Thursday HW

Judging from this poll question we're a pretty shallow group of individuals...

Onto the last chapter of probability! Yay!

Tonight, please use your textbook to find answers to these chapter 17 reading questions:

1. What are the three qualifications for a situation to be a Bernoulli trial?

2. What is a Geometric probability model used to calculate?
3. What is the 10% condition?
4. A Binomial model is defined by two parameters. What are these?
5. The formula for a binomial probability is highlighted (middle of the page) on page 391. What is this formula?
6. What do each of these variables—n, k, p, and q—represent?
7. Look on page 391, just above the box at the bottom, the (blue) highlighted sentence. Write this sentence. (“A binomial probability model describes…)
8. What are the formulas for mean and standard deviation of a Binomial probability model (look at the box on page 391).
9. What is the success/failure condition? It is used to determine if we can use….(what)?

10. Look at the TI Tips box on page 393. What is the difference between binompdf( and binomcdf( ?

Wednesday HW

First day back! Well, first day of the second semester at least. Home stretch to the AP exam...

We're going to flyyyy through probability; that doesn't mean it'll be easy, quite the opposite. We need some serious hard work and dedication for the third quarter.

Tonight, please complete page 366: 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45 (aka 35 - 45 odd).

Stamps?!

There is an alarming number of people who did not hand in stamps; if you do not turn these in on Tuesday you will have a 0/15 as a classwork grade :(

If you won't be here on Tuesday you can lay out your stamps, take a picture, and email me this shot of the stamps with the total number. I'll enter the grade so you don't have to come in to school, but you MUST physically bring the stamps on Wednesday. I'm trying to do you a favor and not force you to bring them in on make up exam day; if you don't follow through and/or lie, I will have to subtract some stamps next quarter. (But I know none of you will do that, I trust you all.....errr....most of you....)

Otherwise, rest up, rejuvenate, and be ready to work hard when you're back! Our goal is to finish probability before the end of January. It'll be tough, but we've fallen a little too far behind and need to make up some ground.

The third quarter is the most important quarter for us. It's the final fulll quarter before the AP exam, and generally covers topics that dominate the test. So now's the time to step it up and work harder than you have all year.

We can relax after May 10th :)

Can't wait to get back to Stats....have a fun, safe, and relaxing weekend! Go outside!

Practice Tests

For those of you who did get a copy of the practice exam, here's some info you need...

Sorry about the cancellation today :(

Check the picture to the right to see what to skip on these practice tests!

Today's Review CANCELLED

So it turns out that our school will be used as a shelter today for people who have been displaced by the fire in East Hartford this morning.

Unfortunately, NO STUDENTS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE BUILDING AFTER 11:45. Thus, our after school review is cancelled.

I truly apologize for this, especially to those of you (Kayla, Steven) who left and planned to come back to study.

I will update the blog later on with some more detailed information about the test.

Study hard....you're on your own. :(

Saturday Debrief

I love our Saturday review sessions. It's a fantastic opportunity to see how we stack up against students from other schools, to see where we need to improve, and to acknowledge what we're doing well. It's also a great opportunity to learn from a variety of different educators, and thus best prepare ourselves for the AP exam.

More importantly, each time we host a Saturday session it forces me to step back and realize how incredibly proud of all of you (and of our school) I am. I could not be happier with the way you all conducted yourselves, and with the energy and effort you brought to the session. You absolutely represented East Hartford High School well. I know that school on a Saturday doesn't sound particularly thrilling; however, you all make it one of my favorite experiences we have. I couldn't ask for better students, and hope you will all make our remaining two Saturday's equally enjoyable and productive.

Thank you all for everything you've done thus far. I have worked your hard, been a jerk at times, and tried my best to constantly push you to improve. You have all risen to that challenge, and I cannot express my full appreciation in words. Proud as I may be, we do still have our work cut out for us. As hard as we've worked, I'm going to ask that we step it up even more for the next three months. If we can do that I have no doubt you can all succeed on the AP exam. No missing homework, more consistent studying, more time after school--this is crunch time, the home stretch to the AP tests in May.

Thank you again for being the best students in the world. East Hartford's AP kids just continuously impress.

And if you weren't there...come next time!

Thursday HW

Last homework assignment of the quarter (and the semester!)

