Hey guys, it's Courtney Labossiere and Sarah Ribeiro. In case you haven't heard, we've been entered in a scholarship competition for $20,000. Another good question about writing the paper....
When you guys write the essay, you should really just be summarizing the worksheet we started in class into an essay format. Use appropriate vocab, be conscise/to the point. No babbling! No bs! No fluff!
I'll be collecting that worksheet but mostly just to check out your math. All of the other information I'll find in your essay. I'm thinking somewhere from 1-2 pages typed.
Anyway, here's my answer to an email...
Alright, good questions...
First off, for your conditions...what do you think? If you asked all seniors, did you take a random sample? Since we didn't, we'll say "Although we took a convenience sample we'll proceed with caution." For the success/failure, you have to do (np) and (nq) and both have to be bigger than 10--this should pass for everything except maybe the third question (pursue college); if it's not bigger than 10, same deal--we'll proceed with caution.
As for your paper, the first half should be talking about the sampling process. Really, you're just taking those first 3 questions on your worksheet and summing that up in essay format. Talk about what kind of sample you took, what your sample is as a whole (think about how the rest of your group chose people), and what kinds of bias there are. You probably won't name a specific type of bias, but talk about who's over/underrepresented and just think of different problems that would arise from the questions we have and the way we asked them.
Last, for the math part of your essay, you should write about the conditions--which were met, and which were not. Then, you want to interpret your confidence intervals, in context. Remember, in class we wrote some writing templates..."I am 90% confident that the true population proportion of students who work 16 or more hours per week lies between ____ and ____." You can also look in your textbook in chapter 19 and find the example they walk you through. For this piece, try not to just write the same boring sentence three times in a row. Also talk about if you think your estimates are correct and why/why not, or if the numbers seem logical/make sense.

Here's an email response I had that may help...

So 21/122 = .172, and that's p-hat. So then for the formula, you'll have .172 +/- 1.645(square root((.172)(1-.172)/122).
To actually calculate it, use your calculator--STAT-->TESTS-->ONE PROP Z-INT. When the next screen pops up enter x (the number of successes, or in this case, number of kids who said "yes"), n (sample size), and the confidence level, as a decimal.

No one should be working with a data set of only 30 students...can you think of why?

- Use the correct z* value! Look in the chart! Remember, we're using three different levels of confidence--90% for the first question/interval, 95% for the second, 99% for the third.
- Use the Stat--Tests--One Prop Z-Int function on your calculator to actually find the interval; this is a good way to check your work. (You still need to show the formula written out with the correct numbers substituted (plugged) in.
- Use your book/Baron's review guide! Look for confidence intervals for proportions and you'll find examples with all the math/interpretations.

2.) DON'T FORGET YOUR SATURDAY SESSION RSVP! I need these tomorrow! Homework grade! I need them even if you're not going!

Super Bowl Sunday! (And some homework tips)
Yo yo! I hope everyone's got something exciting going on today for the big game. I just sent an email answering a couple questions about the homework, and thought it might be helpful for everyone, so check it out...
They (the problems) are a bit different, but that's b/c I want you to have some challenge! For the rainfall problem, if you're just talking about one year, you use the standard deviation given. However, once we start talking about 4 years (I think in c,d) you need to then use the new standard deviation formula for teh sampling distribution of means. That's the key to which formula you use--once you start taking more than one sample (year), you have to use the new formula. So 26 is a little bit of everything.
Yes, for both you should check the conditions and show your work written out.
For 36b, it's a flashback to probability. In A you found the probability that a bag is underweight--so for b, think about "ands" and "or's." We have 3 bags--so, "not underweight and...." Think about it.

So since Superbowl 44 IS on Sunday.. .Mr. Carofano decreased the amount of homework to only #'s 26 + 36 on page 430 and the problem we were doing in class (if you didn't already hand it in). Both these assignments will be collected Monday and graded SO remember...
1.) conditions. check 'em
2.) graph it- normal model
3.) show all calculations
4.) answer the question ---> draw a conclusion..
Do it before Sunday!
*Permission slips for the Saturday Session are due WEDNESDAY!! Have it in!!
..Also keep in mind when you're picking your seminars for CAPT Week, the AP Statistics one is on Wednesday March 3rd. Be there...... or else ;)

#31 HW Tip!
31A asks you to find the mean and standard deviation of test scores...how can we do this? If we just add up the scores 1-5 we're not considering how many students got each score. So, think of the score as your "value" and the percents are our "probability." So for mean and standard deviation, enter the score in L1, percent (as a decimal) in L2, and do the 1 Var Stat L1,L2.
