Perfect Day for a Take Home Test!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is enjoying break! We'll be back at school before you know it.

I've definitely enjoyed my time off, but I'm also very much looking forward to seeing you all back at school. I'm ready for 8 days of probability, 2 Saturday Sessions (2 for me to attend, you only have 1), and then midterm exams! Woop woop!

Don't wait until the last day to do your take home test! I finished an extra detailed version of mine last night--I only have one set of papers to grade and I'm done with all my break homework. You should do the same to! Boo procrastinating!

Enjoy the snow. Be safe. Make a snowman or have a snowball fight!

See you soon!

Vacation!

We made it!

As you know, get an A on the take home test!

It's uploaded under our classroom resources if you need/prefer an electronic copy!

I look forward to seeing you all when you're back! For now, rest up, rejuvenate. and come back ready to learn. Enjoy your time with friends and family. Go outside and do something fun. Just take advantage of each moment you have.

As always, email with any questions. I'll post again later in the week with some stuff (including the homework for when we return if you want to get ahead).

It's good to be back...

Yay probability! Yay math problems! Yay less writing in Stats!

Tonight, please complete the probability problems we started in class. Remember, these will be graded as a classwork (that means it's worth way more than a usual homework!)

I've also uploaded the Take Home Exam. You can find it under our powerpoints and assignments. It's the first link under the "Assignments" tab, entitled "Collecting Data Take Home Exam (Holiday Break)." Enjoy!

Tomorrow we'll do some work with Venn Diagrams and then we'll enjoy our week off!

(Lot's of intense probability as soon as we're back...)

Happy Senior Trip!

I can't believe I'm out 2 days in a row...

I'll definitely be back tomorrow. Still feeling under the weather, but I'll be back for sure.

I'll have to watch the concert video; I'm really sorry I didn't make it, I just got sick for the first time at the wrong time.

I hope you all have a wonderful day today on the Senior trip! Looks like the weather is cooperating quite well! For the rest of you, enjoy your "personal day" off or your AP problems in class. Tomorrow, it's probability! Yay!

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

I miss you all!

Sorry I didn't make it in today--I'm not happy my perfect attendance goal has been ruined. I'm just feeling pretty under the weather.

I hope you all (well, those of you who are going) have a great time at the Senior trip tomorrow! I'm hoping to be back.

I'll see you soon! Make sure you work hard on those AP problems! I'll be grading them over vacation.

Weekend!

One more week 'til break! We can do this!

A little more experiments next week, then some probability.

For homework this weekend please complete the 2 AP problems provided in class:
2002 # 2
1999 # 3

I encourage you to try these on your own and check your answers online to make sure you know what's up!

See you all Monday!

Thursday!

Tonight, please complete the chapter 13 "Quiz A" worksheet provided in class.

DON'T FORGET MY SATURDAY SESSION FORM: DUE TOMORROW!
Enjoy!

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Wed nes day

Just a heads up, I've created 3 more pop quizzes like the one you took today. And you'll have all of them to start class before the senior trip....

Tonight, more experiments. Please complete the following in your textbooks:

page 314 17,25,29,35

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

Tuesday HW

Yay experiments!

I'm hoping we can finish up this chapter this week as it looks like we'll be having a take home test. That may be an unrealistic goal though.

Tonight, please complete page 313: 7,21,23,27 (for 7 there are lots questions to answer about this experiment...)

If you're feeling ambitions, tomorrow's homework will be page 314 17,25,29,35.

Enjoy!

Monday.;..

Not only Monday, but a rainy day. And a warm rainy day--what a waste of a comfortable temperature.

Anyway, enough negativity.

Tonight, please complete the following Free Response questions:
  • 2010 #1 part A
  • 2007 #2 parts a-c (Remember, blocking is the same idea as stratifying--so part c is asking how you will decide to group these dogs, by clinic or breed, and why)
Also, don't forget our Saturday Session permission slips are due Friday.

For those of you in need of stamps, here are 2 stamp problems--but they must be completed  for tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/11):

1. The average grade among 27 period E students is 79.59. The average for 19 period H students is 87.25, and the average for 22 period F students is 85.38. Find the average grade for all AP Stat students.

2. The grades for 20 period E students are shown below. Create a histogram of this data.
78, 96, 63, 87, 93, 66, 92, 92, 87, 83, 62, 91, 72, 85, 80, 79, 58, 87, 58, 65

Weekend Homework!

Study, study, study!

Vocab test is on Monday--20 words, none of which have two definitions... (40 points)

Then, we'll follow up with an AP Free Response as part of our test (15 points)

Hope you paid attention in class when we went over the 2011 problem! It wouldn't be a bad idea to look up the rubric online and use it to study. The free response in class has the following questions:

a. Describe a (cluster or stratified or systematic or simple random) sampling procedure.

b. Identify a variable you might stratify and WHY you chose this variable (explain how it relates to the response variable).

c. Explain the advantage of using a stratified sample over the method you described in a (so I guess part a isn't stratified...)

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Thusday HW (but it feels like a Friday...)

Those poll results are ridiculous.

Tonight, please complete the chapter 13 reading questions provided in class. For those of you who were absent (or lost them), I've provided the questions below.

Tomorrow we'll start off class by grading one another's bias question, and then we'll start our notes on chapter 13! Yay!

Don't forget, vocab test is Monday! (And another test question--a free-response question like the one we went over in class, too!)

Chapter 13 Reading Questions:
1. There are two types of observational studies—retrospective and prospective studies.

  • a. What is a retrospective observational study?
  • b. What is a prospective observational study?
2. In an experiment where does the random assignment occur?

3. Describe/comment on each of the four principles of experimental design:
  • a. Control:
  • b. Randomize:
  • c. Replicate:
  • d. Block:
4.Explain the meaning of “statistically significant.”

5. What is a control treatment/control group?

6. What does it mean for two variables to be confounded?

7. In your own words summarize the procedure for the tomato/fertilizer experiment on page 298 -300.

Happy hump day!

