Break's almost here!

So here's the deal for tonight and break.

Tuesday HW: Get me your take home test tomorrow, no excuses!

Over break: You need to complete the chapter 15 quiz A worksheet (graded!) as well as your Chuck-a-Luck summary. Both of these will be collected upon your return.

For your Chuck-a-Luck (Type 3), you'll have to follow the FCA's below (30 points):

Role: With a recent explosion of Chuck-a-Luck in the local community, you are a reporter investigating the game to inform the population about the advantages and disadvantages of this game.

Format: You should write either a short mathematical essay (1 page), a newspaper article, journal article--be creative! The more beautiful and better the format, the more it will help you out!

Audience: general (non-statistically literate) public, anyone interested in playing Chuck-a-Luck

Focus Correction Areas (FCAs)
1. Student comes to a clear conclusion about whether he/she should gamble with Chuck-a-Luck and supports this conclusion in (an organized fashion) with appropriate structure--introduction, supporting paragraph(s), conclusion. (5 points)

2 . Student supports his/her stance using theoretical and simulated probabilities (8 total) CORRECTLY calculated in number 4. (8 points)

3. Student compares/contrasts and/or ranks the probabilities mentioned above. Which was most likely? Least likely? Were there large differences? How likely is it you win at least your money back? (4 points)

4. Student includes comments about the expected value. What is it? What does it suggest about Chuck-a-Luck? Give specific examples. Summarize all of your findings from number 2 and use the expected value table we created on a half sheet of paper. (6 points)

5. Student (at any point in this write-up) includes comments about “mutually exclusive” and/or “independent,” and at least 3 points regarding historical/background info about the game. (5 points)

6. Neatness/creativity/visual appeal (2 points)

Probability tomorrow!

*If you were absent today you will be taking the test tomorrow; if you do not have a study hall or time after school to take it, you will have to do so during class time (which isn't good, since you'll miss notes!)*

You have 2 homework assignments to complete!

1. Bring in your permission slip for Saturday (HW grade).

2. Read chapter 14. (Reading quiz? We'll have to wait and see...)

TEST TOMORROW!

So here's the deal for the end of experimental design/sample surveys (I CAN'T WAIT TO DO PROBABILITY ON WEDNESDAY!)

The problems from the textbook listed on the previous blog post are extra credit, due tomorrow.

Your free response take home test is due Wednesday 12/22.

YOUR HOMEWORK TONIGHT IS THE 8 MC HANDED OUT IN CLASS. THIS IS PART OF YOUR TEST GRADE!

YOUR SATURDAY SESSION PERMISSION SLIPS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY. THIS IS A HOMEWORK GRADE.

Thursday/Friday HW

Period B: Complete the AP problem I handed out in class regarding blocking. You can complete the 10 MC and 2 open ended I handed out for extra credit, due Monday.

Period E,G: Tonight for homework you need to complete the 10 MC and 2 open ended questions on the worksheet I distributed in class.

Also, your experimental design practice worksheet from yesterday is due Friday.

For Tuesday, you need to complete the following as we review for our test both in class and after school (for Tuesday's multiple choice test). However, HALF OF THESE PROBLEMS MUST BE COMPLETED FOR MONDAY.

Page 319: 11, 17, 23, 24, 27, 29, 31, 36, 41

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

Your experimental design paper will be DUE FRIDAY!

The paper I gave out in class will not be due until FRIDAY so that we can cover all the material. You should still work on it as you will still receive other homework.

I want you to be able to have ample time to get help/do a good job since it's worth 28 points!

And PERIOD G: we need to discuss in more detail our experiment, so we'll clarify a bunch of questions and even work on this some in class tomorrow because we're ahead of the other groups.

Wednesday HW

Stats peeps--tonight you need to complete the worksheet regarding experimental design and the contexts we discussed in class. This will be collected and graded. You can find this under the "Powerpoints and Assignments" link entitled, "Experimental Design Practice."

Here's an outline of the days to come--sorry yesterday was so disorganized, I got thrown off by the assembly and then switched up my lesson plan on the spot period G.

Thursday: practice problem with blocking/finish notes
Friday: 8 MC question pop quiz, followed by 2 AP problems you will work on individually
Monday: review for our test (in class and after school)
Tuesday: in class MC exam (you will get the FR as a take home this time).
Wednesday: Probability!

Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Tuesday HW!

Period B--no need to do that worksheet you grabbed from me! Only like 4 kids came to get it so we'll do it in the future!

Your homework tonight is to go online and use the AP rubrics (which I put under the Classroom Powerpoints and Assignments link) to grade your two AP problems.

Page 313, 2006 AP problem answers

So I'm posting a few things...first off, below are the answers to the even problems from your homework.

Second, tomorrow I'll be assigning a worksheet in class to design our experiments discussed in class (I would've given them to you today, but didn't get a chance to pass these out). This will be due Friday, and we can work on it at tomorrow's review. If you want a head start, it's under the Classroom Powerpoints link under "Experimental Design Practice."

Finally, I've posted both the AP rubrics for the 2 problems you did with the sub under the same link entitled. "2006 #5, and 2006B #5."

Enjoy!

Page 313:
24. The "control" in this experiment is not the same for all swimmers. We don't know what "their old swim suit" means. They should compare their new swim suit to the same suit design. The order in which the swims are performed should be randomized. There may be a systematic difference from one swim to the next. For instance, swimmers may be tired after the first swim (or more warmed up). Finally, there is no way to blind this test. The swimmer will know which kind of suit they have on, and this may bias their performance.

26. a. Self-selection could result in groups that are very different at teh start of the experiment, making it impossible to attribute differences in the results to the diet alone.

b. The meals were prepared by dieticians to ensure that the diets were followed and that all subjects received comparable treatments.

c. The researchers can compare the change in blood pressure observed in the DASH group to the control group. They need to rule out the possibility that external variables (like the season, news events, etc.) affected everyone's blood pressure.

d. We would like to know the standard deviation of the changes, as well. If the standard deviation is very small, then 6.7 points would seem like a significant change. If not, 6.7 points could be due to naturally occurring variability.

28. Answers may vary. Suppose you select the next 12 batches of sake for the experiment, in order to replicate the experiment. For each batch, divide the yest into two parts. Randomly select half of the yest and play Mozard for that half and no Mozart for the other half. When the sake is done, have trained sake testers taste samples from each group and rate the sake. In order to eliminate potential bias on the part of the testers, blinding should be used. Do not tell the tasters whether or not the sake has been brewed with Mozart playing next to the yeast. Compare the ratings for the Mozart and the non-Mozart sake. Try to keep other variables (type of yeast, size of batch, etc.) under control.

December Already?

Can you believe we're already approaching the Holiday Season? Before you know it you'll all be dominating the AP exam and getting ready to head off to college...

Wednesday Homework: READ CHAPTER 13; if you take notes, you can use them on a potential reading quiz.

