Day 2 and Day 3!

Hey you--do your homework and ace your sub work tomorrow!

Remember, tomorrow I will be out--here's what you need to do:

  • Complete the "AP Statistics Classwork: AP MC" packet provided by the sub in class tomorrow
    • You must show work for every question (except #2) to earn credit--no work, no points.
    • All of the questions are multiple choice except for #1--for #1 it's an open ended asking you to calculate the fences for a boxplot--show your work and circle your final answer.
    • You may work in a small group of up to 4 students, or work with a partner, or work individually. However, if you work with a group larger than 4 you will be given a zero. Don't do that.
    • You must turn in all work at the bell to the sub. If you do not turn it in (even if you don't finish) you will get a zero.
  • Some of this content is based on what we've learned so far, some of it is not--you have to figure it all out!
    • This will be challenging--it's supposed to be! That's what AP is all about!
    • Persevere. Don't give up. Work hard. Try different ideas. Talk to your group. Figure it out. You got this.

The "Analyzing Context" homework is due on Tuesday--this is our first homework grade so be sure to get it done!

  • On Tuesday I'll provide an answer key so we can check our work, then we'll answer any questions...
  • We'll have our first quiz on Wednesday--it'll be just like this homework assignment, so the more effort you put into the homework, the more prepared you'll be to get an A!

Lastly, enjoy your long weekend! Get your homework done, enjoy some time with friends and family, and use some time to watch the crash course videos to help improve how you learn!

You can also check out the Crash Course page for tons of other videos that are specific to different content areas! Check it out!

Happy First Day!

I hope you all had an AWESOME first day! I hope you're excited about the content you'll be learning, about the classmates you'll be working with, and about the teachers who will help to facilitate all that learning!

Tomorrow in class we'll get back to our notes on context and look at some examples to practice describing our context. Then, if time permits, we'll get back to working with our boxplots, histograms, and other graphical displays.

Remember, I will be absent on Friday (sorry period E, forgot to tell you that)--you have some AP and SAT multiple choice questions as classwork, and this will be collected by the sub (and graded by me). Come to class ready to work and ace that assignment.

The following homework is due on Tuesday (I'll give you the hard copy tomorrow)--feel free to get a head start now!

One More Summer Class!

Another day of hard work is done! Great job maintaining your focus today--you had to sit through a loooong class of lecture and lots of calculator stuff. I appreciate your engagement/focus in class. Keep it up!

Tomorrow we'll start with 35-40 minutes of learning about means of combined samples and a little probability; then we'll have some time to work on our summer assignment in class.

Remember, if you complete and turn in your summer assignment tomorrow you will earn extra credit!

Do it tonight! Try everything, then use some free time in class tomorrow (goal = 30 minutes of time to work) to finish up any "loose ends" and get this turned in!

These questions are based on Tuesday's class:
  • #13 (Creating a Histogram)
  • #18 (Create a bar graph)
  • #31 (Find median given a histogram)

And these are based on Wednesday's class:
  • #3 (describe correlation)
  • #6, 7 (define variables)
  • #9 (write the equation of the line of best fit, find r, R^2)
  • #13 (create histogram using calculator)
  • #14-16 (finding summary statistics)
    • Range = Max - Min
  • #17 (create a boxplot)
  • #26, 27 (define variables)
  • You can skip #12. We did not have time to cover this, so it will not be scored as part of the assignment.

You should be able to complete the following questions on your own--these are not necessarily based on things we'll learn this week (do these tonight too!):
  • #1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 23, 24, 25, 28, 29
  • **We can discuss number 8 in class tomorrow

And here's what we'll address Thursday:
  • #19-22 (probability)
  • #30 (find mean for combined samples)

2 Summer Classes 2 Go!

Thanks for being here today! It was awesome to meet all of you and get started on our coursework for the year!

If you were out, today we completed a warmup to practice reading histograms; then we took some notes and learned about how to create a histogram given a data set.

Tomorrow we'll pick up where we left off today; we'll learn how to create a histogram using our graphing calculator, then we'll get into creating boxplots. After that it's on to linear regression--lots to do tomorrow, so come ready to work.

Remember, if you complete and turn in your summer assignment on Thursday you will earn extra credit!

I think the best way to do your summer assignment is piece by piece--do some tonight, do some tomorrow night, then finish any last (few) questions in class Thursday and you'll be done!

Here's what I'd look at tonight (based on Tuesday's class):

  • #13 (Creating a Histogram)
  • #18 (Create a bar graph)
  • #33 (Find median given a histogram)
You should be able to complete the following questions on your own--these are not necessarily based on things we'll learn this week (do these tonight too!):
  • #1-7, 25-28, 30, 32 (turns out I can't count and skipped 31, woops)

Here's what we'll cover tomorrow (at least this is the plan):
  • #14-17 (Finding summary stats on calculator, creating a boxplot)
  • #8-12, 24, 29 (Linear Regression)
And here's what we'll address Thursday:
  • #19-23

Summer Academy Next Week! (blog updated 8/15)

If you have not done so, please be sure to sign up for the MANDATORY AP Summer Academy--it's less than one week away!

You can either send me an email (carofano.fm@easthartford.org) or a Remind message and let me know what time you'd prefer.

Summer Classes: 8/21, 8/22, and 8/23
  • Choose one time for each day:  10:20-11:35 or 11:40-12:55
    • Did I mention these are mandatory?
    • Sorry, 9:00-10:15 is full
Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Here are the updated rosters for our MANDATORY summer academy in August (updated 8/15):
  • Please (do me a favor)--spread the word to any friends you have who are taking AP Stat! We all need to be here to get started on our quest to top those impressive scores above!
  • Be sure to double check these, even if you signed up--let me know if I made any errors (wrong time or spelled your name wrong or anything else)
August 21, 22, and 23 Rosters:

Lastly, here's all the info about our course from the front page of our summer assignment:
  • We have 3 MANDATORY summer sessions in August AND you also must complete this summer assignment!
    • You will have the opportunity to work assignment at our summer academy in August—bring it with you! This summer assignment reviews some of the fundamental skills/concepts I would like you to know/understand prior to taking this course; it also assesses some of the new content that we will learn at our mandatory summer classes
  • To take AP Statistics it is required that you complete this assignment and attend our summer academy—meeting these requirements demonstrates that you are prepared for the workload and responsibility that comes with an AP course.
  • Summer Assignment Due Date: on/before the first day of school
    •  This will serve as your first test grade for the course.
  • A graphing calculator is required to complete this assignment and for this course.
    • I recommend a TI-84, as this will be used in our instruction; students have, however, been successful using other calculator models (Casio, TI-89, TINspire, TI-83), but you will have to learn how to use these on your own.
  • Be sure to regularly check the EHHS AP Stat blog over the summer—here you will find helpful hints, links with resources you can use for its completion, class updates/news, and even potential credit opportunities! This is the  #1 resource for our course!
  • You also must sign up for Remind for this course!
    • Download the (free) Remind app and enter our class code: @ehhsapstat
    • OR, text @ehhsapstat to 81010