Halfway through the week, and halfway to being halfway to our holiday break. Or something like that.

Another light night for homework....

Please complete the 2011 AP free-response problem regarding the sampling of apartments (parts a and b).

I expect to see well thought, thorough answers--in context, and in detail!

If you provide a one sentence, half-hearted response for these you will not receive homework. credit.

By the way, I recently joined One Direction...

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

One more night of simulations...

Tonight, please work on the following:

Page 268: 24 (10 trials), 29 (5 trials), 33 (10 trials)

For each scenario, please...

1. Write a procedure
2. Conduct trials (use your graphing calculator)
3. Write a conclusion!

Enjoy!

We'll have our in class simulation quiz once I return your take home quizzes--I want you to have a chance to see what you did right/wrong to study!

Monday, November 26, 2012

Back to work...

Tonight, please complete the (other 2) simulations provided in class (on the powerpoint slide handout).

Tomorrow we'll see how our answers match up against the group's suggestions to check our homework!

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Thanksgiving HW

So the Thanksgiving take home quiz is due Monday (and uploaded under our resources and assignments)...

Here's the writing template for some procedure help...
1. Generate ___ digit random integers from ____ to ____.
2. Let _____ represent _____.... (define what numbers represent which categories)
3. Generate random integers until (provide a stopping rule!)
4. Record.... (what data should I record from my simulation?)
5. Repeat. Conduct ____ trials

And here are some HINTS:
  • If you use numbers 01-50 you will have to ignore any numbers over 50; therefore, I recommend you either use 0-9 or 00-99
  • To do that, many of you like percentages...
    • Well, 5 people out of 50 win $200 so that's 5/50 or 10%.
    • 15 people out of 50, or 30% win $100....
    • And so on....
    • Now you have percentages which will make your breakdowns easier!
  • Also, this contest is done without replacement. That means once you use a number, it's out (for instance, if you draw a "3", then you cannot have another person win with a "3")

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Thanksgiving! (Already?!)

Tis the time to give thanks...and if you're in a lot of AP classes, probably do a lot of homework. I did my part and gave you all some multiple choice and a simulation to enjoy!

So, for break, please complete the take home quiz--the simulation regarding blood type, as well as the multiple choice. I've uploaded these under our classroom resources in case you lost them.

Other than that, enjoy your time off. Maybe some Black Friday shopping? I still need NBA2K13 for my Xbox...

See you all Monday! Come back well rested and ready for a simulations quiz the week of our return!

And as always, feel free to email with any questions. fred.carofano@gmail.com.

Monday, November 19, 2012

Monday HW

One more day of class and our week is done!

Tonight, please do your best to complete the chapter 11 quiz C worksheet provided in class--don't just say you couldn't figure it out! You only have a little homework, so give it your best effort!

Hint: Since we (again) have percentages, I'd recommend generating numbers (well, reading them from below) from 00 to 99.

Here are some generic steps you might use to write your procedure....

1. Generate ___ digit random integers from ____ to ____.

2. Let _____ represent _____....   (define what numbers represent which categories)

3. Generate random integers until (provide a stopping rule!)

4. Record.... (what data should I record from my simulation?)

5. Repeat. Conduct ____ trials.

Weekend Homework

This weekend please complete the chapter 11 reading questions provided in class!

Be ready for some notes and a new unit when we return! You'll have a take home simulation over Thanksgiving so we have to make sure we're on top of things!

Jamel--here are the questions since you probably lost yours.

Chapter 11 Reading Questions:1. What does it mean for something to be random? (statistically speaking)
2. What are pseudorandom numbers?
3. What is a simulation?
4. What is a component?
5. Define a trial.
6. Define response variable.
7. Describe the 7 steps for creating a simulation (outlined at the bottom of page 260).
8. Write the steps you will follow on your calculator to generate random integers (yellow box on page 263!)

Complete page 266: 1,3, 4 (questions listed below):
1. Is a coin flip random? Why or why not, in your opinion?
3. Many states run lotteries, giving away millions of dollars if you match a certain set of winning numbers. How are those numbers determined? Do you think this method guarantees randomness? Why or why not?
4. Many kinds of games people play rely on randomness. What are (at least) 3 different ways commonly used to achieve randomness? In other words, pretend you’re trying to choose who will drive to the movies amongst 5 friends. What are at least 3 different ways you can randomly choose a driver?

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Vocab Test Tomorrow!

Study, study, study! (for your vocab test).

Remember, you get 2 extra points for the crossword puzzle (due tomorrow)!

Good luck!

**I added 3 words that are not on the vocab list...**

1. Residual Plot
2. Underestimate
3. Overestimate

Wednesday

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook (regarding re-expression):

Page 238

1, 3, 7, 31 (#7 has a lot of words but it's only asking you to use a formula; don't get scared!)

Also, you have a 10-minute pop quiz tomorrow--interpret slope, intercept, coefficient of determination (R^2), and correlation (r). All of the numbers are provided, you'll only be writing. Make sure you know what you're doing so you have time to finish!

*Hint: the quiz is based on the same data as last night's homework--so you can practice these questions ahead of time!

And also, remember our vocab test is Friday. The list is uploaded under our classroom resources link.

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Twosday

Tonight, please complete the regression problems provided in class. These explore some of what we've learned, as well as extrapolation, influence, and leverage. Enjoy!

Tomorrow we'll talk about any questions you might have and begin chapter 10.

Remember, your vocab test is Friday! I've uploaded the vocab list as well as tonight's homework.

Friday, November 9, 2012

Weekend HW! Yay!

This weekend please complete the following:

Page 215: 10, 11, 13, 15

Enjoy your three day weekend! (We pretty much don't go to school anymore...)

Thursday, November 8, 2012

*Take Home Quiz Still Due Tomorrow*

Despite the snow day, your take home quiz is still due tomorrow. You're on your own--you have plenty of notes and I have confidence in you!

