Wednesday!

Homework! More confidence intervals! I'm pumped!

Tonight, please complete the questions (about cheating on tests) provided in class!

If you lost the paper, the context and questions are provided below:

A Rutgers University study released in 2002 found that many high-school students cheat on tests. The researchers surveyed a random sample of 4500 high school students nationwide; 74% of them said they had cheated at least once.

a.) Create a 90% confidence interval for the level of cheating among high-school students. Assume the conditions for inference have been satisfied. You may use your graphing calculator to create your confidence interval, but still must show the formula with the appropriate values substituted)
b.) In a complete sentence, interpret your confidence interval from part a.
c.) A teacher surveys his students and finds that 68% of students have cheated on a test. Does this value seem reasonable? Surprising? Explain your reasoning.
d.) Suppose we sample 2,000 students and find that 67% have cheated. Calculate the margin of error.
e.) If we want to have a margin of error of only 3% and want 98% confidence, how large of a sample must be used?
f.) If we want to have a margin of error of 5% to create a 95% confidence interval, what is the appropriate sample size?

***Hint****
In some classes we did not (per E) get into the math for questions E and F. Here's what you need to consider--what is the margin of error (check your notes!)? Write down this formula for margin of error. In question e, we set this formula equal to 0.03. Then, we can substitute z*, p-hat = 0.5 and q-hat = 0.5, and do some algebra to solve for n.

Monday!

Tonight, please complete the questions provided in class (and below)...

These will be the foundation for our new learning with chapter 19 tomorrow! I can't wait!

Investigating Confidence Intervals:A recent study (February 14,, 2012)by Reuters (New York) interviewed 21,248 people worldwide in an online survey (conducted by Ipsos).
Of those interviewed, 59% said they were married or living with their partner.
• “South Africa reported the highest levels of domestic bliss, with 82 percent of settled South Africans saying nothing could make them happier than their partner.
• 45% of all singles stated finding a partner would bring them the greatest happiness
• Countries included: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the United States
1. You have been challenged with the task of estimating the population percentage of people married.
a. Identify the sample for this context.
b. Identify the population of interest.
c. Define p-hat, q-hat, n, and x (the number of people married in this study).

2. Check that the necessary conditions to apply a sampling distribution for proportions are met.

3. Sketch a Normal model for the sampling distribution for proportions. Label the 3 standard deviations above/below the mean (in this case, p-hat) with the “68/95/99.7 Rule” shown.

February Break!!!!

Seriously, do we really need more time off? Use this time to rest up and rejuvenate--it's a long stretch until April break when we're back!

Over the next 5 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday...) your job is to complete the take home test provided in class.

Our probability take home test was work 34 points--this one's worth 57! So use your resources, maybe meet up and work in a group this weekend, and feel free to email with questions.

If you lost your copy you can find the test uploaded under our classroom resources, entitled, "February Break Take Home Exam." THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO NOT HAVE THIS TEST ON WEDNESDAY.

*Remember, I expect you to look up the answer for the 2010 free response. I want you to look at the answer and use this to develop an understanding of how to solve this problem.*

(And there are some new polls to humor you...)

Wednesday HW

Back to school--finally!

Your only homework tonight is to complete and return the Saturday Session Permission slip (even if you're not going!).

These are due tomorrow!

Test Postponed

No poll needed....the decision has been made via facebook group feedback and my own executive decision making...

WE WILL NOT HAVE A PROBABILITY TEST TOMORROW.

Instead, we will take this test during our mandatory CAPT seminar (with notes, and in groups that I assign). We will be working in groups that mix classes together.

Tomorrow, we will start chapter 18 and begin our exploration of statistical inference--which will take us through to the AP exam!

PLEASE REMEMBER--I NEED YOUR SATURDAY SESSION FORMS TOMORROW!

TEST IS STILL ON!

Our test will be tomorrow (Tuesday)!

Study, study, study!

See below for details about the test's composition!

It Gon' Snow!

Ok, so it's going to be a blizzard. Allegedly. So here's the plan...

Homework: take home probability test. This is due Monday (regardless of whether we have school tomorrow or not). If you lose this paper or were not in class, the take home test has been uploaded. Go to our classroom resources (powerpoints, assignmenets, etc...); it's the first link under the "Assignments" section. THERE IS NO EXCUSE NOT TO HAVE THIS ON MONDAY! YOU WILL LOSE TEST POINTS IF IT'S LATE!

Test: Our test is scheduled for tomorrow. If we have a snow day, the test will be Monday, no exceptions. In order to save time (and not have tests on 2 days), the in-class test will consist of both multiple choice and vocabulary. I plan to put (approximately) 13 released multiple choice (30 min) questions on the test and 12 matching vocab questions (12 min).

Finally, don't forget that the Saturday Session permission slips are due Tuesday.

Enjoy the snow and your (likely) 3 days weekend! Come prepared for the test; then, we'll be on our grind Tues-Thursday to complete chapter 18 and start 19!

This is one of my favorite rap songs ever. And my favorite rapper. FYI.