Today we started some notes on chapter 13 and we'll do the same tomorrrow. Remember, we'll have our vocab test Friday.

You will have the matching vocab test as well as a couple other questions, maybe asking you to explain, as well as the possibility of one question regarding surveys and bias. So this may be bigger than the usual vocab test--or it may not. Guess you'll just have to make sure you know everything so you're prepared! (Sorry).

We should have all our notes on experiments wrapped up by the end of this week. We'll do some practice next week, as well as begin reviewing and have our test on our third unit--gathering data. Then it's on to probability for a week and a half before Xmas.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Tuesday Homework:

So after surveying some students it turned out we practiced some more with chapter 12 today. Sooo, your homework TOMORROW will be to READ CHAPTER 13.

TONIGHT, you need to complete problems 2,3,5 on the open-ended worksheet I handed out in class. (Period B, you need to finish both the open ended and multiple choice).

And don't forget you have a vocab test Friday!

Monday, November 29, 2010

Vocab Test Friday! Here's the list...

Random, Outcome, Component, Trial, Response Variable, Pseudorandom, Census, Cluster, Strata/Stratified, Convenience, SRS, Voluntary Response Bias/Sample, Multistage, Systematic, Response Bias, Voluntary Response Bias, Nonresponse bias, undercoverage, target sample, sampling frame, population parameter, sample statistic, sampling error/variability, representative sample.

Those are your vocab words. I'm not sure why I stopped capitalizing mid paragraph. My bad.

Back from break!

Back to work! Hope you all enjoyed your few days off...I'll have updated grades for you by the end of tomorrow.

Here's tonight's hw:

Page 290: 17, 23, 26, 31

Tomorrow night you'll be asked to read chapter 13 if you want to get a head start.

No Homework! Enjoy the pep rally...

First off, I apologize for taking too much time in getting your tests back (it has only been 1 week, but still, that's too long). Since I've been slacking I suppose it's only fair I allow you to take some time off...and for that reason I will not give you homework until I get everything back (likely Monday).

If you'd like to get a head start, read chapter 12--It may not be an officially assigned homework, but it'll give you a better understanding of all the stuff we're going to talk about. At least skim it...

So until Monday, enjoy your weekend...and yes, you will have homework over Thanksgiving break.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Here are some general steps for writing a process...

Wednesday HW!

I hope you didn't do those book problems yet...kinda changed my mind. If you did, show them to me and I'll throw a couple EC points on tonight's take home quiz.

So--homework tonight is the take home quiz about blood donor's! I just added it to the "Powerpoints and Assignments" link so if you need a copy, there it is. It's titled, "Blood Donor Simulation Quiz."

Tomorrow we'll do some examples with random number tables, and then it's on to chapter 12.

Remember, QUIZ MONDAY. You WILL be timed! 20 min only!

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Tuesday HW

Homework tonight:

Complete the data collection process for the "One Boy Family Planning" activity to be discussed in class tomorrow. Remember, you just need to jot some notes for our discussion tomorrow for the questions--you do not need to write an essay!

So tomorrow we'll talk about this stuff and then get into some random number tables.

Monday, November 15, 2010

Monday!

Today was a new start for everybody; if you were absent, take a look at chapter 11 and make sure you get someone's notes. The most important things you need to do from the chapter include understanding what randomness IS, and then being able to use that information to write a simulation.

Homework tonight:

Weekend Homework

Hey! Easy weekend this week...just complete the first quarter review worksheet I handed out in class; this should be the easiest 16 points ever offered. Just make sure you show thinking, and be honest. I can't make this course better for you if you don't offer your thoughts. I appreciate it.

On Monday we'll get into chapter 11. New stuff! I'm really pumped--it's a clean slate for all of us, a fresh start. Come ready with your game face!

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Sorry I was absent...test is still on

I'm really sorry I didn't make it in today guys. I know we were supposed to have a review--since I couldn't be there to help you study and the test is STILL FRIDAY, here are some tips for studying...
  • Use your Barron's book! Remember that white paperback I handed out in class? Use it! Go to the section on "Bivariate Data" and look at examples.
  • Use the blog! Use the "Stat Tutorials" link to study topics regarding linear regression.
  • Use your textbook! Look at chapters 7-9 primarily. There will be little from chapter 10.
  • Do the practice problems mentioned in the previous post! Not only will these help you study, but they'll get you a few extra credit problems. To get the extra credit you must show work (since the answers are in the back of the book). Use the back to check your answers though for sure!
  • Use the packet we filled out in class with all the writing templates typed out! If you know that packet, you're golden.
  • If I were you, or if I wrote a test on Linear Regression, I'd study these topics--these may or may not be the test questions... :)
  1. Is a linear model appropriate? (Check the 3 conditions!)
  2. Describe an association (describe shape, direction, and strength, reference r and R^2)
  3. Write the equation from a computer output (or if given the data)
  4. Interpret slope (remember, slope is rise over run--rewrite this in context to deduce the meaning)
  5. Interpret y-intercept (remember from Algebra, for the y-int x=0. So this tells us the predicted value if the explanatory variable is 0).
  6. Interpret the coefficient of determination (R^2 tells us the percent of variation in the response variable that can be accounted for by variation in the explanatory; or, it tells us the percent of variation in the response that can be attributed to a linear relationship with the explanatory).
  7. Use a model to predict ("plug n' chug")
  8. Calculate a residual ("plug n' chug," then actual minus predicted--y-yhat)
  9. Predict for an x-value outside those given--extrapolation! (not confident in this prediction)
  10. Recognize outliers, leverage, and influence from a graph.

Study! And don't forget your multiple choice tests Friday! Hopefully the class time to work on them helped!

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Test Coming Up!

Soo....tomorrow we'll start with some new stuff. Your homework tonight is to grade and comment on someone else's paper--if you simply list a letter grade for each part, you will not receive full credit. I need comments! These comments will really serve as the foundation for your homework grade.

Here are some problems that I recommend to use to study for Friday's test. These are not an assigned homework, but are a good representatino of what you need to know for Friday, and you can check your progress in the back of the book. We'll look at some of these for our after school review on Wednesday.
Page 245: 1,3,9,11,17, 19, 21, 31, 37
Aaaannnd, if you hand in ALL of these problems (with work neatly shown) you'll get 4 extra credit points on your test.

I'm pumped for tomorrow--randomness and simulations.

Monday, November 8, 2010

Monday HW!

Here's tonight's bookwork...I'll update again later on or tomorrow with some stuff about the rest of the week and the test.

Page 238: 1, 3, 5, 27, 31

Pop Quiz Tuesday on Influential Points!

Weekend Homework: complete the "packet" that you started Thursday night for homework. You can skip the question that refers to a "Special TI Function" on your calculator. This is a tough assignment--use your book to help you! This is all in chapter 10.

On Monday in class we'll grade our AP Problems--this will be a graded activity.