Do your best! Get off to a good start for the second quarter!

See you manana!

Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Wednesday HW

Please complete for Friday:

1.) Take home quiz! (please do a through h on separate paper)

2.) Test score analysis (a little old school Stat)

Both of these will be graded!

(Sorry Monique--I'm not going to post the weekend homework b/c I'm not exactly sure where we'll be on Friday!)

Monday, November 5, 2012

I'm so excited...I just can't hide it!

Ok, so I'm only done grading the multiple choice section (36 of the 51 points)....but I couldn't resist a little update. The following people got me super excited by earning a 36 out of 36 on the multiple choice:

Monique Atkinson
Ashley Clancy
Matt Whitesell
Cindy Tran

And the following ladies weren't slackers with a 35/36:

Christina Thomas
Micaela Levesque

I'm so proud of you all! Just wanted to give you some good news to help enjoy the day off.

Let's get that facebook group active again!

Don't worry--there were plenty of good grades and people to be proud of. I'll get back to you when I finish grading!

Don't forget your homework--the questions provided in class and uploaded under our resources (see post below). This will count as a double homework so don't forget!

It's the most wonderful time of the year....(for Stats...)

There will be lots of Statistics (and statistics) to pay attention to over the next couple days with Tuesday being election day! Keep your eyes and ears open for some interesting info! We'll be doing some of the math the pollsters use to determine sample sizes and margin of error later in the year!

As for homework, please complete the questions provided in class--these include what we began Friday, as well as some chapter 9 reading questions.
  • There is no need to re-write answers from Friday's worksheet--just staple these together and finish the rest
  • Use your textbook (chapter 9) to complete each of the reading questions.
This is our first homework grade for the second quarter--so it's going to count extra! Get started on the right foot!

On Wednesday we will continue to discuss outliers, influence, and leverage.

Enjoy your day off!

(If you lost the questions I've attached this under our Classroom Resources, below assignments--"Chapter 9 Intro Questions."

Friday, November 2, 2012

Weekend!

After a short week it's already Friday...your homework this weekend is to STUDY FOR THE TEST! Remember, the test includes 12 multiple choice and 1 free response question. You will have the entire period (and if you finish early I'll give you some homework to start...)

Also, STAMPS ARE DUE MONDAY. Here's the deal for stamps....
  • They must be collected and stapled/paperclipped together.
  • The total number of stamps must be clearly written on the front (or I'll just assume you only have 1....)
  • Double check your count! If your count is off (at all) when I double check you will be given a "0." No lieing (or counting wrong!)
  • Not sure if it counts? Anything that is literally a stamp counts...
And finally, the answers to the few practice questions for the test are below...

1. According to the this data, each year the predicted average life expectancy in the U.S. increases by approximately 0.2157 years.

2. According to the model, in the year "0" the predicted average life expectancy was -353.87 years. This is unrealistic--life expectancy cannot be negative, nor should we consider the U.S. in year "0."

3. This R^2 tells us that 95.39% of the changes in life expectancy are due to changes in the year. Other factors may include advancement in medicine/science or the economic status of the U.S.

4. r = sqroot(0.9539) = 0.977

5. Residual = actual - predicted = 77.9 - 79.0399 = -1.1399 (I got the predicted value by substituting 2007 in the Least Squares Regression Line equation)

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Thursday...

We will have a test Monday on chapters 7 and 8. Sweeeeeeet.

Tonight, please complete the AP Stat Quiz: Linear Regression worksheet provided in class. Again, this is not a quiz, but a homework to prepare for our upcoming test.

See ya'll tomorrow before the weekend!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Back to work...

Glad you're back!

Tomorrow I will announce the day of our test--either Friday or Monday. Please vote! (top left of the page).

We'll do some more practice stuff tomorrow (Thursday), and then learn some new/additional regression stuff Friday (if we do not have our test).

Tonight, please complete the following:

Period E:     page 213: 1, 7, 9

Period F,H: page 213: 1, 7 and finish our multiple choice (provided in class)

Enjoy!

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Back to school tomorrow!

You know I'm going to check your homework after that much time away from school...

The end of the first marking period has been moved to next Wednesday. Therefore, we will have one final test toward the first quarter grade. Yay!

Monday, October 29, 2012

Stay safe!

Good morning!

Hope you're all ready for some serious wind and rain!

We will not have a test Wednesday as a result of today/tomorrow being cancelled. Hopefully we all keep our power and are back at school Weds! When we return we'll practice chapter 8 some more (for about 2 days) and then we will have a test, most likely the first grade of our third quarter.

I look forward to seeing you all soon! Enjoy being stormed-in!

(If you do lose power, this might be the perfect opportunity to read some chapter 8/do some studying, or maybe even read chapter 9 to get ahead...just sayin...)

Friday, October 26, 2012

It's the weekend!

Can you believe we're almost done with October? Halloween is only a few days away....

Please complete the following this weekend:

Page 190: 14, 23, 31ef, 33, 47

On Monday and Tuesday we'll practice some linear regression (and do some AP problems); then, we will enjoy our.....

**Test on chapter 7 and 8 on Wednesday!** (After school test review on Monday).

This will be our last grade of the quarter. Yay!

Thursday, October 25, 2012

Thursday homework....

I hope you're all enjoying your extended afternoon!

Tonight, please complete the worksheet provided in class (ps...this is not a 26 point quiz, just a homework grade...). Remember to skip E!

Some more info....
  • Crossword puzzles (for extra credit on the test) are due tomorrow!
  • We will have a TEST next week (WEDS or THURS)!
The answer to number 2a is.......y(hat) = 56 + 2.4x

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

I can't believe I forgot to post yesterday...

Broke my streak of posts. I'm sorry!

Tonight, enjoy some Algebra....writing linear equations, interpreting slope, y-intercept.....yay!

