Monday!

Hey everyone! I'm sorry I couldn't be there today--but I am confident that you'll use this opportunity to work together and review to continue to prepare for our AP exam!

Here is some important info for you....

1.) Monday HW:

  • Tonight please SCORE (and take notes) the two free response you completed today in class. This will be checked as homework tomorrow.
  • You will not earn full (hw) credit if you scoring only includes, "E's, P's, and I's." You must show some notes about your scores or correct your responses--take some time to seriously read these rubrics and use this as an opportunity to study!
    • We have seen parts of these questions before, but I wanted to revisit these now that we're closer to the exam and more comfortable with Stats--these are great examples of the types of comparing boxplots questions that have been on the most recent free response
  • Here are the links to the scoring rubrics:

2.) Optional Take Home Test Due Tomorrow!
  • You have one more day to get that (optional) take home test done!
  • The "Inferences for Means" test grades are in--and they absolutely SHOULD have been better. The majority of the content on the test was in our "All Things T" review packet, which had the answers posted--there were too many scores that suggest to me that students did not study. Use this as a learning experience, and be aware that if you do not prepare for the AP exam more than you did for this test your AP exam score will be lower than you saw on this test.
  • For now, put in the work to ace the optional test.
  • Tomorrow is the last day any of these (optional) take home tests will be accepted.
3.) Chi Squared Quiz Moved to Weds.
  • Tomorrow we will have a stamp problem that pushes us to think about the expected counts for chi squared (unless it was accidentally given to you today)--we'll discuss these, then move on to chapter 27.
  • Here are the multiple choice (weekend homework) answers so you can check and use these to study...
    • 30.) In order to plan.... E
    • 11.) The following two-way table....B
    • 14.) A survey of 57 students....D
    • 4.) At a certain high school....B
    • 5.) Which of the following is not true...E
    • 13.) An investigator was studying...E
    • 19.) A geneticist hypothesizes that half...B
    • The spinner in a board game...B
    • A pet food manufacturer...B
    • Statisticians wanted to investigate...E
And here's the plan for the rest of the week:
  • Monday: Practice AP Free Response--Comparing Distributions
  • Tuesday: Expected Counts stamp, start chapter 27 notes
  • Wednesday: Chi-Squared Quiz, continue chapter 27 notes
  • Thursday: Review stamp, finish chapter 27 notes
  • *Friday: Multiple Choice Practice Test (*I will be absent :( )
  • *Monday: More AP Free Response (*I will be absent.)
    • I will assign free response related to experiments, data collection, and bias, as these topics overlap with some of the concepts in AP Psych, and many students will be taking that exam on this day
  • Tuesday - AP Exam: Each day we will review a different topic in class to get ready for our exam!

Weekend HW (4 homeworks left...)

Juniors--I hope you have (or had) an amazing time at prom this weekend! Enjoy the moment, take lots of pictures, and have fun with your friends (and family). And most importantly--be safe!

If you were out today see below for info about today's class.

HW #1: Chi Squared Multiple Choice!
  • This weekend please complete the (12) chi squared multiple choice provided in class.
    • The file is too big for images on the blog, so email me if you were out and need copy, or you can get it done Monday night
  • This is practice for our Chi-Squared quiz (on Tuesday)!
  • On Monday we'll start class with a last little bit of chi-squared stuff--we'll go back to the Titanic and explore how we find the expected counts for a chi-squared test for independence
    • You will need to know how to do this for the second multiple choice question: use the formula below
    • Expected (Cell) Count = (row total)(column total)/(total sample size)
  • I'll also provide the answers on Monday and we'll go over any questions--then it's on to chapter 27, t-tests and t-intervals for slope!

HW #2: Take Home Test = Optional Test Grade!

  • Tuesday in class you received (took) a second portion of today's test, labeled as a take home portion.
  • This is an optional assignment, due Monday.
    • If you choose to turn this in it will be graded and scored as a test!
    • If you do not you will simply be exempted from the assignment and the score will not count for/against you.
    • Why would I want to turn this in?
      • For this take home portion you will have your notes and other resources available--if you feel like you can earn an A (or even a 100%) on this then it's a good a idea to get this in, as an A on a test will help to boost your average!
      • If you did not do as well as you'd like on the take home test, or feel like you struggled today, then it's a good idea to get this in!
        • (You will not get your in-class test back until next Monday or Tuesday, so you'll have to make this decision based on your level of confidence about today's test)

