Weekend Homework!

This weekend, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 428: 7, 13, 21, 23, 27a

Conditions Writing Templates: Everything in italics is what you would write for each condition.

  • Remember, the first two conditions are the same regardless of which sampling distribution you are using.
  • Random Sample:
    • If randomization is stated: Our sample of ___(define the sample in context)___ was collected at random.
    • If randomization is not stated: We can assume or sample of _______ is a representative sample. OR We can assume our sample of was collected randomly.
  • 10% Condition:
    • Our sample of __(define the sample in context)__ is (likely) less than 10% of         ____(define population in context)____.

  • The third condition differs, depending on which sampling distribution you are using.
  • Sampling Distribution for Proportions: Success Failure Condition
    • np>10 and nq > 10 (for this one, simply substitute in the appropriate numbers and multiply)
  • Sampling Distribution for Means: Large Enough Sample Condition
    • Our sample of _____ is large enough. (there is no set number, but anything around a size of at least 25 is "large enough)
    • If we know the population is approximately Normal (unimodal and symmetric), our sample size does not matter:
      • The population is approximately Normal so our sample size is large enough.

It looks like we could have another snow day on Monday. I know that might sound good, but hopefully we're here so we have time to learn all our Stats before May 13th! If we do have a snow day...that increases the chances I check this homework assignment from 100% to about 23531432413%. :)

Use your notes to help! Remember to check your conditions, find the standard deviation for the sampling distribution, and from there, it's all back to what we know about the Normal model.

Enjoy your weekend! Rest up, have some fun outside tomorrow, and do your homework! See you all Monday (hopefully)!

Thursday HW!

Tonight, please complete the "Exploring Sampling Distributions" questions that we started in class (or below). Feel free to use these applets to help!

Sampling Distribution for Proportions Applet

Sampling Distribution for Means Applet

The questions on the back ask about different types of sampling distributions. For example, if I were considering the sampling distribution for means, this would mean I take a sample, find the mean, and plot that mean. Then I take another sample, plot that mean, and plot it. I would continue to do this. As I plotted means, I would expect most values of the means to be "in the middle," and so ultimately I would expect most plotted 'points" in the middle, or an approximately Normal shape.

Your job is to consider the shape of the shape of the sampling distributions for maxima, minima, and medians. Think: if I take a sample, plot the max, and repeat, where would most maxima be? In the middle? On the right? On the left? What shape does this result in?

Exploring Sampling Distributions (HW Questions)
1.       Describe/outline the process shown in the applets to define a sampling distribution for sample proportions.  WRITE YOUR ANSWER USING COMPLETE SENTENCES. (2 points)

2.       After exploring the sampling distribution for proportions, define the model—shape, mean and standard deviation. WRITE YOUR ANSWER USING A COMPLETE SENTENCE. (1 poin
“The sampling distribution for proportions is…..with a mean of…..and a standard deviation of….”

3.       Describe/outline the process shown in the applets to define a sampling distribution for sample means. WRITE YOUR ANSWER USING COMPLETE SENTENCES. (2 points)

4.       After exploring the sampling distribution for means, define the model—shape, mean and standard deviation. WRITE YOUR ANSWER USING A COMPLETE SENTENCE. (1 point)
“The sampling distribution for means is…..with a mean of…..and a standard deviation of….”

5.       Discuss with your group: what would the sampling distribution for maxima look like? Sketch a distribution and describe the shape (in words). (1 point)

6.       Discuss with your group: what would the sampling distribution for medians look like? Sketch a distribution and describe the shape (in words). (1 point)

7.       Discuss with your group: what would the sampling distribution for minima look like? Sketch a distribution and describe the shape (in words). (1 point)

Lastly, if you'd like to get a head start, here's our weekend homework:

Ch. 18 Reading Questions.....

Tonight, please complete the chapter 18 reading questions provided in class! If you were out (or lost yours), the questions are below.

Tomorrow we will look at the following applets to continue learning about sampling distributions! If you're out, play with these and try to make some sense of them!

