Happy Thanksgiving!

First and foremost, Happy Thanksgiving! You have all worked incredibly hard thus far...enjoy these few days to rest, relax, and enjoy some time with your friends and family! We'll get back to work on some conditional probability on Monday!

Of course your homework is to complete your take home test for Monday. As you know, you must show work for any of the starred multiple choice questions. Use your notes, use the links on the right, watch some AP Stats guy videos, and use your Barron's review guide--come back on Monday ahead of the game, rather than feeling behind!

Your take home test is uploaded under our classroom resources entitled, "Thanksgiving Take Home Test." (In case you were out, lost yours, or need another copy).

If you get bored at any point over the next 5 days check out the Statistics rap songs under "Statistics Music" link.

Weekend HW!

I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving (already)! I guess time flies when you're having fun :). For real though, you all are making this a super fun year for me...I truly appreciate all of your hard work you put in. I expect/demand a lot from you, and I know that sometimes I may even be a jerk (I'm sorry! I just want to keep pushing you!). So anyway, thanks for being awesome! Keep up the great work all year!

This weekend, the homework differs by class. On Monday we'll all be back to the same point...

All of the homework is below (as images) in case you lost any of the handouts or were absent.

Period B: Please complete the AP problem provided in class (dealing with golf balls). If you were absent, we also did the multiple choice questions below (to be collected and graded); do those so you're not behind! You must show work for each question to receive credit! All period B students--if you would like, you can re-do these multiple choice for Monday. You must show work/explain your answer to earn credit though! I will collect your re-do on Monday and give you this grade (instead of what you gave me in class).

Period E: Please complete the AP problem provided in class (dealing with golf balls). In addition, please also complete the 4 AP multiple choice questions provided in class. (These will be collected and graded; you must show work or explain your answer for each problem to earn credit!).

Period F: Please complete the AP problem provided in class (dealing with golf balls). If you were absent, we also did the multiple choice questions below (to be collected and graded), so do those so you're not behind! You must show work for each question to receive credit! All period F students--if you would like, you can re-do these multiple choice for Monday. You must show work/explain your answer to earn credit though! I will collect your re-do on Monday and give you this grade (instead of what you gave me in class).

Lastly, if you were absent, we finished the Venn Diagram problems (also below) as a classwork grade. Get these done for Monday so that you're not behind!

Too'sday Homework

Tonight, please complete the "Powerball and Nickels" worksheet provided in class! This is a short homework...and I'm checking! So do it! The questions are listed below (in case you lost yours or were absent).

Tomorrow in class we'll finally finish our chapter 14 notes...then, we'll do some multiple choice practice. We'll have our chapter 14 vocab quiz on Thursday or Friday (still can't decide), and then we'll be done with chapter 14! Wooo!

See you all tomorrow! Enjoy your Tuesday!

Powerball and Nickels Homework Questions:

  • The diameter of a nickel is .8125 inches
  • The distance from New York to Los Angeles is 2443.79 miles

1.)    Suppose we are going to line up nickels (in a straight line) directly from NY to LA. How many nickels will we need? (There are 5,280 feet in a mile).

  • Let’s assume one of those nickels has a big red X on it, and is randomly placed in the long nickel line from NY to LA.
  • Let’s also assume you are in a plane that flies along the long nickel line, and your goal is to jump out of the plane (with a parachute)and land with your big toe on the nickel that has the big red X.

2.)    What is the probability (assuming you will definitely land on a nickel) that you land on the nickel with the red x?

  • POWERBALL is a lottery where you must match 5 white balls and 1 red “powerball” to win the jackpot
    • The white balls are numbered 1 – 59
    • The “powerball” is numbered 1 – 35

3.)    What is the probability you match one of the white balls in the Powerball lotto?

4.)    What is the probability you match the red ball?

5.)    What is the probability you win the Powerball?

6.)    Compare your answers to (2) and (7). What is more likely—landing on the nickel with the red X or winning the powerball?

Thursday HW

Tonight, please complete the "Chapter 14 Quiz C" worksheet provided in class. (it's not a quiz though). You can find the questions below if you lost yours or were absent.

Our discussion/review of the homework problems today was some of the most important stuff we can talk about--the best way to be good at probability is to practice. So, although it may not have been the most exciting class, these are very important notes/examples for you to reference.