Here's the plan leading up to the AP exam! We're getting there!
  • Friday: All things t review!
  • Monday: Start chapter 26
  • Tuesday:  "Inferences for Means" unit exam
  • Wednesday 4/25: Ch. 26 Notes: Chi Squared "Math"
  • Thursday 4/26: Chi Squared Practice/Classwork
  • Friday 4/27: Finish chi squared notes--expected counts and goodness of fit
  • Monday 4/30: Finish chi-squared, tart ch. 27 (t-tests and t-intervals for slope)
  • Tuesday 5/1: Chi Squared Quiz Then more ch. 27
  • Wednesday 5/2-Thursday 5/3: Finish ch. 27 and mix in AP exam review
  • Friday 5/4: AP Exam Review = MC Practice Test (I will be out)
  • Monday 5/7: AP Exam Review = Data Collection FR (I will be out)
  • Tuesday 5/8 - Friday 5/11: AP exam review
  • Monday 5/14 to Wednesday 5/16: AP exam review
  • Thursday 5/17: AP STAT EXAM!
  • Friday 5/18: STAR Testing (do not stress about this. don't even think about it. just show up and do your best.)
  • Monday 5/21: Review for our last in-class test
  • Tuesday 5/22: Last AP Stat in-class test! One more chance to boost our averages!

Friday's Class Summary:
  • I did check the hw (2009 Free Response, completed and scored--survival rates for cardiopump v. cpr)
  • Stamp = Probability Review!
  • Complete parts a,b of the context below--this is on the back of the "Zuties" problem we used for our notes this week

  • After the stamp we used part c of this problem to learn about a chi-squared test for goodness of fit--see below for some notes!

    • First, we know we have to use a hypothesis test because the question asks for "appropriate statistical evidence."
    • Any time we have one categorical variable with multiple categories we only have one option--a chi-squared test for goodness of fit!
    • We then worked through the goodness of fit test:

TEST TOMORROW!

There is a small chance I will be out tomorrow (depends what happens at Lincoln's doctor appointment today). If I am absent the plan is the same--test tomorrow. Be responsible. Ask the sub (nicely) to immediately pass out the test and formula sheets so you have the full period. If you are not in attendance in Stat, but are in your other classes, you will be given a 0 on the test.

The test tomorrow is on "all things t!" (chapters 23-25)

  • All types of t tests, t intervals, and any associated content is free game!
  • The best tool you have to review is your packet (from Friday).

Here are the answers to the "All Things T" review packet we started today.
  1. (answer must include a comment on the mean or average caloric intake!)
  2. (as n increases the standard deviation of the distribution decreases; so, as n increases, the distribution is less spread out)
  3. C (we're comparing the number of eggs in the summer/winter for the same duck!)
  4. (in reality (in fact) the null is true, but our test suggests the Ha is true)
  5. (remember to look up t*--don't use z*!)
  6. (vocab: p-value = the probability we see our observed data GIVEN the null is true!)
  7. (look at your ch. 23 notes--you need to know these characteristics of the t-distribution!)
  8. (in reality (in fact) the alternative is true, but our test does not show this)
  9. (remember that we use a confidence interval to draw conclusions about a population parameter (mean or proportion)--this question is an example of interpreting the confidence LEVEL)
  • All open ended answers below:

On Wednesday in class we'll get back to chi-squared--tomorrow I'll post the notes we took today for anyone who was out (tonight just worry about studying).

Hey...I think we're going to start class on Wednesday with a matching vocab quiz

Weekend = Study for Tuesday!

This weekend please (use your notes to) complete the "All Things T!" packet we started in class today.

  • This is essentially a different version of the test you have on Tuesday, so this is a great way to study!
  • The answers will be posted on the blog; if you can answer each of these correctly you should be in pretty good shape to earn an "A" on Tuesday!
  • *Note on question 10 (first free response)
    • This question uses two sets of quantitative data (number of men/women in each field)--so this would be summarized with means
    • This should be conducted as a paired t-test--why? Why should we pair this data?

Hey...I think we're going to start class on Wednesday with a matching vocab quiz
  • 19 words, 20 definitions (one word has two definitions). STUDY! Ace this.
  • Most of this vocab appeared on past quizzes (chapters 19-22), so use those to study!

  • Monday 5/7 to Friday 5/11: AP exam review
  • Monday 5/14 to Wednesday 5/16: AP exam review
  • Thursday 5/17: AP STAT EXAM!