Don't be surprised if you have a pop quiz (probably Tuesday)--just a little 15 minute activity, probably asking to explain if a point is influential, talk about some residuals...so be ready!

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Grades Close Friday!

Do your homework tonight! Finish up that leverage/influence worksheet I handed out yesterday!

Tomorrow in class we'll finish looking at influence and leverage and such and then move on to our chapter 10 so we can finish up and start talking about collecting data! Yay!

Don't forget to get me those stamps for Friday!

Thursday, October 28, 2010

Thurday, Friday, and our Vocab Test

Period B!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys and gals! I took number 43 off your homework, so you don't have to do that for Monday! I hope you check this!

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Next Few Days...

Soooo today we finished up some interpretations in class...we'll finish with R^2 on Monday. Here's the plan for the next few days:

Tomorrow in class we'll work on some practice problems in class in groups. Then, Friday I have my Math Modeling field trip so you'll be working on 3 AP problems in class--these will be a 36 point project grade! 12 points each! Focus, and make sure you do a good job! Then, over the weekend you'll have to read chapter 9--you can take notes if you like, if so, you can use them on a potential reading quiz.

Homework:

Wednesday:
complete both the multiple choice worksheet and the chapter 8 worksheet you got in class. I'm going to grade this MC so do a good job!

Thursday: page 194: 42, 49. (but since I won't see you Friday I'll be checking this Monday while you take your reading quiz)

Friday: complete those AP problems in class! For homework you need to read chapter 9 and make sure you complete Thursday's book problems (I'll be checking them Monday).

Monday, October 18, 2010

New Link (Calculator Stuff)

I just found a pretty sweet website that outlines the processes for different functions on your calculator along with screen shots. I think it could definitely be pretty helpful as we continue to develop our library of calculator applications. You can find the link on the right under "Classroom Resources."

Monday HW

Sorry I didn't make it today. I swear I finished your tests this weekend though, I have them (and grades 100% up to date) for you tomorrow.

Make sure you get your subwork done (if you haven't)! It's all being graded for an 18 point project, so get it done!

Homework tonight:

Wednesday: finish chapter 7 multiple choice (quiz grade)

Today in class we'll wrap up our chapter 7 notes. Tomorrow, you'll start with an activity exploring correlation, and then begin the chapter 7 MC in class.

Period B Students: since tomorrow is PSAT day, you don't have class--if you like, you're welcome to come to Statistics periods E or G (if you have lunch or study)!

Thursday, October 7, 2010

Long Time, No Post...

It's been a few days...sorry about that.

STUDY FOR YOUR TEST!

TAKE HOME MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST DUE TOMORROW! No excuses. If you don't have this, you will receive a zero on the take home test.

Weekend Homework: Read chapter 7. Yes, you have a reading quiz. I promise.

See you all Tuesday! (If I don't see you tomorrow when I'm off to MCC).

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

Lot's of News (and Tues/Wed Homework)

Sorry about the lack of post yesterday.

Monday's Homework: Chapter 6 MC questions (22 @ 2points = 44 point Quiz grade!)

Tuesday/Wednesday Homework: Complete the following problems from page 131 in your book (all are reprinted on the handout from class): 1, 3, 13, 20, 25, 27, 29, 35, 38.
This will be graded as a 12 point project grade. You will be graded solely on effort, as these problems are intended to prepare you for the quiz. To receive all 12 points you must show all of your work/calculations on a separate sheet of paper.
AFTER SCHOOL REVIEW FOR OUR TEST IS THIS WEDNESDAY!
And last, but certainly not least, we'll have our unit one test on Friday. I WILL NOT BE HERE. I'll be at MCC with my math modeling classes. It your your responsibility to be on time and immediately start the test; whatever you do not finish will be considered incorrect. Be responsible, come in, grab your test, and work quietly for the duration of the period.
Thursday HW: On Thursday night you will be given a take home MC portion of your test. This will be collected Friday.
I will be returning to school F period so all work MUST be handed in. I will grade both the take home (MC) and in-class (open ended/FR) portions of the test this weekend.

Friday, October 1, 2010

Weekend Homework

For Monday you'll need to finish up the SAT computer lab. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED! This is a 44 point project grade and seeing as we had 1.5 class periods to work on it there's no excuse not to have it Monday, and have it done well.

Also, remember to study for your VOCAB TEST MONDAY. I just whipped it up (during my meeting) and I think you should all do pretty well. Make sure you can list at least 3 types of graph for categorical data, and at least 4 types for quantitative data...

If you have any questions over the weekend you can always email me at fred.carofano@gmail.com.

It was nice to talk to some other Stat teachers from across the state today and find out we're right on track with our pacing. It's been a really great start for us this year--keep up the good work!

Enjoy some nice weather this weekend finally! Study your flashcards outside! See you Monday!

Thursday HW And more rain :(

Tonight's homework: page 127 39, 42, 44, 46

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Homework: Wednesday (Collins!)

Here's your assignment for the night...you don't really need any book or resources to get it done, just your brain and something to write with! No excuses!

Task:
1.Outline the process for finding percentages/percentiles using the Normal model.
2.Outline the process for finding a cutoff value, if given “highest 20%,” or “middle 49,” etc.

FCA’s: (each @ 5 points)
1. Student correctly outlines both processes (correct statistical steps).
2. Student correctly/appropriately uses statistical vocabulary
3. Student provides mathematical example for each of the 2 processes above.

Extra Credit for Quiz:
Outline the process for creating a boxplot (like above).

Back to the grind...

Can you believe that progress report grades are already closing this Friday? Craziness.

Homework for tonight: complete the worksheet regarding the Normal model I handed out in. You can skip "part d" on the bottom. And this is not worth 28 points as stated at the top--this is our first practice, so it'll count as any other homework assignment. (Yes, I'm checking.)

I apologize for the lack of real data on this assighnment...it's not usually my style, but this is an actual assignment from a college course so I thought it'd be interesting.

Friday, September 24, 2010

It's the weekend!

Can you believe that this upcoming week is the last week of September? Wow. It's flying by already...before you know it, we'll be on winter break.

Anyway, that's enough dreaming about vacations. For now, you have 9 problems to do for homework.

Page 124: 16-20, 24, 25
Page 133: 15, 17

Do it up! You can expect some review questions on each homework this week as we move toward our Unit 1 Exam.

And now you all have this sweet Barron's review guide to help enhance understanding; if you come in on Monday with "I didn't get it," that's still a 0 on your homework. Of course there's nothing wrong with getting homework incorrect--this is practice--but not even trying something, showing some thinking, is totally unacceptable. Step your game up.

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Wednesday Homework

I am 100% definitely checking this (and the next few)...

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

How was the quiz today? (It's not over yet...)

How was it? Today was our first "big deal" quiz I'd say. The chapter 3 quiz we had was pretty intense too, but today's quiz was challenging and worth more points...

But it's not over yet...