Page 189:
1, 15a, 21, 27, 49

Quiz tomorrow--5 min! "Is a linear model appropriate?" and "Find the equation of the LSRL using your calculator." After grading/stamping your stamp problems from today, here are a few pointers....
  • Remember you're looking for random scatter in the RESIDUAL plot, not the scatter plot
  • When you explain your reasoning, make sure you say there is/isn't a pattern in the RESIDUAL plot. Be specific.
  • Draw the residual plot!
  • Don't forget the other two conditions!
    • Look at the scatter plot (L1 vs. L2 most likely) for outliers.
    • Don't just say "the variables are quantitative." You have to tell me what the variables are!
Also, I started working on #1 with some people after school....it's really just a ton of Algebra. Maybe this will help?

Monday, October 22, 2012

Monnnnnnday HW

It's so nice out--stats homework outside!

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook (sorry to be picky about which parts, just saving you some stress...)

Page 189: 3, 7, 31a-d, 35acdg, 39ab

If you were absent recently please be sure to make up the quiz from Friday.   Crossword puzzles are due on Friday!

Friday, October 19, 2012

Weekend Homework!

What's better for a rainy day than some AP Stat free-reponse problems?

This weekend please complete the following problems (provided in class):

2011 #1 (problem about z-scores--weight lifting and running)

1998 #2 (another histogram from a scatter plot!)

These will be checked as homework, not collected and graded. We WILL NOT go over them in class--it is your resonsibility to look up/check your answers online! If you follow the link below, choose the "scoring guidelines" for the appropriate year to find the answer key and grading rubric. (Or, just google it...)

http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_information/8357.html

Then, of course, if you have questions we can talk about them.

Back to chapter 8 Monday!

Thursday, October 18, 2012

Thursday HW

Chapter 7 quiz tomorrow! You'll only have about 12 minutes, so make sure you know what you're doing! Scroll down to yesterday's post for a breakdown of the quiz. After the quiz we'll begin chapter 8 and start to explore residual plots.

Tonight, please complete the "Chapter 7 Quiz C" worksheet provided in class. (This will not be graded as a quiz, just as homework).

See you all tomorrow!

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Wednesday!

Tonight, please complete the following (from your textbook):

page 162: 13, 21, 23, 25, 29, 31

Enjoy!

*The crossword puzzles (extra credit on the test grade) are due by next Friday, 10/26*

Check out the new poll question--it made my brain melt.

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Tuesday Oct 16.....

Thought you might enjoy this artwork that was left for me after our discussion of # of cats and your chances of being struck by lightning...(I think that's me?)

Tonight, please complete the following:

Page 160: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 15 (find correlation on your calculator)
*If you'll be attending our AP Seminar tomorrow please don't do this! Save it for the seminar! (We can also go over any mistakes on your Unit 1 test and answer any old questions you may have...)*

See you manana!

Monday, October 15, 2012

Monday HW

New unit! Yay!

Tonight, please complete the following (period E--I added 2 questions for you to do!)

1. Chapter 7 reading questions (using our notes and your textbook)
2. Page 160: 1,3

The chapter 7 questions are listed below (in case you forgot):
1. What are explanatory and response variables? Explain in your own words.

2. Sketch a scatterplot with a…
     a. Strong negative association
     b. weak positive association
     c. correlation = 1
3. What does correlation measure? Be specific.
4. What types of variable(s) are shown on a scatterplot—categorical or quantitative?
5. What are the three conditions we must check before investigating correlations?
6. In describing an association, what are three features we must address?
7. What is the goal of re-expressing a scatterplot?
8. What happens to a scatterplot if we standardize all x and y values?

Friday, October 12, 2012

Take Home Test!

Hopefully you're all feeling confident after today's exam. I'm looking forward to examining the grade data and evaluating our performance for the first unit!

This weekend you have you last "Unit 1" assignment--to complete the 15 multiple choice take home test provided in class. If you lost it or need one (Brandon!) I've uploaded it under our classroom resources. Look in the "Assignments" section (scroll down) to find "Unit 1 Take Home MC Test."

On Monday we'll begin our next unit, bivariate data. If you're feeling ambitious and would like to get ahead, take a look at chapter 7. I'm pretty pumped to get into it.

Enjoy your weekend! See you Monday!

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Tomorrow's the big day....

STUDY. Then, STUDY MORE. Then, study some Chem for your quiz, too.

Tomorrow will be a nice opportunity for you to test you're learning to this point in AP Stats. I'm looking forward to seeing the results, and of course wish you all the best of luck (but you won't need luck if you study).

*If you go to the classroom resources/powerpoints and scroll to the bottom you can find a list of topics to study for tomorrow's test (Unit One Exam Topics)*

Here are a few more tidbits about tomorrow's exam:
  • You do not have to create any graphical displays by hand or on your calculator. All questions based on graphical analysis come with the graphs provided.
  • The Normal model question is similar to the "Storms" problem we did in class (remember, Minor, Kinda, and Super storms?)
    • And don't forget invnorm() problems. You need to know how to find the cutoff for the "top 20%", for instance.
  • Study your boxplot quiz we had--tomorrow you'll have to compare two boxplots
  • Make sure you know how to determine outliers!
  • Make sure you know the relationship between the mean and median dependent upon shape (in class we folded a paper into three columns and took some notes on this topic--study this!)
  • Independence--know what it is! The test question is just like #20 from our recent homework (p. 131)
See you manana! (pretend there's a tilde over that first n).

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Rest-of-Week Homework

Over the next two days your job is to prepare for Friday's test!

To do so, please complete (for Friday):

VOCAB TEST TOMORROW!

First off, just skimmed through the AP Stat facebook group, and I'm loving it. It seems like it can be a great resource, everybody should be in there. I love seeing people answering and asking questions, etc. Fantasticness. #davidw.samantham.pauld.jamell.xavierc.kevinh.jacobc.cindyt.

As for your vocab test...here are some more specifics for tomorrow.

1. This is a test of responsibility as much as it is statistical content. It is of the utmost importance that you study hard and start off with a successful first test. If you have any questions throughout the day (regarding definitions), email me at fred.carofano@gmail.com. I'll be out all day so I won't have access to my school email, but these will find me via smartphone.