And here are the answers to the "All Things T" review packet we started today.
  1. E (answer must include a comment on the mean or average caloric intake!)

    Thursday HW (More Review!)

The #1 determining factor in earning a "qualifying score" and potentially earning college credit on your AP exams is the level of preparation you put in. If you do not study, you likely will not earn the score you want.

This exam matters. This is what we've been working toward all year, and there are clear incentives for your success--college credit most notably. More importantly, it's an opportunity for us to see how we stack up against students across the nation--welcome that challenge and prepare yourself to do your best! If you earn a 4 or 5 you know that you're one of the top Stat students in the country!

    Thursday HW:

Tonight please COMPLETE AND SCORE the 2016 AP Free Response #4 (this is on the back of Monday night's homework, the 2016 free response with the one proportion z-interval about the economy statement)

    • Yay for probability review! :)
    • Use a different color to score your response!
      • You must do each of the following to score your response:
        • Score each part as E,P, or I
        • For parts a,b if you made any mistakes you should correct any errors or show the correct solution
        • For part C you should record some notes about your score/response even if you earned an "E"
        • Determine your overall score of 1-4
    • Here is the link to the scoring rubric (scroll down to #4):

Here's the plan leading up to the AP exam!
    • Friday: All things t review!
    • Monday: Start chapter 26 (probs gonna start class with a vocab quiz...surprise! list will be posted)
    • Tuesday: Looking like this is our "Inferences for Means" unit exam day
    • Wednesday - Friday: Finish chapter 26 (chi squared)
    • Week of 4/30-5/4: Cover chapter 27 (last one)--t tests and intervals for slope
    • Monday 5/7 to Friday 5/11: AP exam review
    • Monday 5/14 to Wednesday 5/16: AP exam review
    • Thursday 5/17: AP STAT EXAM!

Tomorrow we'll start class with a "pop" quiz--it'll be like last night's homework and today's classwork, but you'll be matching the correct test/interval to each scenario. Shhh....it's a pop quiz. :)

    Wednesday, April 18, 2018

    Wednesday HW!

**Remember: MANDATORY meeting for all AP students @ 2:15 in the cafe tomorrow!**

And vote on the poll (top right) to determine the day of our "Inferences for Means" unit test!

Tonight, please complete the rest of the "stamp problem" we had in class yesterday (or below)--this time you're actually following the instructions. (practice identifying correct test/interval procedures).

    1. List all of the different types of hypothesis tests and confidence intervals that we've learned in the table at the top.
      • I also left space to next to the titles "Hypothesis Tests" and "Confidence Intervals" for you to fill in the key words that tell us when to use each.
    2. Read each context and then determine the type of confidence interval or hypothesis test we would use to answer the question.
      • **For #5 you cannot really decide if you'd use a test or interval (you could use either)

Here's the plan for class tomorrow:
    • AP Free Response Stamp: Comparing Distributions--do it, then discuss (10-15 min)
    • Go over HW (5-10 min)
    • Finish our "paired t-stuff" with some review questions (15 min)
    • If we're ahead of schedule and finish early we'll wrap up with some more "identifying tests/intervals classwork."
    • Guess that only leaves Friday for a pop quiz this week.....
On Friday I guess we'll have to start with a review quiz, and then we'll work in groups on some classwork to get ready for our upcoming test.

    21 more classes!

Great job today! Let's keep up the good work for 22 more days!

Don't forget--mandatory meeting for all AP students is this Thursday!

    Two's Day HW:

Please COMPLETE AND SCORE the 2007 AP Free Response provided in class (or below)--this is all based on today's notes!
  • Score your response using a different color pen/pencil
  • You must provide a score AND record some notes to earn full homework credit...
  • Notes = why you got the score you did OR
  • Use the sample answers to write the correct response or add anything that was missing (that you'd need to earn essentially correct)

    • For some reason the links to the free response and scoring rubrics are working right now, so here is an image with the rubric
      • This rubric is a bit outdated--you DO NOT have to show the "mechanics" (the formula) for your t-score--you just need the correct t-score, p-value, and df, but don't need work for these (copy your calc screen)
      • Additionally, on more recent exams these "parts" are more often scored as E,P, or I (not just E or I) with E = 1 point, P = 0.5 points, and I = 0 points. You would then add up your total number of points to get your overall score of 1-4
        • However, no fractional scores are given--so if your total was 2.5, the scorers would look at your answer holistically (as a whole) and decide if they should round up to 3 or down to 2

      1 Month

Today we started our final push toward the big day (May 17th). Let's all make a conscious effort to give our best, every day, from here on. We got this.