Your homework tonight is to complete the 18 multiple choice questions handed out in class...You will be graded out of 10 points for the quiz grade.

ANY EXTRA POINTS YOU EARN WILL GO TOWARD YOUR MC TEST GRADE. So, for example, let's say you got an 15/10 on tonight's multiple choice, but had a 20/30 on the test...well thanks to your hard work, those extra 5 points turn your test into a 25/30. So as you can see, tonight's work is incredibly important. Try to get a 100 and add 8 points to your grade! Work hard!

And if you have the opportunity, work together!

Monday, September 20, 2010

Quiz Tomorrow!

Study! If you want some problems to look at, here are some I picked out from chapter 5 that resemble what's on our quiz. These start on page 91:

3,5, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 24(a-d), 29, 31, 37

I know you've done some of these on your homework assignments; these are just the best questions to look at. Here's the format for your quiz:

You have a short answer section that requires you to create a histogram, find mean and standard deviation, describe a distribution, and identify if the mean/st. dev. are appropriate. You're also asked how summary statistics might change if we add a new data value (like #7 on page 92). The other part of this section asks you to read/interpret 4 boxplots and determine how mean is affected by shape.

Then, you'll have an AP question that asks you to create a boxplot and answer a few questions, comparing variability and describing the distributions.

Finally, you'll have 12 multiple questions as a take home portion--but still part of your grade.

Weekend!

It's pretty much the perfect temperature outside right now (well, we know I like it cold judging from the class); grab your multiple choice, call up some friends from class, and go sit outside and bust out that test. Multiple heads are better than one; collaborate, work together, and get an A!

So you have the take home 15 questions for a 30 point test grade due Monday. NO EXCEPTIONS! If you forget it or don't have it, you'll be starting your test category (the biggest proportion of your grade) with a 0--no bueno.

On Monday we'll keep practicing with boxplots and have a quiz Tuesday.

Other than that, just enjoy the next two days! Go Giants!

*Just for the record, if you have an urgent/homework question, email me at fred.carofano@gmail.com, I'll see it faster than a blog comment.

Monday....first five day week :(

Homework tonight----finish the 13 MC AP problems! Remember that I'm going to collect and grade this, so make sure you finish! No exceptions! This is 26 points in your Projects/AP Problems category--first grade for this, so do well! Read carefully!

For those interested, here's my plan for the week. On Tuesday we'll start our chapter 5 notes after we talk about the MC from tonight; Wednesday we'll finish these notes. On Thursday, you'll work through your two AP problems in groups, along with a boxplot/histogram activity. Then, Friday, you'll take a quick quiz based on your matching, and then....something else.

Here's my homework plan for the next few days:

Tuesday: Read Chapter 5 (and I already photocopied the reading quiz...)
Wednesday: 5, 9 (can use calc), 11, 13, 17, 21, 23, 27, 29
Thursday: 7, 31b, 33, 35, 39, 47

Thursday, September 9, 2010

Thursday, Friday, Monday HW

I'm on top of my game today...early post...

Here's my plan for your homework for the next few days...

Thursday (page 64): 9, 11, 19, 21 (make a histogram), 29, 31

Friday (page 64): 3, 5, 22, 23, 25, 34, 37

Whenever a problem asks you to "Describe the distribution," you need to talk about "SOCS." That is, "Shape, Outliers, Center, and Spread." Tell me the overall shape of the curve (you may need to look in your book for examples of skewed, symmetric, etc.), whether there appears to be unusual values, give me an approximation of the center of the data (just by looking), and talk about how spread out it is (from "10 to 1,000" for example).

On Monday (in class) you'll work in small groups on some AP-style multiple choice questions regarding quantitative graphs and then Tuesday we'll move into chapter 5.

Your homework Monday night will be to reach chapter 5 (if you want to get ahead). Yes, reading quiz….probably a good idea to start reading now...

Now let's see how class goes today and if this plan actually sticks!

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Quiz Tomorrow!

For homework tonight finish (a) and (b) on the 2007 Form B AP Problem (stemplot question).

And don't forget to study! Quiz tomorrow on Chapter 3--independence, finding percentages from contingency tables, and some categorical graphs.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Tuesday 9/7 HW!

Read Chapter 4 tonight! Remember, notes are optional, but if you do take them you can use them on our reading quiz. Don't worry, the reading quiz is just to check you read--not see if you can do all of the math just from reading!

And we have a quiz Thursday!

And I know I said I'd put the answer to 21 on the blog--but I forgot it's an odd!--so check the back of your book!

Labor Day HW

Yo yo yo! For the three day weekend I need you to complete all of the problems on the handout I provided in class Friday--EXCEPT NUMBER 20!

I know this is tough...try your best and we'll talk about it all Tuesday. However, don't give me a little "i didn't get it" and expect credit. This course is all about THINKING. So try your best, and you'll be aight.

And yes, I'm checking. Here's some help...

Number 21 asks you to investigate whether admissions decisions are independent of race/ethnicity. Well, if they are in fact indepdendent, we should see the same proportions of accepted students as in our total applicants. Think about it--if your ethnicity doesn't matter and 40% of our applicants are white, then we'd expect that same 40% to show in our accepted students.

So, here's how we start. First, we need to find the overall percentages of each group. What percent of everyone was Black/Hispanic? What percent of everyone was Asian? What percent of everyone was White? Calculate these three values.

Next, we want to look at only the accepted students. What percent of the accepted students where Black/Hispanic? What percent of accepted students where Asian? What percent of accepted students were white?

To conclude, we compare these values. If the overall proportions match up with the "accepted" proportions, then admissions decisions and race/ethnicity were independent.

Good luck!

Thursday 9/2 HW

You have two tasks...first off, complete problems 13 and 14 from the handout given yesterday. (This is to prepare you for that pop quiz we have....)

Second, I want you to create four graphs for the data set below: bar chart, relative bar chart, pie chart, and relative frequency table.

Central Connecticut State U. Cost/Year:

Room and Board: $9,122
Tuition: $3,742
Books and Other Expenses: $1,920
Required Fees: $3,672

Tuesday Aug 31 HW

First day of hw!

Simply read through each of the stat raps and circle/underline/highlight as many statistics references as you can. Please don't guess--identify those references you're confident are related to stats. Then tally these and record the total; we'll use this data for our classroom explorations.

First Day Homework!

It's here! A new year, new classes, new challenges. And most importantly, a new chance for us all to start fresh and set the sky as our limit. In other words, we're going to dominate AP Stats all year and prove it on the AP Exam.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing you all for our first day! I'll be getting everything squared away, making photocopies, and all that other good stuff today (Monday); when you arrive on Tuesday we'll hop right into some statistical thinking.

Just so you know, here's the tentative plan:
Tuesday: read our first article, discuss, start thinking statistically
Wednesday: Chapter 2: What is Statistics?
Thursday: Chapter 2 Wrap-Up/Start Chapter 3
Friday: Chapter 2 QQ, Finish Chapter 3
Tuesday: Chapter 3 Wrap Up (study for your quiz!)

