Weekend Homework!

This weekend, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 428: 7, 13, 21, 23, 27a


Conditions Writing Templates: Everything in italics is what you would write for each condition.

  • Remember, the first two conditions are the same regardless of which sampling distribution you are using.
  • Random Sample: 
    • If randomization is stated: Our sample of ___(define the sample in context)___ was collected at random. 
    • If randomization is not stated: We can assume or sample of _______ is a representative sample. OR We can assume our sample of was collected randomly.
  • 10% Condition:
    • Our sample of __(define the sample in context)__ is (likely) less than 10% of         ____(define population in context)____.

  • The third condition differs, depending on which sampling distribution you are using.
  • Sampling Distribution for Proportions: Success Failure Condition
    • np>10 and nq > 10 (for this one, simply substitute in the appropriate numbers and multiply)
  • Sampling Distribution for Means: Large Enough Sample Condition
    • Our sample of _____ is large enough. (there is no set number, but anything around a size of at least 25 is "large enough)
    • If we know the population is approximately Normal (unimodal and symmetric), our sample size does not matter:
      • The population is approximately Normal so our sample size is large enough.



It looks like we could have another snow day on Monday. I know that might sound good, but hopefully we're here so we have time to learn all our Stats before May 13th! If we do have a snow day...that increases the chances I check this homework assignment from 100% to about 23531432413%. :)

Use your notes to help! Remember to check your conditions, find the standard deviation for the sampling distribution, and from there, it's all back to what we know about the Normal model.

Thursday HW!

Tonight, please complete the "Exploring Sampling Distributions" questions that we started in class (or below). Feel free to use these applets to help!

Sampling Distribution for Means Applet

The questions on the back ask about different types of sampling distributions. For example, if I were considering the sampling distribution for means, this would mean I take a sample, find the mean, and plot that mean. Then I take another sample, plot that mean, and plot it. I would continue to do this. As I plotted means, I would expect most values of the means to be "in the middle," and so ultimately I would expect most plotted 'points" in the middle, or an approximately Normal shape.

Your job is to consider the shape of the shape of the sampling distributions for maxima, minima, and medians. Think: if I take a sample, plot the max, and repeat, where would most maxima be? In the middle? On the right? On the left? What shape does this result in?

Tonight, please complete the chapter 18 reading questions provided in class! If you were out (or lost yours), the questions are below.

Chapter 18 Reading Questions

1.      READ THE CHAPTER. The more time you put into trying to understand this on your own, the better off you’ll be. We will be moving quickly through the rest of the course, spending no more than 4 days on this section. These questions are designed for you to prove that you read the chapter.

2.      Define sampling error or sampling variability.

3.      Three conditions are outlined (on page 413) for a sampling distribution of sample proportions; name each of these conditions in the space below, and provide a brief description of each.

4. Define the sampling distribution model for a proportion. That is, provide the formulas/values for the mean and standard deviation and describe the shape for a sampling distribution model for a proportion (provided on page 414). Use correct (symbolic) notation.

5.  Define the Central Limit Theorem, also known as the Fundamental Theorem of Statistics. (page 419).

6. Define the sampling distribution model for a mean. That is, provide the formulas/values for the mean and standard deviation and describe the shape for a sampling distribution model for a mean (provided on page 421). Use correct (symbolic) notation.

7. Use the following words to fill in the blanks below. (One word is used twice):

STUDY. Do it.

Tomorrow we have our unit test on methods of data collection! Study, study, study!

Here's a breakdown of tomorrow's test:

  • 9 multiple choice questions (each @ 3 points, no partial credit--so read carefully!)
  • 3 Free Response:
    • Determine which of two blocking schemes is a better choice and explain why it is the better choice
    • Diagram/design a detailed, randomized, blocked experiment
    • Identify the variable of interest, parameter of interest, sampling method, and then determine which method of calculating a mean is better (review)
And here are 2 practice questions you can use to study for the test tomorrow! (Thanks to the awesome students--Liz, Camila, and Allysa--who came to do some studying today!) 



Then, tomorrow night's homework will be to study for our matching vocab test on Wednesday! The vocab test consists of 35 words from the list below.