2. There are 21 words to match. Four words have two definitions. These four words are: outlier, standard deviation, interquartile range, and Normal model.

3. Then, you have to name at least 3 displays for categorical data, 4 for quantitative data, and draw three distributions with a given shape.

4. Make sure you know about shifting and rescaling!

5. Brush up on what a contingency table is!

6. Study the difference between a parameter and a statistic.

7. To identify skewed vs. symmetric distributions, you must know how the mean and median relate!

  • Skewed Left: mean < median (because the mean is pulled toward the unusual, low values in the tail)
  • Skewed Right: mean > median (the mean, in this case, is pulled higher, toward the tail)
  • Symmetric: mean = median (well, they'll be close to equal. Here, the high and low numbers "balance out," and the mean is not impacted in either direction)
8. Make sure you know the relationship between standard deviation and variance.

Thursday HW

Please complete the IQ worksheet provided in class. Remember, this will be collected and graded (12 points in your AP problem category!).

If you lost the questions, here you go!

1. IQ can be modeled by the following: N(100,15). Use this model to answer the questions below.

a. Sketch a Normal distribution for IQ scores, and label the 68/95/99.7 rule on your picture.
b. Interpret the meaning of this rule, in context, in complete sentences.
c. Approximately what percent of people have IQ’s above 85?
d. Approximately what percent of people have IQ’s between 70 and 145?
e. Approximately what percent of people have IQ’s below 130?
f. Some consider those with IQ’s of 140 or above to be considered “genius.” Approximately what percent of people have an IQ considered to be “genius?”
g. Former President George W. Bush has an approximate IQ of 125. What percent of people would be considered less intelligent?
h. On the other hand, former President Ronald Reagan only had an IQ of approximately 105. What percent of people would be considered more intelligent?
i. Those with IQ’s between 115 and 124 are considered “above average,” or likely of university-student ability. Find the percent of category who fall into this specific interval.
j. What IQ cuts off the top 20% of IQ’s?
k. What IQ marks the 75th percentile?
l. What IQ score cuts off the most intelligent 5% of individuals?

Period H:
I (unfortunately) will not see you tomorrow...enjoy the pep rally!

*Your IQ problems are STILL DUE TOMORROW! You have to drop them off before the end of the day!
*You will also have to complete the AP multiple choice questions provided for Tuesday; we'll be working through these in class (periods E,F) on Friday. You're welcome to stop by if you have a free period!
*I also have a lecture hall study during period G if you want to come for some helP!

The Weekend!

It's that time again....hopefully the rain holds off because there's nothing better than some AP Stats, outside, in fall.

I think someone should create an AP Stat 2012-2013 facebook group--might be a nice way to get homework, bounce ideas around, etc. Maybe some extra credit for the administrator and those who participate?

Happy Birthday Tedisha (today)! And Monica (like a year ago)!

This weekend, please complete the 16 multiple choice (review) questions. Remember, all answers and work must be shown on the answer sheet to receive credit! This is worth twice as much as an open ended AP problem, so don't forget!

For the 8 or so who were absent, I fully expect you to complete this multiple choice. You can find this under the classroom powerpoints and assignments link. Scroll down to assignments and select "Chapter 1 - 5 Multiple Choice."
.
Also, if you'd like to get ahead, Monday's homework is listed below:

STUDY STUDY STUDY!

So, you're homework is to STUDY!

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

When's Day

Tonight, please complete the chapter 6 reading questions (provided in class). Make sure your answers are neat, organized, and clear!

If you forgot/lost/don't have the handout, each of the (9) questions are provided below:

Use your textbook to answer each of the questions (from chapter 6!) below:

1.) What does a z-score, or standardized score, measure?

2.) What is shifting data? And how does it affect measures of position (max, min, mean, median, etc.) and spread (range, IQR, standard deviation)?

3.) What does it mean to rescale data? How does rescaling affect measures of position and spread?

4.) Calculate the z-score for a student who scored 91 on an exam, if the class had an average of 87 and a standard deviation of 1.8. (Use the step-by-step example on page 107 as a guide).

5.) To apply a Normal model what shape must our distribution be? Describe the shape in words, and provide a picture.

6.) The standard Normal model has a mean of _________ and a standard deviation of _________.

7.) What does the Empirical, or 68/95/99.7 rule tell us? Explain in words (p. 109!).

8.) If a distribution is normal, what shape does a Normal probability plot show?
9.) What is a statistic?

And remember, quiz Friday!

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

2's Day....

Last homework from chapter 5! Woop woop!

Please complete page 96:

33b-d (I should see 3 boxplots!)
37
41 (I expect AT LEAST 5 complete sentences!)

• QUIZ FRIDAY!

  • This has been moved, yet again, so that those in need of help can come after school for more practice on Wednesday or Thursday!
  • Comparing Boxplots: You will not be given the entire data set—only some values below Q1, Q1, the median, Q3, and some values above Q3—so you must make the boxplot by hand! (You can’t use your calculator!)
  • Chapter 5, Quiz C! So you should study chapter 5, quiz A!....
    • Determine shape from the 5 number summary
    • Determine if there are outliers from the 5 number summary
    • Reading boxplots…

Monday, September 24, 2012

Monday HW

Tonight, please complete the following:

Page 94: 21, 27, 31, 35

Also, please complete questions 1-3 on the San Fran vs. St. Louis handout. We'll use this as the basis for our discussion in comparing boxplots tomorrow!   And tomorrow you'll have a quick (5 question) matching quiz!

Friday, September 21, 2012

Weekend HW (Sorry...)

This year is flying by--progress reports are already coming out (well, in 2 weeks!)

This weekend, continue to enjoy the beautiful weather. While you're outside, please complete the remaining 9 multiple choice questions (you did 1-3 already)--this will be collected and graded on Monday.