Of course that's just a plan, and as you'll learn about me, my plans are always tentative :)

First extra credit opportunity--if you come to school on the first day with this schedule written, as well as two other things you liked about the blog (so you have to explore the blog), you'll get 3 points on the first quiz! (And this is all or nothing--no partial EC)

See you all in a couple days! I'm pumped!

New Stat Kids!

Yo! This is the first official post devoted to all my new stat kids. I'm currently sitting in a classrom at Eastern CT State U. getting my statistics on. Literally as we speak I'm looking through each and every powerpoint and worksheet, trying to find any and every place I can improve, as well as getting some great ideas from stat teachers across the state.

As for your summer responsibilities, relax, recoup, and get ready for a tough but rewarding year. I'm already starting to feel excited for a new start and a new stat group; get your brains ready for a bunch of hard work. I think you'll really find it to be a rewarding class, not only in improving as a student, but simply in appreciating the craft of statistics.

Over the summer take some time to familiarize yourself with this blog. I plan on making this site a staple in our classroom throughout the year. Look at all of the resources you have at your disposal; take some time to look through some of the early chapter powerpoints and what we'll be starting with; and of course, take some time to really listen to the stat raps for a preview.

I hope all of you have had an enjoyable summer. At some point in August I'll be posting an extra credit opportunity--easy points, you just need to keep checking the blog to find out!

YOU WILL HAVE HOMEWORK ON THE FIRST DAY! Until then, enjoy all your days and nights. I will see you all soon.

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Goodbye/Hello :( :)

To my graduating kids--the big day is almost upon us! I can't wait to see you all tomorrow with your beaming smiles, hot outfits, and caps and gowns, as you get ready to start the path toward doing big things. You all possess such incredible potential and I have no doubt I'll be seeing some of you on the news and tv and such someday. It's definitely a bittersweet moment--I'm so proud of all of you for everything you've done not only in statistics this year, but just in your lives overall. You should be too. I hope you all keep in touch. I didn't think I'd be able to develop such a tight bond with 75 stat kids just due to sheer numbers, but you've all proven to be special people and easily conquered the crazy student-teacher ratio. I love you! Congratulations!

And with each ending, comes a new beginning....

Yo new stat kids! The bar has been set high by this year's crew. I have the utmost confidence you can continue to raise that bar rather than falling short of it. Many of you I already know through SAT class or just passing in the halls and such, and I know I have a lot of really good, smart kids coming in.

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT:

Just check this blog. To be honest, the next post likely will not be until July 19ish, b/c I'll be at a statistics conference all week getting the mathematical juices flowing. I also have to dedicate some time and figure out a way to get all these statistics projects up to check out. So for now, just look around the blog...check out all the links, some old posts, just explore when you're bored and websurfing.

And relax! Be ready for a lot of hard work next year!

Senior Picnic!

I miss you guys! Hope you're all enjoying your picnic! I'm almost done through this loong meeting, planning out all the fun Saturdays and such for next year!

Don't forget to tell every single person you know about the Stat Rap (Remix). I can't be famous and give you all a cut if you don't help a brotha out.

Monday, 5/17

Yo yo! Today was the last day we'll work in class on the project in class. To some of you, great work; to others, I'm nervous about how much class time you wasted. Hopefully you step you're game up at home. Everyone has an awesome, interesting idea to address. I'm really looking forward to seeing your work toward the end of the year.

This is not a project where everyone will get an A for trying. You have an incredible amount of time, as well as time in class. I expect to see your work reflect the amount of time you've had. Further, to those of you with groups, I expect to see four times more work than others, and to see you all contribute. Don't take this lightly--THIS IS 40% OF YOUR FOURTH QUARTER GRADE!!!!!!!!

I'll miss you all tomorrow and Wed--be in DC with Soucy for the awards ceremony. You'll be watching 21 in class. Enjoy. If there are any issues, it's on my desktop--just click and play.

See you Thursday! On Thursday we're starting ancient number systems!

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Stat Rap is up!

Check out the new "Statistics Raps" link. You get both raps, and the radio interview I did (if interested). Tell all your friends!

There's also a link to the Cool Schools from last year.
And by just below the other link, I meant I still have to convert the file.....in time. Soon. Relax.

Friday

Turns out that whole plan I wrote up yesterday is all a lie.

Hope you enjoyed the stat rap remix. You can find it just below the other one now!

I'm also going to have a direct link to the two raps.

Tomorrow we'll get crackin' on those projects! And it's Friday!

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Wednesday!

A lil' more Numb3rs today...hopefully you enjoyed the exploration of voting and statistics and such. Might be a good idea to take notes, b/c you're going to have to do a write up at the end, with specific references to episodes.

Other than that, stay on top of your game. We'll finish the week with three Numb3rs episodes. Then, on Monday we'll go to the computer lab to do some writing about our views.

Tuesday and Wednesday of next week I won't be here--you'll be watching 21 in class.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT THOSE PROJECTS!!!! NEED TO HAVE YOUR CALENDAR FILLED OUT FOR TOMORROW!!!

Monday, May 10, 2010

Monday!

Our first Monday post-AP exam! We made it! Again, I'm still so proud of all of you.

Today in class we started talking about the projects. The form I handed out in class is also available under Notes and Assignments--"Stat Final Project."

Remember, this WEDNESDAY I expect to see your calendar with an outline for your project; give yourself deadlines, days to meet, etc. so that we can use our time productively and get this done.

Enjoy Monday! And I think this is the first time I get to write it......NO HOMEWORK!

Saturday, May 8, 2010

Final Project

Just finished typing up the FCA's and such for your final project. It's super long, but don't be too intimidated. It outlines approximately 6 FCA's for four different types of project. You'll only be choosing one to do, and potentially in collaboration with up to 3 of your peers. So that means it's less work than it may appear. I'm excited to see what you all come up with.

It's under the Notes and Assignments link. Toward the top you'll see "Statistics Final Project" (I know you probably instinctively scroll to the bottom to click on the Stat Rap).

Enjoy your Sunday! Can't wait to see you all Monday! We haven't had class (with me) in so long it seems! I miss you guys and gals!

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

We made it!

As we speak, better put, as you read, I'm sitting with knots in my stomach as you all tear through the AP exam. Can you believe it's here? This year seems like it's gone so fast to me...and to be honest, I'm a little sad about that. I've truly enjoyed my opportunity with all of you this year. You've proven to be an incredible group of young adults, and have only cemented my belief with the turnout we've had for our past three reviews. As last year's students will tell you, I thought extremely highly of them--they set the bar very high, and coming into this year, I was tentative to see if those expectations could be met. You have all far exceeded all expectations, and I truly thank you for all of your hard work.

Although we still have some work to do, the remaining days will be a little more fun. We'll have the opportunity to explore any topics you've found interesting, and hopefully watch some entertaining videos/presentations.

