- This homework will count double since it's our first one of the quarter!
- An answer key will be posted on the blog tomorrow or Wednesday
- Read the tips below for some writing help:
- Describing if a point is/is not influential: (questions 6, 8)
- To determine if a point is influential we want to compare the values of r, slope, and y-intercept WITH that point in the data set, and without that point in the data set
- We then want to compare these values to see how much they changed or if they stayed roughly the same
- If a point changes slope, intercept, and/or correlation, it's influential!
- A point may not influence all three, it may, for example, only influence the correlation, but not really change slope/yint! Look at the numbers!
- Start by stating whether the point is influential or not!
- "The point __ is/is not influential because...
- Now comment on whether you're referring to adding or removing the point
- ..when the point ____ is added/removed...
- Finally, describe the effect on slope, intercept, and r (be specific--say increase/decrease, don't just say "changed."
- the correlation ____ (increases/decreases/roughly stays the same), the slope _____ and the y-intercept ____.
Want to get a head start on Wednesday's homework (in our textbook)? Here you go:
- Wednesday HW:
- Page 215: 11, 13, 14, 15,
- For #11 you must answer parts A-D for each of the 4 graphs (so you should have 16 answers for #11!)
Today's Class Recap:
- Stamp = 5 MC (can earn up to 5 stamps)
- Chapter 9 Notes (lots of vocab)
- Making Predictions: Extrapolation vs. Interpolation (based on first 2 chapter 9 slides)
- Leverage--what is it?
- Defining outliers in a scatterplot based on leverage and residual
- Understanding effect of adding/removing a point on correlation, slope, y-int