Tomorrow we'll spend class taking more notes--learning all sorts of the vocabulary and concepts behind "the math." On Monday we'll practice, and then hopefully we can have a chapter 14 quiz on Tuesday (and our ch. 14 vocab quiz next Wednesday).

See you all in class! And then it's the weekend....already!

Monday/Tuesday HW!

I have high hopes for the grades on today's test....hopefully we can have a Stats-wide average of at least a B-!

Tonight/tomorrow, please complete the 6 probability slides provided in class. I will check this on Wednesday, along with the textbook problems that were due today (I didn't want to bother you during your test). Here are some hints for the homework...
  • The homework problems are uploaded under our classroom resources, entitled, "Intro Probability HW."
  • If you do not have these on Wednesday you will get a 0. Even if you were absent.
  • For the problems about the M&M's or rolling a die, you want to try to translate the problem using the words "AND" and "OR". "AND" means we multiply, "OR" means we add
    • For example, one question asks for the probability that we roll 3 dice (or one die 3 times, same thing) and they're all sixes...
      • In other words, this means we roll a "6" and a "6" and a "6."
      • The probability of rolling a 6 on a die is (1/6)
      • So "6 AND 6 AND 6" means (1/6) times (1/6) times (1/6).
    • For the last two slides about basketball/soccer or the displays/equations on pages in the textbook, try to draw a Venn diagram
      • Fill in the middle ("both") first, if you can!
I know that I haven't taught you this yet! We're going to go through all of these problems as part of our notes...but to receive homework credit you have to at least try your best! I want to see what we already do/don't know about probability. You have to try all 6 problems to receive  homework credit!

Other than that, enjoy your day off! New stuff on Wednesday...lots of math....I can't wait!

TEST MONDAY!

Study, study, study! And if you didn't do the homework assignment that's do Monday (yet), do that too! It's important you start off with a high test grade...our next unit is one of the toughest in the course, so that means the tests and quizzes will be more difficult! Ace this one on Monday!

    • Use a model to predict (like our UConn SAT scores example)
    • Comment on your confidence in a prediction (extrapolation?)
    • Use a re-expressed equation to predict (like #1 in the homework, or like 12-16 from our multiple choice classwork)
And lastly, I put a general overview of Unit 2--a list of what you should know about this unit--under our classroom resources! Check it out! It even has the writing templates!

Enjoy the weekend! Study! Again!

Quiz Tomorrow!

If you were out today you will have to take both quizzes in class tomorrow! (The one described below and the ch. 9 vocab quiz)

Don't forget...we have another quiz tomorrow! The quiz is based on identifying a potentially influential point, and then explaining why it is or is not influential. A few notes...
  • Study Monday's sub work and today's "half sheet" example!
  • Remember, when you write your explanation of why a point is/is not influential, be sure to include the phrase, "When the point is added/removed, the...."
  • Compare the slope, yint, and r of the original data to the data with/without the potentially influential point
  • Outliers and Influential points are not the same thing!
    • When you talk about an outlier, do not comment on how it affects the regression statistics!
For homework, please complete the following problems in your textbook by Monday:

Page 215: 3, 17   and   Page 238: 1, 3, 7

**I would recommend you do these tonight. If you do, you can ask me any questions tomorrow. If you wait until the weekend, you won't be able to ask any questions before the test! Also, if you do this tonight, your only weekend homework will be to study!**

Tomorrow we'll take our quiz, do some multiple choice, and talk about Monday's test! See you all in class!

  • Extrapolation
  • Interpolation
  • Residual (graphically...the vertical distance from a point to the LSRL)
  • Leverage
  • Outlier
  • Lurking Variable
  • Influential Point
In addition, please complete the following in your textbook. These problems are due no later than Monday:

Monday HW!

Good morning! Sorry that I'm not there with you today...I'll be back on Wednesday for sure.

Today, get an A on your classwork! This investigation of potential outliers/influential points is the same style of questions you'll see on our chapter 9 quiz!

On Wednesday we'll wrap up chapter 9/start chapter 10. We'll have a chapter 9 vocab quiz on Thursday, finish the unit Friday, and have a unit test next Monday!

For homework, please complete the AP problem provided in class (2007 Form B #4). In addition, you should use the scoring rubric to grade yourself. If you do not grade your problem you will only receive half credit!

Enjoy school today and your day off tomorrow! See you all on Wednesday!