I know you all are doing well. I wish you the best of luck, and no matter what happens, I'm incredibly proud of each and every AP Statistics student. Without you all I would never win any awards or find any praise--thanks again!

As for tomorrow, you'll be watching Numb3rs--at the beginning of class, Dr. Kenney (Math Dep't Head) will be coming in to talk to you. On Thursday and Friday, during periods C,E,F, potential EHHS teachers will be coming in for a model lesson, and he'll be giving you different roles to play. You should be honored that you've been chosen to be the "test" class. This shows a level of trust in you from administration, something you surely deserve. I expect you will all be at your best.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

One more week!

We're getting there...the next few days will be crucial.

I'm really hoping to have a good review on Friday. I know it's the end of the week, but especially if you aren't attending Saturday I think this would be a great opportunity.

Also, don't forget about review Monday. I would hope/expect that you all attend 2 of these three review opportunities.

I contacted Shaun Keane but I'm thinking it'll be tough on short notice to get something together. He has kids to help too! We'll see him Saturday though, for sure.

I also wanted to take the time to thank all of you so much for your congratulations. To those of you who were in my room that morning, it really made my date. This is a pretty huge moment for me as a teacher, and I hope you all take your own pride. I never could win anything without your hard work, commitment to the course, and belief in me as your teacher. I appreciate all you do. And thank you so much!

Onto the business--homework tonight:

Page 658: 1, 3, 5, 9, 10

I got a lot of work done thus far today. Still slacking on grading, and I'll step that up, but I made up a solid list of topics to review as well as a pretty sweet chart that reviews all of the statistical tests/confidence intervals, talks about what to write, and how to show your work.

See you tomorrow!

April Vacation

First, and most importantly, I sincerely apologize for not being there this week. I hope you do not think I have failed you as we push toward the AP exam, and further, hope you do not think I'm posting from some remote island in the Bahamas. I've unfortunately been bound to my couch since school ended Tuesday, and would have absolutely preferred to be in school with you guys. The crazy thing is, after 1 day of no school, I really start to miss you guys and gals...

As for break. Put in some time studying. The best possible thing you can do is work through the practice exams--use your Barron's book and just keep plugging through practice tests. For a change of scenery, go online and try some of the tests I have linked.

IF AT ANY POINT YOU ARE STUDYING AND HAVE A QUESTION DO NOT HESITATE TO EMAIL ME--ABOUT ANYTHING! It's the least I can do for you after missing 3 days. fred.carofano@gmail.com

As for break homework...you have a practice MC test due Monday. If you click on the "Notes" link (first one), you'll find an electronic version of the test there. I believe it is the second assignment listed. THIS IS MANDATORY. My sub plans called for this to be announced in class, so you really have no excuse.

Other than that, I'll look through the rest of your subwork--as long as you tried your best, you're all set.

Thank you all for your understanding. Again, please email me with anything you need to know. If I need to show some solutions written out, we'll figure it out. It's 2010.

Enjoy the break.

I can't wait to see you all in class again!

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Homework! Tuesday!

Sorry if my energy wasn't up to par today, I just wasn't feelin so hot. Hopefully I don't have hepatitis C due to all my tats. :)

Today was a bad day to miss.. we got a lot of class time to do our homework.. which is to do the worksheet that was handed out during the assembly.
Also remember the take home tests are due tomorrow as well. (there was a multiple choice portion and an opened ended one). Hand it in.

David Bock's Here!

Hope you all enjoyed your day today with Bock...it was a really good introduction to matched pairs; we'll continue to work with this idea on Wednesday and a little bit Thursday. Then, we'll get into those last 2 chapters!

Isn't that crazy to think about? We'll be done with all of the stuff on the AP exam by next Friday! Then it's vacation (yes, you will have a review packet), and one week of in-class review.

Homework tonight: Don't forget about your take home test (due Wed.). Otherwise, think of some good question for Bock tomorrow!

MANDATORY ASSEMBLY PERIODS B,C IN EAST LECTURE HALL, TUESDAY, APRIL 6.

Friday, April 2, 2010

Easter Weekend!

Yo yo yo! Hope you all enjoy the long weekend...just think, normally you'd be just starting period F right now!

I hear there's some confusion about what the homework is (which is a little disconcerting, given I've told you about the take home test daily, all week)

TAKE HOME TEST--MC AND FREE RESPONSE PARTS--DUE BY WEDNESDAY. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. I will start collecting papers on Monday if you're already done.

Remember, this is the first grade of the fourth quarter, so make sure you get this done. You are totally on your own. If you ask me a question, I will defer you to one of your resources (Baron's, textbook). Try your best! "I didn't know how to do this one," is not an excuse to hand it in late. That's the point of a test--to see what you know!

Also, if you want extra credit write something for the school paper! Write about what we having going on in the EHHS school community, whether Stats related or not! But remember, it's gotta be electronic.

Lastly, we'll have David Bock in class Monday and start talking about Matched Pairs! Yes!

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Homework!

Periods C and E should complete the following. Remember, this is worth double, and will be collected--so do it on separate paper!

Page 566: 2,4,17,19,20,32

As for Period F, complete the same page, but only the four even problems.

We have 17 more class periods until the AP exam, and we still have 3 new chapters to cover, along with finishing up all this inference about means. In other words, we need absolute focus for 17 days (18 including the exam day). What we don't finish in class will end up being work for you on your own time.

Focus.

Monday!

The answer to the "z score" poll question was in fact E! Nice job! 18/20 = 90% correct!

Homework tonight: page 566: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8(abc only)

Don't forget--extra credit! Write for the school paper by Monday!

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Extra Credit? I thought he wasn't giving any?

One final extra credit opportunity as the quarter comes to a close....write for the school paper! Anything you write is due on April 5th, to me, electronically. I will then forward this to Ms. Porch and Ms. Griffin (or you can give it to them if you know who they are--but I'll need a copy as well for your points).

You can write anything for the paper--it doesn't have to even be stats! For non-stat stuff, you'll get extra credit if you make it to the published paper (I can't just give away points for any weak little story--it's gotta be legit, and the editors will know what's "legit' far better than I).

Ideally, of course, you'll write about statistics. Many of you already interviewed David Bock and wrote up your findings--simply double check your writing, make it better, tighten up all the loose ends, and give me a nice final copy (with no swears, Meredith!) and you'll get points for stuff you already did!

The same goes to those of you who wrote about Saturday sessions or our general extra-curricular statistics stuff. However, many people gave me sloppy, quickly (pathetically) done papers. Make them better! They need to by typed and electronic!

Let's make the school paper awesome! And take the credit! :)

Friday, March 26, 2010

Homework!

Don't forget your AP problem is due Monday!

