I also will forever appreciate all of you and all of your hard work--I was able to come to work excited and eager to do some Stats every day, through good times and bad--and you were here for a pretty big life event--that wedding! I hope that our class, at some points, was equally helpful in keeping your mind off things in tough times! I'm looking forward to continuing our Stat work over the next few weeks, but without homework, and with some fun/interesting topics!

See you all tomorrow in class! Here's the plan:
  1. Complete our post-exam reflection/survey
  2. Finish our Stat Rap assignment (classwork grade!)

Oh, and did I mention...

You do not have to turn in the Stat Rap Assignment--if you prefer, you can complete this assignment in class on Friday!

Here are alllllll of the answer keys you need from the many resources you can you to study!

Thursday = Exam Day!

We are sooooo close....a few more days of the hardest work and most effort you've put in this year....you got this.....stay strong....persevere.....and of course, STUDY! PREPARE YOURSELF TO SUCCEED!

There is formal homework for tonight....but you have a few things to consider...
  • The Stat Rap Assignment will be collected and graded--this is due by Thursday, 5/12 (AP Exam Day) or any time before! If you were out Friday you still need to complete this to turn in Thursday! Get it done!
  • If you have not done so yet, please be sure to SIGN UP FOR KHAN ACADEMY! If you already have Khan, add me as a coach! Use the instructions provided in class, or below.
  • Finally, please CHECK YOUR HOMEWORK GRADES IN ESCHOOL. Many of us have been out due to exams/field trips/etc., so check your homework grades--if you have a zero for something that you did, show me!
Here are some suggestions for studying leading up to your exam:
  • Come to our after school reviews! We will have after school reviews Wednesday, and Thursday this week, and Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday next week.
  • Look over any old work you got passed back, including the multiple choice you got back today, your April break take home test, and any other old quizzes and tests...
    • Review the test as a whole to see examples of correct solutions
    • Investigate the problems you got wrong--find out how to do them correctly using your notes and other resources!
  • Watch some AP Stat Guy videos to review various topics!
  • Use sites like Learnerator and online practice exams--check the links on the right!
  • Look at released free response questions at apcentral.collegeboard.com! (Click on exam homepages, then the course, and you can find all released FR and their rubrics!)
  • Try a practice exam in a Barron's book or other review guide!
  • Read through your notes!
    • Some students (in the past) have typed up outlines of their notes to summarize all of the content--personally, that's how I studied for my exams in college! You learn/remember a lot just from typing the outline (yes, it will take time), and then you can print it out and read through the outline when you're on the bus or walking to class etc.!
  • Transfer this table outlining all of the tests/formulas/conditions into your notebook!

And here are the probability bingo answers so you can use that packet for review!

Monday HW....

DUE Tomorrow: Please complete the creating boxplots/histograms and comparing distributions worksheet!
  • If you come to the after school review session Monday, we can go over this as part of our review!
  • Otherwise, I will provide an answer key to everyone on Tuesday to use to study....
  • In the given context, the sample size of "groups of ten" is incorrect! The treatments are randomly assigned, but there are not 10 data values for each group--the "with stimulation" group has a sample size of 15, and the "control" group has a sample size of 13
The Stat Rap Assignment will be collected and graded--this is due by Thursday, 5/12 (AP Exam Day) or any time before!

Remember, we have after school review sessions today, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday!

If you have not done so yet, please be sure to SIGN UP FOR KHAN ACADEMY! If you already have Khan, add me as a coach! Use the instructions provided in class, or below.

Hump Day!

Wednesday HW: Tonight, please complete the four (chi-squared) multiple choice provided in class! READ BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS A/B THE LAST MC!
  • The last question does not provide a "two way/contingency table," so this is NOT a chi-squared test for independence! In other words, this is only one categorical variable, so this would be a chi-squared goodness of fit test.....
  • First, determine the expected counts for each eye color, based on the first two sentences...
  • Then, use the chi-squared formula to find the chi-squared component for each eye color (there are 3 components)
  • Then, use your calculator to add these 3 components and find the chi-squared score!
  • OR, if you have a the "chi-squared goodness of fit test" under STAT --> TESTS (newer calcs), you can enter the data values in L1 and your expected values in L2, then use the chi-squared GOF test on  your calc!
  • SHOW SOME WORK FOR EACH QUESTION--RECORD THE P-VALUE/CHI-SQUARED SCORE FROM YOUR CALC! IF IT LOOKS LIKE YOU JUST CIRCLED LETTERS (WITH NO WORK) YOU WILL NOT EARN HOMEWORK CREDIT!
Here are the answers/steps for the full chi-squared test for independence from the weekend/Monday homework:

This last week(ish) before our exam is all about studying! If you want to succeed with a qualifying score (3,4,5), then you have to PREPARE YOURSELF to do so!