If you'd like to get ahead (since you have so little homework), Monday's homework is listed below.
Monday HW:
Page 94: 21, 27, 31, 35

On Monday we'll get into the group work (that I wanted to do today :( ), practice wtih comparing histograms/boxplots a little, and wrap up as we move into chapter 6. Yay!

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Thursday Homework (Go GMen!)

Almost done with another week!

Tonight, please complete:

page 91: 9 (but don't check by hand!), 13, 19, 24, 29

Answers to 24:
a.) April
b.) February
c.) August
d.) Both distributions of ozone level for January and June appear to be fairly symmetric; there were two years with ozone levels consider outliers in June, but no outliers in January. The median ozone level for January is slightly less than that of June. Ozone levels in January were much more variable, as it had both a higher range and higher interquartile range (IQR)--in other words, ozone levels in June were more consistent.

e.) Median ozone levels generally increase from January to APril, then decrease from April through October, before again rising again from October to January to April--it appears this is a cycle (in changes in ozone level). The ozone levels are more variable (spread out) in the winder months, and increase in consistency ffrom March Through August (as the interquartile ranges and ranges generally decrease over this time).

And just a heads up--tomorrow you'll have another multiple choice (pop!) quiz, but this time on your own--so do an extra-nice job on tonight's homework! The questions are more difficult than the first three, and are generally about boxplots and other types of quantitative displays (dotplots, histograms, stemplots).   After that we'll do a couple things in groups--lots of graded work tomorrow!

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Wednesday!

For those of you who spent the day at the Big E, I hope you had a fantastic time! It looks like the weather quickly turned around to provide you all with a beautiful day!

As for the rest of us (stuck in school), the homework for tonight is to complete our boxplot practice! (the yellow paper we started in class).

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Tuesday HW

Tonight please complete #'s 1-3 (completely) on the Quiz A--Chapter 5 worksheet provided in class.

Here are a few tips:

1a. If you need help with the histogram (by hand and on your calculator), use the TI Tips in the yellow box in your textbook (for calculator help!) Histograms are in chapter 4.

1d. Look at the shape of the histogram! If it's skewed, we use median and IQR. If symmetric, we prefer the mean and standard deviation.

2a...Think!

2b. Calculate the "fences" we discussed today in class to find the boundaries for outliers.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Monday HW

Back to the grind...

Tonight, please complete:

Page 91: 3 (use your calculator to find the 1 Var Stats!), 5, 7, and 17a

Friday, September 14, 2012

Weekend HW

Please complete the 2 AP problems provided in class.

We'll talk about these a bit in class Monday; please take the time to work through these--then, check out your answers online to see how you did!

Enjoy the weekend weather. I'm excited to get back to work Monday!

Thursday, September 13, 2012

Thursday HW (and the weekend's almost here...)

Tonight, please complete the 12 multiple choice questions provided in class (regarding graphical displays). These should help us think about graphs of quantitative data as we prepare for our quiz tomorrow!
*Please make sure your answers are recorded on the answer sheet provided.

This will be collected and graded as an AP Problem/Classwork grade, so do a good job!

***We have not discussed number 6, so don't stress--we'll worry about it together in class!***
Remember, your quiz is two questions over 12 minutes--create a histogram and then describe the distribution. Good luck!

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Wednesday HW

Please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 66: 13, 15, 21, 23

Remember, we'll have a quiz Friday! It'll be short (maybe 12 minutes?). You'll have to create a histogram, and then of course, describe the distribution.

Also, be ready for a surprise (but not anymore) AP problem with your group! Yesssss!

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Tuesday HW

Tonight, please complete the following:

Page 65: 3,5,7,9 and use the data in #12 to make a histogram (do not do parts a-d, just make a histogram of the data)!

Enjoy!

**I strongly encourage you to use your calculator to make a histogram for #12, then simply transfer this information from your screen to your paper. If you need a refresher on how, check out the TI Tips on page 54). Or, follow this link...

Please complete the (chapter 3) take home quiz provided in class for Monday. Don't forget! This is your first quiz grade! Any late papers will be docked points, and none will be accepted after Wednesday. (You lose 5 points each day).

***I don't feel comfortable counting the independence question as part of your homework--I think we need some more practice. Therefore, the 2 sided paper will be collected (it's your quiz). We'll go over the independence question (regarding exercise and gender) Monday in class.***

If you can't find yours or prefer an electronic version, I've uploaded the quiz. Just click the "Powerpoints and Assignments" link, scroll down to the "Assignments" section, and it's titled "Chapter 3 Take Home Quiz."

And of course, don't forget to enjoy your weekend! It's our first five day week next week! We'll be getting into explorations of quantitative data, so I'm about to get even more excited.

See you Monday!

Brittany W.--hopefully you have the best weekend of all! Happy birthday!

Monday, September 3, 2012

Here's an email I just sent to one of your peers regarding your homework--maybe it'll help recap what we talked about in class.

Also, I've uploaded a pdf file of the homework, just in case you can't find yours.

You have two jobs for each of the circled scenarios. First, identify the variables that were recorded and whether you think they're quantitative (a measurement of some type, with units) or categorical (results separated into groups/categories). Then, try to identify the context:

Who is the study about? (Who (or what) provided the data/information?)
What is being recorded? (This will be the same as your variables list, no need to write this twice)
Where is this study done? And when?
Why is this information being collected?
How is it being collected?

We did talk about this some in class, so just do your best. We'll be discussing our responses tomorrow in class. I can't wait!

Enjoy the rest of your labor day!

Friday, August 31, 2012

Labor Day Weekend (HW)

First off, enjoy your three day weekend and come back prepared to get intense on Tuesday. We'll get right into our notes and start investigating categorical data.

Tonight, please complete:

See you manana!

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

First Day!

It's finally here! Tomorrow's the big day!
Come ready to learn--we'll start with some discussion of what statistics is all about, and immediately get into some content.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Monday, August 20, 2012

It's Almost Time!