Also, finish up page 544: 11, 17, 33...but I'm pretty sure you should already have 11 done :)

Greetings! =)

Hope you guys on your field trip(s) had fun.. but we had even more fun, learning about new stuff like Gosset's t and degrees of freedom. There were like 12 students in class today, it was awesome! =] .. but we still have homework.
It's to read chapter 23! ..perhaps there will be a reading quiz.. maybe.

*IMPORTANT*

Take Home Test Due Monday!

Yoooo! Can you tell when it's actually me posting vs. Zaiba? If not, this is me.

I'm currently posting as I gaze out into the sea of students diligently answering test questions...I'm hoping, and confident (I am 90% confident, to be precise), that we can destroy this test as a class. I'm hoping that after we enter our grades (using clickers) on Monday that the test is literally blown to smithereens because we did so well. I'm not cleaning up all the little shreds of the blown up test though.

Thanks to all of you who gave me food today, even if you were just trying to get some extra points.

DON'T FORGET YOUR TAKE HOME TEST DUE MONDAY! GET AN A! EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION!

I think I'll periodically be posting my email responses to questions on the blog, so keep checking...you might find some valuable information.

And last, but certainly not least....NEW STUFF MONDAY! Woop woop! I know you're all equally excited as I. I don't think it'll be too difficult, given what we already know about inference.

The end is literally near. Only 5-6ish weeks before you guys go get your Stand and Deliver on and ace the AP exam.

Have a great weekend!

Happy St Patrick's Day!!

Greetings fellow statisticians! :) and in the spirit of today's holiday.. greeen!! =D

Class consisted of review and going over some AP problems.

--> Homework for tonight: AP problem given at the beginning of class; a through d and remember to add in e: which is to construct a 95% confidence interval and interpret it yo :)

96% Confidence Interval

My bad guys...on the homework tonight you can't just use the table to find our critical value (z star) for 96%. We'll have to use inverse norm (invnorm() on our calculator. Go to 2nd --> VARS to see the distribution menu and select invnorm. Then, think about the percent of data that lies to the left of our confidence interval (96%) (draw a Normal model if you're not sure). Enter this value (as a decimal) into invnorm and it'll give us the negative z-star (just make it positive!)

Monday back! :)

Hey guys, hope everyone had a good weekend minus 1 hour =(

Homework for tonight: AP Problem.. due tomorrow.. do it.

STUDY STUDY STUDY for the test FRIDAY!!! :]

Reviews every Thursday! show up.. just sayin' ;)
*no more Monday + Wednesdays after school. Mr Carofano will be teaching a SAT prep class so if you want one-on-one help.. SIGN UP/make an appointment. Sheets will be posted.

Some help on those AP problems...

I don't know about losing one hour of sleep today....stupid clock changes.

I just sent an email response to a good question, relating to problems 1c and number 2; figured I'd throw that bad boy up here for anyone in need.

Alright, let's see how well we can figure this out via email...

First off, letter C...so here's the scenario--someone comes in to have their blood tested. What can happen? The test can be positive or negative. If it's positive, then the person will undergo two more tests; if one of these two tests is positive, the blood sample will receive more expensive and accurate testing.

So our job is to translate this situation to "And" and "Or." So the first sample has to be positive; then, we can have a few situations.

If the first test is negative, there's no more testing involved so we don't care about this situation.

POSITIVE and NEGATIVE and POSITIVE--What happens?
POSITIVE and NEGATIVE and NEGATIVE
POSITIVE and POSITIVE -- Remember, once one of the additional two tests is positive, we're onto the more expensive stuff. So the third won't matter in this case.

Now you just need to find the probability we have a positive or negative test based on all of the information given, and decide which of the scenarios above answer our question.

Onto number 2:

This question first asks about expected value and variance when combining random variables. This is chapter 16 in our book, and there's an example on page 377 which is similar to this, but instead of "M - W" the book is an example of addition.

For (a), you should be able to figure out how to find the expected value and standard deviation after looking at the example. Part (b) asks you to use a Normal approximation based on your answers to (a) to find a probability, so you'll need z-scores (you got that!). The trick is to think--if the woman is taller than the mean, what "kinds" of answers would we get by doing M - W? Then, find the probability of the answer to that question.

I hope this helped...good luck!

Help us pay for college!

Hey guys, it's Courtney Labossiere and Sarah Ribeiro. In case you haven't heard, we've been entered in a scholarship competition for $20,000. All you have to do is register with Zinch, which is a social networking site that also provides scholarship opportunities. After that, you can vote for both of us on the March Madnezz section of the site.

There are four more rounds of voting, so we ask that you vote once between now and March 7 (for States voting), once between March 9 and March 16 (for Regional voting - if we get through), and, if we progress, once between March 19 and 22, between March 23 and 25, March 26 and March 30, and March 30 and April 1. If we get through, The Championship Round is from 9:00 am and 10:00 pm April 2 - winners will be announced April 3!

There is also a separate part of the competition; you can join our Facebook fan pages and that will enter us into the Cinderella 6, which is based on number of fans.

Thanks guys!

Another good question about writing the paper....

When you guys write the essay, you should really just be summarizing the worksheet we started in class into an essay format. Use appropriate vocab, be conscise/to the point. No babbling! No bs! No fluff!

I'll be collecting that worksheet but mostly just to check out your math. All of the other information I'll find in your essay. I'm thinking somewhere from 1-2 pages typed.

Anyway, here's my answer to an email...

Alright, good questions...

First off, for your conditions...what do you think? If you asked all seniors, did you take a random sample? Since we didn't, we'll say "Although we took a convenience sample we'll proceed with caution." For the success/failure, you have to do (np) and (nq) and both have to be bigger than 10--this should pass for everything except maybe the third question (pursue college); if it's not bigger than 10, same deal--we'll proceed with caution.

As for your paper, the first half should be talking about the sampling process. Really, you're just taking those first 3 questions on your worksheet and summing that up in essay format. Talk about what kind of sample you took, what your sample is as a whole (think about how the rest of your group chose people), and what kinds of bias there are. You probably won't name a specific type of bias, but talk about who's over/underrepresented and just think of different problems that would arise from the questions we have and the way we asked them.

Last, for the math part of your essay, you should write about the conditions--which were met, and which were not. Then, you want to interpret your confidence intervals, in context. Remember, in class we wrote some writing templates..."I am 90% confident that the true population proportion of students who work 16 or more hours per week lies between ____ and ____." You can also look in your textbook in chapter 19 and find the example they walk you through. For this piece, try not to just write the same boring sentence three times in a row. Also talk about if you think your estimates are correct and why/why not, or if the numbers seem logical/make sense.

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Here's an email response I had that may help...

Perfect...almost.

That's exactly how you find p-hat but you always use the decimal form of it.

So 21/122 = .172, and that's p-hat. So then for the formula, you'll have .172 +/- 1.645(square root((.172)(1-.172)/122).

To actually calculate it, use your calculator--STAT-->TESTS-->ONE PROP Z-INT. When the next screen pops up enter x (the number of successes, or in this case, number of kids who said "yes"), n (sample size), and the confidence level, as a decimal.

