Monday!

Today was a new start for everybody; if you were absent, take a look at chapter 11 and make sure you get someone's notes. The most important things you need to do from the chapter include understanding what randomness IS, and then being able to use that information to write a simulation.

Weekend Homework

Hey! Easy weekend this week...just complete the first quarter review worksheet I handed out in class; this should be the easiest 16 points ever offered. Just make sure you show thinking, and be honest. I can't make this course better for you if you don't offer your thoughts. I appreciate it.

On Monday we'll get into chapter 11. New stuff! I'm really pumped--it's a clean slate for all of us, a fresh start. Come ready with your game face!

Sorry I was absent...test is still on

I'm really sorry I didn't make it in today guys. I know we were supposed to have a review--since I couldn't be there to help you study and the test is STILL FRIDAY, here are some tips for studying...

• Use your Barron's book! Remember that white paperback I handed out in class? Use it! Go to the section on "Bivariate Data" and look at examples.
• Use the blog! Use the "Stat Tutorials" link to study topics regarding linear regression.
• Use your textbook! Look at chapters 7-9 primarily. There will be little from chapter 10.
• Do the practice problems mentioned in the previous post! Not only will these help you study, but they'll get you a few extra credit problems. To get the extra credit you must show work (since the answers are in the back of the book). Use the back to check your answers though for sure!
• Use the packet we filled out in class with all the writing templates typed out! If you know that packet, you're golden.
• If I were you, or if I wrote a test on Linear Regression, I'd study these topics--these may or may not be the test questions... :)

1. Is a linear model appropriate? (Check the 3 conditions!)
2. Describe an association (describe shape, direction, and strength, reference r and R^2)
3. Write the equation from a computer output (or if given the data)
4. Interpret slope (remember, slope is rise over run--rewrite this in context to deduce the meaning)
5. Interpret y-intercept (remember from Algebra, for the y-int x=0. So this tells us the predicted value if the explanatory variable is 0).
6. Interpret the coefficient of determination (R^2 tells us the percent of variation in the response variable that can be accounted for by variation in the explanatory; or, it tells us the percent of variation in the response that can be attributed to a linear relationship with the explanatory).
7. Use a model to predict ("plug n' chug")
8. Calculate a residual ("plug n' chug," then actual minus predicted--y-yhat)
9. Predict for an x-value outside those given--extrapolation! (not confident in this prediction)
10. Recognize outliers, leverage, and influence from a graph.

Study! And don't forget your multiple choice tests Friday! Hopefully the class time to work on them helped!

Test Coming Up!

Soo....tomorrow we'll start with some new stuff. Your homework tonight is to grade and comment on someone else's paper--if you simply list a letter grade for each part, you will not receive full credit. I need comments! These comments will really serve as the foundation for your homework grade.

Here are some problems that I recommend to use to study for Friday's test. These are not an assigned homework, but are a good representatino of what you need to know for Friday, and you can check your progress in the back of the book. We'll look at some of these for our after school review on Wednesday.

Aaaannnd, if you hand in ALL of these problems (with work neatly shown) you'll get 4 extra credit points on your test.

Pop Quiz Tuesday on Influential Points!

Weekend Homework: complete the "packet" that you started Thursday night for homework. You can skip the question that refers to a "Special TI Function" on your calculator. This is a tough assignment--use your book to help you! This is all in chapter 10.

On Monday in class we'll grade our AP Problems--this will be a graded activity.

Don't be surprised if you have a pop quiz (probably Tuesday)--just a little 15 minute activity, probably asking to explain if a point is influential, talk about some residuals...so be ready!

Do your homework tonight! Finish up that leverage/influence worksheet I handed out yesterday!

Tomorrow in class we'll finish looking at influence and leverage and such and then move on to our chapter 10 so we can finish up and start talking about collecting data! Yay!
