Few thangs....

Hey guys and gals! First off, I'm still here. I have not entirely abandoned the blog, nor will I ever...just got a lil' help now from my student assistant person....also known as Zaiba.

No homework tonight...just make sure last night's is done! We'll talk about it tomorrow...I'll check it off as a HW assignment, just check to make sure you tried it all.

Also, there is now a sign-up book for extra help on my desk. Many students have complained that I am inaccessible due to the incredibly high number of people in here, always. So now, you sign up for some 1 on 1; of course you can't monopolize a whole week, and some days I'll have meetings and/or work to get done myself, but check it out.

If you want to come to my room during study/lunch to work, you may do just that. If you just want to hang out with friends, you can do that in the cafe. There's no need to be here. Don't take it personally, it's only fair to those kids who do need my help.

• For A, find distribution of Y - X means find the new mean (which is the expected value) and standard deviation.
• For B, use a normal model based on your answer to A

Another Extra Credit Opportunity... take it

Hey guys! It's Zaiba = )

So if you can't do the Bock Interview [Wednesday H period], here's a similar assignment that you can complete for extra credit:
It will be for the school newspaper! Only 1 will be picked but if your's doesn't get picked, that does not mean you will not receive extra credit. The topic is our Stats Saturday Session we just had!!

Basically, discuss what is was, who attended, where & when it took place, and why. Explain it from your point of view, your experience and how/why it was helpful to you as a Stats student.
--> Here are some stats from the session:
School attended: Bloomfield HS, Windsor HS, Windsor Locks HS, Plainville HS, Bulkeley HS (Hartford), New Britain HS and of course, ours truly, East Hartford HS.
Students Attended: 213 out of the 218 that said they would. Nice!
Teachers/Presenters from: Westhill in Stamford, Waterbury, RHAM in Hebron, and even a former student.. Andrew Jackwin's mother (Wendy Jackwin).
^Also included members from The College Board and AP Consultants.

It feels like my brain is melting.

Hey guys...I'm sorry I'm not there today. I'm not a doctor, but I think my eyes are on the verge of explosion. I don't know if you've ever head a literally-blinding migraine (well, I hope you haven't), but it's no fun. No, I am not playing Modern Warfare 2. Every day we have left is absolutely crucial with the AP Exam fast approaching (May 4th!).

In fact, I just saw that we have our first registration meeting during H period on February 10th. After our midterm, it'll be AP time before you know it.

Before we get there though, we have our Saturday session in 2 days! WEAR EHHS GEAR OR SCHOOL COLORS! There will be kids from many other schools, so we need to rep. Not only that, but there will be lots of lost people (potentially), and it would be incredibly helpful if they knew who to ask. It's official--if you show up Saturday in EHHS garb, extra credit.

Please try your best on the assignment. I know it's tough, and honestly it was my only option as anticipated being in school. If you can get this done through your own research, it will not only be an incredibly test for college, but I will truly be impressed. Good luck.

Break's Almost Over!

Hopefully we're all feeling rejuvenated after a week off, some food, some presents, some time with family, and a new year--not just any new year, your year, 2010.

We've got big things on the horizon as we get back...here are some of the highlights for the upcoming weeks...

Thursday, January 7: An after school review session about probability--which will be the heaviest focus on your midterm exam; we'll have more, of course, the following week, but I suggest getting a head start here.

Saturday, January 9: Big day! Our first Student Saturday Session (SSS) of the year! We'll be host to a variety of other schools, and this is a big day for midterm review. I'd also be willing to bet that you'll find it's much more fun than you anticipate a Saturday math session to be.

Thursday/Friday, January 14, 15: Author of our own text, David Bock, will be back at possibly the best time imaginable--the last days before your exam! You'll have the opportunity to review with a master of our course, ask any remaining questions I couldn't answer, and see things from a different (I'll admit, better) perspective.

CHUCK-a-LUCK PAPER DUE MONDAY! TIPS...

• First off, NOTHING LATE! NO EXCUSES! YOU HAD A WEEK!
• When you write your paper, you should always be referencing two probabilities: the probability found using your own simulation, as well as the theoretical probability we find (like when we use "and, or, not, given." These theoretical probabilities are based on "the long term," infinite numbers of trials, and that's why they differ from our results based only on 40 trials. (This difference is where you mention the Law of Large Numbers).
• Your paper should explain whether one should or should not play this game (financially speaking), using the specific mathematics for your support. (Remember--I don't want rambling, theories, ideas, random possibilities--I want statistics as your evidence.
• Remember to use appropriate vocabulary, but make sure you state/imply what these words mean so that a non-statistician could understand. I expect to see each of the words in your paper--disjoint, independent, Law of Large Numbers, probability, simulation, "winning number" (and what it is), expected value.
• Finally, don't forget to make some reference to other social factors--such as the idea that this game is used for charity, in considering if we could "make money."
• An introduction and a conclusion are probably a good idea.

Here's another email response I had to a question about number 4b...

So, you have 3 ways to arrange one winning number (the winning number can be the first, second, ot third die). In other words, it can be the first OR the second OR the third way...what does "or" mean you should do? Add or multiply your 3 answers? And for the record, you'll need to use the same idea for the next question, two winning numbers. If you like, email me your final answer and ill tell you if it's correct.

Here's a response I had to a question about number 4...hopefully it helps with your work!


Although I played more than I should for the first half of the week, I have taken a significant break from the action to get all of your papers graded.

For your work, you can just use your individual numbers for number four. However, on #4 you need not use your mean. On 4a, to find the probability of no winning numbers simply count up how many "0's" you have and divide by the total number of rolls in your simulation (that's where the x/40 is coming from). Similarly, on 4b, count how many "1's" you had in your table and divide this number by 40. Finally, for 4c, count how many "2's" you have and divide by 40. Again, use the same logic for 4d, counting how many "3s," which is like 0 total (maybe 1 or 2).

Now, for 4, it calls for two answers--the theoretical probability and using your data. The process above is the process to find probability for your data. For the theoretical, consider the following:

4a: What is the probability of "no winning numbers?" You rolled 3 dice in this game, so that would mean (NOT WINNING and NOT WINNING and NOT WINNING). What is the probability of "NOT WINNING?" In other words, how many total numbers were NOT the winning number you chose? Out of how many total numbers on a die? And then, think--what does "and" mean in terms of mathematical operations?

4b: Now we have the probability of "1 winning number." This means WINNING and NOT WINNING and NOT WINNING. We have to do a little more though--is this the only way you can have exactly one winning number show up? Does it have to be first? We'll have to multiply this first answer by the number of combinations (the number of ways we can arrange exactly 1 WINNING).

4c: Similar to b. Remember for to account for all the ways to arrange two WINNING now.

4d: You got this.

And that is a crazy answer for 4a. Try again.
