Tuesday HW!

Tonight please complete the following in your textbook:

Page 363-365: 11, 13, 15, 21ab, 23
  • Pay attention to the wording--look for conditional probability!
    • Remember, if we "know something to be true" then we have a conditional probability!
    • For example, in #11c, the question states, "What's the probability that a man with high blood pressure has high cholesterol?"
      • So we KNOW that this man has high blood pressure! That's our "given" information...
      • We want to calculate P(high cholesterol GIVEN high blood pressure)
    • Or, in 23a, we're asked in a, "If a home for sale has a garage..."
      • We know this house has a garage--more conditional probability!
      • P(pool GIVEN garage)!
  • Want some extra practice with some "without replacement" questions (and a little extra credit)?
    • Also complete #20 with your homework
    • Here are the answers (you must show all work):
      • a.) 0.632
      • b.) 0.140
      • c.) 0.003
      • d.) 0.624

Today in class we learned what conditional probability is and then examined the conditional probability formula! If you were out you definitely want to catch up on these notes! We'll be working with this more in class tomorrow as we introduce tree diagrams!

Tomorrow we'll continue to work with some conditional probability and start to use tree diagrams! Here's the (very tentative) plan for the rest of the week:
  • Wednesday: Finish chapter 15 notes: tree diagrams and conditional prob!
  • Thursday: Chapter 15 vocab quiz then some chapter 15 classwork/practice
  • Friday: More chapter 15 practice (AP FR, MC)
  • Monday (12/11): Start chapter 16!

Chapter 15 Vocab List--most words repeat from ch. 14
  • Sample Space
  • Disjoint (Mutually Exclusive)
  • Independence
  • Conditional Probability
  • Union
  • Intersection
  • Complement
  • "Given"
  • Sum of probabilties of all possible outcomes
  • Venn Diagram (when can we use it?)
  • Tree diagram (when can we use it?)
  • Probability
  • Equally Likely

And lastly, one of our classmates lost a necklace that's very important to them--if you see this necklace anywhere (including on a person) please let me know!