Sampling Distributions for Proportions Applet

Sampling Distribution for Means Applet

Chapter 18 Reading Questions

1.      READ THE CHAPTER. The more time you put into trying to understand this on your own, the better off you’ll be. We will be moving quickly through the rest of the course, spending no more than 4 days on this section. These questions are designed for you to prove that you read the chapter.

2.      Define sampling error or sampling variability.

3.      Three conditions are outlined (on page 413) for a sampling distribution of sample proportions; name each of these conditions in the space below, and provide a brief description of each.

4. Define the sampling distribution model for a proportion. That is, provide the formulas/values for the mean and standard deviation and describe the shape for a sampling distribution model for a proportion (provided on page 414). Use correct (symbolic) notation.

5.  Define the Central Limit Theorem, also known as the Fundamental Theorem of Statistics. (page 419).

6. Define the sampling distribution model for a mean. That is, provide the formulas/values for the mean and standard deviation and describe the shape for a sampling distribution model for a mean (provided on page 421). Use correct (symbolic) notation.

7. Use the following words to fill in the blanks below. (One word is used twice):
Quantitative, Categorical, Proportions, Means, Normal

“The sampling distribution for ______________ is a ______________ model and is used for

___________________ data. ”

““The sampling distribution for ______________ is a ___________ model and used for

_________________data.”

8. There are three assumptions/conditions that must be met for a sampling distribution of sample means described on page 422. Provide the names and a brief description of each of these three conditions.

9. What is standard error? (Define it; p. 424).

10. Use the glossary at the back of chapter 18 to define sampling distribution model.

11. List each of the 5 terms provided at the end of chapter 18 (page 427). This is your chapter 18 vocab list.

STUDY. Do it.

Tomorrow we have our unit test on methods of data collection! Study, study, study!

Here's a breakdown of tomorrow's test:

  • 9 multiple choice questions (each @ 3 points, no partial credit--so read carefully!)
  • 3 Free Response:
    • Determine which of two blocking schemes is a better choice and explain why it is the better choice
    • Diagram/design a detailed, randomized, blocked experiment
    • Identify the variable of interest, parameter of interest, sampling method, and then determine which method of calculating a mean is better (review)
And here are 2 practice questions you can use to study for the test tomorrow! (Thanks to the awesome students--Liz, Camila, and Allysa--who came to do some studying today!)

Then, tomorrow night's homework will be to study for our matching vocab test on Wednesday! The vocab test consists of 35 words from the list below.

Back to Work!

Time for a loooong stretch of school....we have one break, April vacation, between us and the AP exam. Get ready for a bunch of 5 day weeks (after this one)....time to get back into the school routine.

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 314: 7, 35
  • 7 is an experiment, so you need to identify the (b) subjects, (c) factors/levels, (d) treatments, (e) response variable, (f) design (blocked or randomized?), (g) blind or double blind or neither? and (h) what conclusions can we draw?
  • For 35, your task is design an experiment...
    • You can either write a procedure (with numbered steps)
    • OR you can draw a diagram, as we did in class
Tomorrow we'll keep talking about experiments. Keep the following dates in mind:

Friday: Chapter 13 Vocab Quiz

Tuesday: Unit Exam: Methods of Data Collection (Simulations, Sample Surveys, Experiments, Observational Studies--chapters 11-13)

Wednesday: Unit Vocab Exam (Matching): (chapters 11-13)

# 35 Help) In Period F we designed an experiment to test if the "limitless drug" (a pill you take that allows you to use more of your brain) is effective. Check out the diagram and notes about experiments below. This was the most detailed one of the day.

February Break = Experiments and Observational Studies (Chapter 13)

It's break already! Of course we all enjoy time off, but I'm looking forward to some normalcy in our schedule after break. We need some 5 day weeks to get our routine back and get back into the school groove so that we can be prepared for this AP exam!

Over break, please complete the reading questions and multiple choice provided in class--remember, your job is to TEACH YOURSELF chapter 13! And everything is collected/graded!