Confidence Interval Project!

Hey guys! Only a few more days of break left! Enjoy!

For all of you who still need to complete your project...

If you were absent, you'll need to find a friend and steal some data. If you ask someone who was in class, they should have data combined from their group--just steal these numbers of "yes" and "no" for each of the three questions, add in your data, and work with this.

No one should be working with a data set of only 30 students...can you think of why?

For the rest of you, a few hints...
  1. Remember that your p-hat is not a number of "yes", like "23." P-hat is a proportion or percentage, so to get this you'll have to take the number of "yes" divided by the sample size.
  2. Use the correct z* value! Look in the chart! Remember, we're using three different levels of confidence--90% for the first question/interval, 95% for the second, 99% for the third.
  3. Use the Stat--Tests--One Prop Z-Int function on your calculator to actually find the interval; this is a good way to check your work. (You still need to show the formula written out with the correct numbers substituted (plugged) in.
  4. Use your book/Baron's review guide! Look for confidence intervals for proportions and you'll find examples with all the math/interpretations.

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Not =]

No math problems tonight! You have two things to do for homework....

1.) Make sure you ask 30 people our 3 survey questions for our group project tomorrow! Remember, these must be EHHS students and ideally from all different age/ability groups.

2.) DON'T FORGET YOUR SATURDAY SESSION RSVP! I need these tomorrow! Homework grade! I need them even if you're not going!

Annnnnnnd.....if you didn't do your hw from Tuesday, make sure you do--I'm checking tomorrow!

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Wish for a *snow day* tomorrow!! =D

Hey guys! It's Zaiba [:

Lots of stuff today, better have paid attention and take in this confidence interval stuff. Does anyone need notes? If so, see me.

Homework for tonight: Page 446: 1, 5, 7, 11 and for #15: create as a 95% & 99.7% interval.

HAVE YOUR SATURDAY SESSION FORM IN BY TOMORROW!!!!
-of course there's a snow day tomorrow, then obviously due THURSDAY!!!

Break next week =)

Monday's HW! Quiz!

For homework tonight you need to complete the 3 MC questions handed out in class.

SHOW ALL OF YOUR WORK AND CHECK THE CONDITIONS FOR QUESTIONS 2,3!!!!

Also, remember to do some studying--quiz tomorrow! These 3 MC will serve as your first 3 quiz questions.

And lastly, don't forget to bring in your RSVP forms for the Saturday, March 6th session!

Super Bowl Sunday! (And some homework tips)

Yo yo! I hope everyone's got something exciting going on today for the big game. I just sent an email answering a couple questions about the homework, and thought it might be helpful for everyone, so check it out...

They (the problems) are a bit different, but that's b/c I want you to have some challenge! For the rainfall problem, if you're just talking about one year, you use the standard deviation given. However, once we start talking about 4 years (I think in c,d) you need to then use the new standard deviation formula for teh sampling distribution of means. That's the key to which formula you use--once you start taking more than one sample (year), you have to use the new formula. So 26 is a little bit of everything.

Yes, for both you should check the conditions and show your work written out.

For 36b, it's a flashback to probability. In A you found the probability that a bag is underweight--so for b, think about "ands" and "or's." We have 3 bags--so, "not underweight and...." Think about it.

Good luck!

Friday, February 5, 2010

Happy Friday!!

The weekend is here!!..finally =-)

Homework:
So since Superbowl 44 IS on Sunday.. .Mr. Carofano decreased the amount of homework to only #'s 26 + 36 on page 430 and the problem we were doing in class (if you didn't already hand it in). Both these assignments will be collected Monday and graded SO remember...
1.) conditions. check 'em
2.) graph it- normal model
3.) show all calculations
4.) answer the question ---> draw a conclusion..
Do it before Sunday!

*Permission slips for the Saturday Session are due WEDNESDAY!! Have it in!!

..Also keep in mind when you're picking your seminars for CAPT Week, the AP Statistics one is on Wednesday March 3rd. Be there...... or else ;)

Thursday, February 4, 2010

#31 HW Tip!

31A asks you to find the mean and standard deviation of test scores...how can we do this? If we just add up the scores 1-5 we're not considering how many students got each score. So, think of the score as your "value" and the percents are our "probability." So for mean and standard deviation, enter the score in L1, percent (as a decimal) in L2, and do the 1 Var Stat L1,L2.

Good luck!

Carofano's Back!

Few thangs....

Hey guys and gals! First off, I'm still here. I have not entirely abandoned the blog, nor will I ever...just got a lil' help now from my student assistant person....also known as Zaiba.

No homework tonight...just make sure last night's is done! We'll talk about it tomorrow...I'll check it off as a HW assignment, just check to make sure you tried it all.

AFTER SCHOOL REVIEW TOMORROW.

Also, there is now a sign-up book for extra help on my desk. Many students have complained that I am inaccessible due to the incredibly high number of people in here, always. So now, you sign up for some 1 on 1; of course you can't monopolize a whole week, and some days I'll have meetings and/or work to get done myself, but check it out.

If you want to come to my room during study/lunch to work, you may do just that. If you just want to hang out with friends, you can do that in the cafe. There's no need to be here. Don't take it personally, it's only fair to those kids who do need my help.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Helloooo guyss!! It's Zaiba : ]

*Hints on tonight's homework!! =)
  • For A, find distribution of Y - X means find the new mean (which is the expected value) and standard deviation.
  • For B, use a normal model based on your answer to A

REMEMBER!! Variances always add!!!!

:)

Another Extra Credit Opportunity... take it

Hey guys! It's Zaiba = )

So if you can't do the Bock Interview [Wednesday H period], here's a similar assignment that you can complete for extra credit:
It will be for the school newspaper! Only 1 will be picked but if your's doesn't get picked, that does not mean you will not receive extra credit. The topic is our Stats Saturday Session we just had!!

Basically, discuss what is was, who attended, where & when it took place, and why. Explain it from your point of view, your experience and how/why it was helpful to you as a Stats student.
--> Here are some stats from the session:
School attended: Bloomfield HS, Windsor HS, Windsor Locks HS, Plainville HS, Bulkeley HS (Hartford), New Britain HS and of course, ours truly, East Hartford HS.
Students Attended: 213 out of the 218 that said they would. Nice!
Teachers/Presenters from: Westhill in Stamford, Waterbury, RHAM in Hebron, and even a former student.. Andrew Jackwin's mother (Wendy Jackwin).
^Also included members from The College Board and AP Consultants.
*Good Luck and hand it in before the end of the semester (exam day)

==>Do the assigned worksheet for homework! (the one that was handed out when he wasn't here last Thursday).

-Also keep in mind that...
  • Make up work should be in!!!
  • The semester is almost ending.. so get your STAMPS together
  • Prepare questions for Bock!! Let's be ready for his visit.

= )