I kinda rushed this (the tree diagram assignment provided in class)...so if you struggle, it's ok. Just do your best, and answer as many questions as you can. We will definitely be going over this tomorrow in class.

In case you lost it, here are the questions:

A private college report contains these statistics:70% of incoming freshmen attended public schools
75% of public school students who enroll as freshmen eventually graduate
90% of other freshmen eventually graduate
Create a tree diagram…
• What percent of freshmen eventually graduate?
• What is the probability that a student who attended public school graduates?
• What is the probability that a student who attended a non-public school graduates?
• What is the probability that a given graduate attended public school?
• What is the probability that a student who did not graduate attended a non-public school?
• Are graduation and public/other schooling independent? Explain.

Thank you so much to those of you who stayed after today! I truly appreciate all your hard work!
(Micaela, Chavar, Jacob, Tedisha, Abby, Rebecca, Xavier, Jamel, David, James, Kurt, Ashley, Kevin) *If I forgot someone, I'm sorry.*

Hope to see more of you next week!

Wednesday HW

It's almost the halfway point of the year....and we're past halfway to the AP exam....

Time flies!
Tonight, please complete:

page 364: 15, 19, 21, 23, 28

Tuesday!

Tonight, please complete the Venn Diagram practice problems provided in class.

This will be collected and graded as a 16 point AP Problem (techinically classwork) grade! Don't get a 0!
(1 point per answer (a,b, or c) and 1 point per Venn Diagram--you need 4).

Here are the questions in case you lost the paper...

Probability and Venn Diagrams

• Look for an overlap. If categories overlap (which means you’ll see the word “both”), then a Venn Diagram is often the best strategy to use.

1. A survey of college students shows that 56% live on campus, 62% have a campus meal plan, and 42% do both. What is the probability that a randomly selected student…
a. lives on campus or has a meal plan?
b. Lives in a residence hall but doesn’t have a meal plan?
c. Lives off campus and doesn’t have a meal plan?

2. Suppose the probability that a U.S. resident has traveled to Canada is 0.18, to Mexico is 0.09, and to both countries is 0.04. What’s the probability that an American chosen at random has…
a. Traveled to Canada but not Mexico?
b. Traveled to either Canada or Mexico?
c. Not traveled to either country?

3. Employment data at a large company reveal that 72% of the workers are married, 44% are college graduates, and half of the college grades are also married. What’s the probability that a randomly chosen worker…
a. Is neither married nor a college graduate?
b. Is married but not a college graduate?
c. Is married or a college graduate?

4. Real estate ads suggest that 64% of homes for sale have garages, 17% have both a garage and a pool, and 32% have neither a garage nor a pool. What is the probability that a home for sale has…
a. A pool or a garage?
b. A pool but no garage
c. A pool or a garage but not both?

Quiz Tomorrow!

We will have a probability quiz tomorrow! Nothing from your weekend homework or today in class. The quiz will be either version B or C--we did Quiz A in class in groups. I handed out the answers, so just study these and you'll be good to go!

Also, tonight please complete the following:

page 342: 27 (also practice for the quiz)
page 362: 1, 17, 25

I plan to have a review session at noon on either Monday or Tuesday where I'll buy pizzas and we'll all study. Please vote for a day (don't vote if you're not going to come).

And don't forget--Saturday Session is this week! Great time to review for the midterm!

Weekend HW

One more week until exams...

I'll give you a copy of what's on your exam (and the format) on Monday.

This weekend, please complete the following (contingency tables are back!):

page 362: 7 - 11, 27 (*Hint: If events are disjoint, they cannot be independent; and if they are independent, they cannot be disjoint*)

Thursday!

Currently jamming to the new Bruno Mars album. Pretty fantastic if you need some good pop music in your life. I think "Treasure" is my current favorite...

Anyway, onto some homework (for you to enjoy while listening to Bruno Mars).

Tonight, please complete:

p. 340: 18, 19, 29, 31, 33

Gotta love the revival of (actual) mathematics in this class!

Back to real life....

Back to the grind...

Tonight, please complete the following:

Page 339: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17

Over the next 8 days we'll cover probability, hopefully chapters 14 and some of 15. We will not review for our exam in class; instead, I will be available next week after school and we have our Saturday session (1/12)!   I'm glad to be back! Enjoy your first night of homework!