Don't forget--we have a MANDATORY MEETING after school THURSDAY in the CAFE!
Head there right after H period so we can get started (and then finish) as quickly as possible)!

*If you were absent on Friday (before break) you must turn in Friday's classwork TOMORROW or you will receive a 0!*
Monday HW = Studying for the Exam!

      • Please COMPLETE and SCORE the 2016 AP Free Response #5 question provided in class (or below).
        1. Time yourself: give yourself 15 minutes to do the FR question! (Then, if you aren't done, use more time and use your notes to finish it up--that's the studying part!)
        2. Score your response using a different color pen/pencil.
          • You must provide a score AND record some notes to earn full homework credit...
            • Notes = why you got the score you did OR
            • Use the sample answers to write the correct response or add anything that was missing (that you'd need to earn essentially correct)
        3. If you do not complete, score, and provide notes (based on your scoring) you will not earn full credit for your homework.

            • Give yourself a score for each section:
              • Section 1 = "The Math" and Name Interval
                • Score yourself as E,P, or I using the rubric
              • Section 2 = Interpreting the Interval
                • Score yourself as E, P, or I using the rubric
              • Section 3 = parts B and C--the rubric is a little weird here, so read below.
                • Component 1 = Part B
                  • If you stated that "it is necessary to check this condition to make sure our sample is large enough for a one-prop z-test," that's pretty close, but you have not satisfied this component.
                  • If you state, "It is necessary to check this condition to make sure our sample is large enough so that the sampling distribution for proportions is approximately Normal," then that's perfect.
                • Component 2 = Part C
                  • Must state that a 2 prop. z interval would NOT be appropriate because this data was taken from one sample, not two (independent) samples to meet this component
            • Now use the breakdown below to give yourself an overall score of 1-4. Write this at the top of your paper.

      April Break!

First and foremost, I hope you have an amazing week! Enjoy some time with family and friends; rest, relax, and do something fun. Use this opportunity to recharge your batteries so you can come back refreshed and ready to give your best effort of the year as we move through the final stretch toward our AP exam.

Over April break you must complete the review take home test (provided in class)! Ace this thing!

      • Be sure to get this done! This is a major grade; it's essential you put in max effort. Use your notes, use online resources, and use your textbook to figure all this out!
        • The more effort you put into the take home test the more you're preparing for the AP exam!
      • If you were absent Thursday/Friday you must email me for a copy of the take home test. You are expected to be responsible and get this done over break.
      • The take home test is due at the start of class the Monday we return from break.
        • If you do not have it you will lose 15 points for each day it is late.
        • No tests will be accepted after Friday, 4/20.
April Break Review Session: Wednesday (4/11) from 10:00-1:30
      • You must bring your NOTEBOOK and graphing CALCULATOR to the session
        • You are coming to work with your classmates to figure out this test, not to have someone tell you what to do (that won't happen on the exam)! This means you'll need your notes!
        • Be on time, and come ready to work. I know it's break, but this session is about working hard, not BSing with your friends. You can do that the rest of break.

        • We will meet in Mr. Bagley's room (room 208)
          • Be respectful of your surroundings. This isn't my stuff. No messing with any of the science equipment, and no making a mess. The room should look better than it did when we started.
        • We will have lunch (hopefully pizza) in the afternoon.
          • Eat breakfast and feel free to bring a snack. We won't be eating until after noon--first we have to get a bunch of work done.
          • It might also be a good idea to bring a water bottle/beverage of some kind--I'm not sure what the drink situation will be.
        • Keep me updated if anything changes about your availability (Remind or email).
          • I hope to see you there! But if for some reason you can't come, please send me a message in advance.
          • OR, if you didn't think you'd be able to attend but now you can, you're welcome--again, just send me a message as soon as you can.
          • The only thing that is unacceptable is to say you will be here and then not show up. Don't do that.
        • Email/Remind me if you have any questions.

Mandatory Meeting for All AP Students: Thursday, 4/19
        • Don't forget, we have a mandatory meeting the Thursday after break @ 2:15 in the cafe!
        • Late students will not be admitted.
          • Latecomers may not be admitted and will be subject to administrative consequences.
        • What to bring:
          • Your ID
          • #2 pencil
          • Knowledge of your...
            • Address, Phone #, etc.
            • Social Security # is optional
See you Wednesday or after break!