Hello, hello! Are you ready? I know I am. It's been a fun, relaxing, and rejuvenating summer on my end, and I hope on yours as well. I'm looking forward to hitting the ground running on the first day of school with some statistical analysis--so come prepared!

For those of you who may not know, this course will require a graphing calculator. We'll talk more the first days of school, but you will in fact NEED one. Some of the topics we'll address are literally impossible to complete in time on the AP Exam without one (TI83 or 84).

If you have any questions, concerns, ideas, or want to say hello, email me! (fred.carofano@gmail.com).

Actually, if you email me with a good question prior to the first day of school I'll start you off with a few extra credit points! (Just for being so on top of your game).

I look forward to meeting each of you and beginning the road to the AP exam.

Enjoy your last few days of summer!

Thursday, July 5, 2012

AP Scores Are In!

Hope you're all enjoying the start to summer!

Congratulations! Scores are in, and this (34) is the most qualifying scores earned by on group on the AP Stat exam! Special congrats to the 10 people who earned 5's!

Great work this year!

(If for some reason you don't have your score yet and can't wait, just shoot me an email and I can respond with your Stats score).

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Letter to Incoming Students...

This is one of the final few posts for the class of 2012! :(

Remember, your letter to incoming students is due Monday, June 11. This letter should be 1 full page (minimum) typed, with 1 inch margins (standard), size 12 font, and double spaced. The FCA's are listed below:

1. Reference at least 4 points/details/facts about the course content (what we study, level of interest, difficulty). Be specific. (8 points)

2. Reference at least 4 points/details/facts/opinions about "AP" (pace, homework, the exam, is it worth it? college credits, etc.) (8 points)

3. Reference at least 4 "other" facts (about teacher, using graphing calculators/Smartboard, book, anything else you think of). (8 points)

This will serve as a 24 point quiz grade--make sure you meet all of the FCA requirements! Proofread!

When you've completed this you can either bring me a hard copy or email me at fred.carofano@gmail.com.

Monday, May 21, 2012

Stamps, Books, and Such

Please don't forget--get in your stamps and textbooks as soon as possible! Only a few more weeks until exams!

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

We made it!

The exam has come and gone....and I have to say, I'm incredibly proud of all of you. So many people came the past two days during study halls, lunches, other classes, and after school to prepare themselves for the exam. I told you that all I wanted was your best effort, and it appears you all gave just that. It has been an honor and a privilege enjoying this long, statistically-challenging year and I very much look forward to enjoying the last few months with you all.

Collectively, you are the primary reason I've enjoyed coming to school each and every day (I've only missed 2!), and I thank you. I hope that you enjoyed class to date as much as I have.

We'll tackle some interesting mathematical and statistical ideas over the next month and a half--and I'm open to suggestions. I know many people want to learn about card counting, but feel free to offer any other potential concepts for us to discuss.

And finally, make sure you're as proud of you as I am. I'll take you all in an AP Stat competition against any other school on any given day.

:)

April Break Update

Hope you're all enjoying your time off! And hopefully you've made some progress on the take home test (which can be found under the classroom resources if you need it, see post below).

I've gotten all my grades up to date and uploaded the fourth quarter grades under our classroom resources. It's just above the powerpoints, along with your take home test. It's a good idea to take a look at this and make sure you get any missing assignments in. We'll have a busy few weeks when we're back, so get a head start now.

Keep enjoying the weather and start studying for your AP exams!

Thursday, April 12, 2012

Thursday/April Break HW

Ok, so here's the breakdown:

Thursday HW: Please complete Ch. 24 Quiz C and Ch. 25 Quiz A for homework. We will review this tomorrow in preparation for the take home test.

April Break HW: Please complete the take home test! For each day you are late you will lose 10 points (and it's worth 70, so get it in on Monday!) I've uploaded this under our resources entitled Inference for Means Take Home Test (April Break).

For those of you heading to Florida, enjoy! I hope you have a wonderful time and come back refreshed and ready for the home stretch to the AP exam. I know you have lots to do--but you have plenty of opportunity to squeeze in this test (plane, maybe?), so get it done!

For the rest of us, if you have time it'd be a great idea to start reviewing for the AP exam. Your success on this test will really come down to your willingness to work outside classroom. We can only do so much in our allotted time here; it's up to you to address your weaknesses, review, and be ready on May 16th.

I hope you all have a fantastic week and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Get ready--it's going to be super intense from Monday through May 16th!

Page 541: 1, 3, 10, 13, 17, 19

Also, you will have approximately 7-8 minutes to complete your test on Monday. I'm sorry--I know it's not ideal to have a weekend in between, but that just gives you ample time to check your notes and get your grade up.

I will, however, grade the multiple choice this weekend; you can use your extra time for the free response.

After you've finished your test on Monday we'll get back to chapter 23--T tests and T intervals.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Tuesday HW

Please complete the three problems on the powerpoint slides provided in class.

It looks like a lot of people forgot to grab this--so it's uploaded under our classroom resources entitled "3/20 homework."

In addition, study for tomorrow's AP problem! Make sure you can:

To those of you who were absent--I've uploaded the chapter 20 reading quiz and our chapter 19/20 multiple choice (most of us did this on Wednesday in class) under our resources. If you do not take it upon yourself to get the reading quiz completed for Monday it will be due Tuesday with no exceptions.

Also to the absent students--today we discussed Type I and Type II errors. The three book problems above address these ideas. It is your responsibility to (try to) learn this content to keep pace with the class.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Please complete the multiple choice take home quiz provided in class (16 questions, 16 points). This will be collected and graded on Monday.

I apologize for the inconvenience, but here are the modifications I noted in class:

**Skip numbers 4 and 5

**For number 9, use a 95% confidence level (A poll is done to estimate the proportion of adult Americans who like their jobs...)

**For number 15 you will need to use the TInverval function (under STAT-->TESTS) to find this answer. You want to choose "Stats" (we don't have any data).

Take home quiz due tomorrow!