  • This is a 40 point classwork grade: 20 for the reading questions and 20 for the multiple choice! Make sure you have it!
    • There is no reason not to get a 100% on the reading questions!
    • Remember, the reading questions are given in the same order the answers appear in the book!
  • You can find the reading questions and the multiple choice under our classroom resources (in case you lost yours or you want to type your answers)
  • Email me with questions! (carofano.fm@easthartford.org)

A few other dates/tasks to keep in order:
  • We will have a chapter 13 vocab quiz on Friday, February 20th
    • The bolded words in your reading questions = vocab list
    • OR, use the glossary at the back of chapter 13
  • You have up to "after school" on Friday, February 20th to re-take your "sample, population, sampling frame, etc." chapter 12 quiz
  • We will have a UNIT TEST (chapters 11, 12, 13) on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24
  • We will have a UNIT VOCAB MATCHING TEST (chapters 11, 12, 13) on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25
Enjoy your break! I know we have a lot of work to do, but that's what comes with all of these snow days. When we return from break we'll have about 5 more classes on data collection; then, it's back to math (lots of z-scores)! See you soon!

Weekend HW and Vocab List (Updated Post)

This weekend, please complete the 25 multiple choice assignment provided in class. You can also find these under our classroom resources, entitled, "25 Sampling MC." I expect you to do them even if you were absent! Should we count this as classwork or a quiz? Vote on the poll! (Classwork is a smaller % of your overall grade than a quiz is).

In addition, here's Monday night's homework (in case you'd like to get ahead):

Page 290: 17, 19, 21, 31

Also, I have added a link to our resources on the right. A while back, Roderick told me about a resource he uses for math help (both in Stat and other courses), Yay Math...I was a little (a lot) late on getting this up, but check it out on the right. It offers a ton of different videos you can watch for help in AP Stat or another math course. Thanks Roderick!

And lastly, here's the vocab list of words for our upcoming quiz (so you can start studying now...there's a lot: you can find them all on page 287-288)

Thursday HW:

Tonight, please complete the 2013 AP Free Response question provided in class (or below).

Tomorrow we'll continue to take notes (and hopefully finish chapter 12) as we discuss the types of bias. Then, on Monday/Tuesday we'll do some practice in class, followed by a chapter 12 quiz (vocab and AP problems) on Wednesday. (This will all get pushed back 1 day if we have a snow day Monday).

Here is the link to the scoring guidelines/answers for tonight's homework: Check them and grade your response! 2013 Scoring Rubric/Answer Key

Hump Day Homework!

Quiz Tomorrow! (just like the homework from last night)

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 290: 11, 12, 13, 27

There are a couple sampling method we did not get to in class (that may be homework answers):
  • Multistage Sampling: any combination of sampling methods we discussed in class (census, SRS, stratified, cluster, systematic) (Ex: Split the lakes into strata, by state. Then, within each state, randomly generate a zip-code, and test all of the lakes in that zip code. This combines a stratified and cluster sample.)
  • Voluntary Response Sampling: offering people the opportunity to vote, by their choice, like an online poll (Ex: Have people test the pH of lakes near their homes and have them send you the results)
  • Convenience Sampling: sampling those who are convenient (Ex: sampling the lakes closest to your house)
(I'll have plenty of time to check this homework while you work on your quiz!)

Tomorrow we'll wrap up our notes on sampling strategies and then talk about different types of bias. Hopefully we'll finish all of those notes tomorrow (but it's not likely) so we can do some multiple choice and AP problems soon! Yay!

2'sDay HW

Back to school, back to work...until the next snow storm...

Tonight, please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 291: 1, 3, 15 (**We will have a short, "pop" quiz later this week just like the stuff covered in this homework!**)

Tomorrow we'll talk about all of the methods of sampling (hopefully), and then on Thursday it's on to the types of bias. We'll aim for some multiple choice on Friday, some free-response on Monday, and then a vocab and chapter 12 quiz next Tuesday/Wednesday. That will give us 1 day to start experiments in class before February vacation, over which you'll do some more research yourselves. (That's the plan...)

See you all tomorrow! Enjoy your afternoon!