This CAPT schedule is really throwing off my blog-updating routine.

Your take home quiz (regarding the proportion of students who say they've cheated on tests at least once) is DUE TOMORROW!

On Thursday (in the CAPT seminar) we'll continue working through some Investigative Tasks and our mock multiple choice exam.

Also, I'll be after school Thursday to review confidence intervals for proportions--with a mini-test Friday!

Friday, March 2, 2012

It's Friday! And more Stats tomorrow!

I'm looking forward to our second of three Saturday review sessions tomorrow!

For homework this weekend please complete the following in your textbooks:

*For those who do not attend this homework will be checked on Monday.

And don't forget...
CAPT week starts Monday. Remember we have AP Statistics review sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Anyone who is not testing is expected to attend. You will spend half of each session working on a practice multiple choice exam (to count as a grade); for the other half we will introduce and discuss the "Investigative Task" portion of the AP Exam.

This weekend you have a variety of (potential) responsibilities.

1. Please complete the Chapter 18 Guided Reading Questions for Tuesday. These will be collected and graded! Because we will begin discussing these answers in class, NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

2. If you were absent yesterday, please complete the probability question regarding two Antibiotic plans, I and II. (Hint: use a tree diagram to model each separate plan!)

3. If you would like to earn 1 point per incorrect question on QUIZ C (we took this last Wednesday) use the answer key (provided in class) to do the following:

In complete sentences, explain WHAT you did incorrectly and WHY this is incorrect. You will receive 1 point (toward your quiz grade) for each acceptable explanation. The more thorough you are, the more likely you earn this point back.

GMen! And Monday's HW...

They did it! The Giants were 7-7 this season--totally average. They then got hot and won 6 straight games to become champions..what's that mean? No matter where we're at now, if we go "all in," work hard for the next few months (up to May 16th), and stay focused, we can have the same kind of success on the AP exam.

Tonight's homework:

Page 382:. 34, 37 AND probability take home quiz #2 (provided in class--don't forget to do the back!

WE WILL HAVE A QUIZ ON CHAPTER 16 WEDNESDAY!

  • Quiz C (I gave you Quiz A/B and the answer keys to study)

  • One AP problem similar to tonight's homework!

Tomorrow we'll stick with chapter 17 in class.

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Page Updates!

I've revamped a few things about the site to (hopefully) make it more user friendly.

1. The Resources: Powerpoints, Assignments, and More link has been restructured. Powerpoints are better arranged and old assignments have been removed.

2. The layout of the links on the page have been changed.

3. The probability vocab list is up.

4. There is a new page for Statistics Music so you can download and memorize the stat raps! I once had a girl tell me she played the lyrics in her head during the AP exam and she earned a 3! I also slipped some other (non-statistics) jams in there...

Friday, February 3, 2012

Weekend Homework!

Please complete your take home quiz due Monday. It's the 23 point Expected Value, Variance, and Normal Model problem you grabbed in class. It's also under the classroom resources, toward the bottom.

And go GGGGGGGGGMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNN.

A couple notes:
  • The third interval in #1 is "75 to 90"

  • Number 4 has a typo; it should just say, "Interpret your expected value..."

  • Here are the answers to number 1! Make sure you use these values

P(under 60) = 0.006

P(60 to 75) = 0.494

P(75 to 90) = 0.494

P(over 90) = 0.006

Back to work Monday!

I'm pretty pumped for some expected value and variance on Monday!

I've posted your exam/quarter/semester grades under "Powerpoints and Assignments" (along with some sweet statistical analysis of our performance). You can find the document titled "Midterm Exam Grades."

PERIOD B: NO HOMEWORK! My bad!

Have a fantastic (3 day) weekend! Get rejuvenated and be ready to get back to work on Monday!

Here's a histogram of your converted AP Scores--looks like with a little work we can ALL pass the AP exam on May 16th!

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

B PERIOD--NO HOMEWORK!

I forgot about the extra AP problem for period E today, the 2011 AP problem on independence is NOT due Monday.

You WILL eventually have it as homework--so if you want to get ahead, go ahead and do the problem, research the answer, and stash it somewhere you won't lose it.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Good luck on the rest of your exams!

Monday, January 23, 2012

Exams Exams Exams!

So study study study! Hopefully I'll see a bunch of you after school today for some review.

Put in some time before your test. Work through some Barron's problems--that's why you get those (somewhat expensive) books for free! Use them!

After the exam you were given a 2011 FR question--this one problem is your homework, due Monday. Sorry for exam week homework, but spend 20 minutes trying to work this out. Then, after a legit 20 minutes of thinking, google this to check your answer (and make any corrections). I'll be checking this as your first homework assignment due Monday 1/30/12.

If it's not assumed, you shouldn't really worry about your AP problem until Friday--you should be studying for your other exams all week!

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Thursday HW: 2 AP Problems

Soooo--I was thinking of a different problem when I said "easiest problem ever on an AP exam." This 2011 question isn't quite that easy.

For homework, please complete 2007#2 and 2011#1 (AP Free-Response problems). This will count as 2 homeworks and we will review these (after your probability quiz!).

See you tomorrow!

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Wednesday HW

Please complete the 17 multiple choice (all from chapter 15) provided in class. This will be collected and graded--and worth 25 points!

This will be your second to last grade this quarter....last you'll have a pop quiz on Friday on some probability :)

I've uploaded the multiple choice for tonight under our powerpoints and assignments titled, "Chapter 15 MC." (Creative, huh?)

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

b. If you examine 4 people, what is the probability that none are in the above average category? (0.3521)

c. If you examine 4 people, what is the probability that all four are “above average?” (0.0028)

d. If you examine 10 people what is the probability that at least one is “above average?” (0.926)

e. If you examine 10 people what is the probability that exactly one is “above average?” (0.219) ***Don’t forget to multiply by 10 to account for the 10 different ways to arrange this one person!***

f. What is the probability that you find the first “above average” person on the 5th person? (0.0809)
