Vocab Quiz Tomorrow, HW Due Friday

*If you were absent today you must make up your "Analyzing Context" quiz tomorrow or Friday! Send me a Remind/email or see me tomorrow to set up a plan!

Tomorrow we'll start class with our first (multiple choice) vocab quiz (chapter 2)--your first priority tonight is to prepare yourself to earn an A! The vocab list is below.
  • All or some of these words will be on your vocab quiz, which is entirely multiple choice
  • You will be given the word and asked to choose the best definition, or given the definition and must choose the correct term
  • Data
  • Categorical Data/Variable
  • Quantitative Data/Variable
  • statistic(s)
  • Statistics
  • relative (just means to use %'s!)
  • What statistics are used to summarize quantitative data?
    • Which are measures of center? Of spread?
  • What graphical displays are used with quantitative data?
  • What statistic is used to summarize categorical data?
  • What graphical displays are used with categorical data?
  • Response variable(s): this is what we are measuring or recording in a study
  • Experiment
  • (Sample) Survey
  • Observational Study

The following homework assignment is due (and will be checked) on Friday, but get a head start tonight!
  • Period A I will check last night's homework tomorrow since I did not do so today
  • Page 39: 19
    • Some probability review here--use your notes from day 3 of our summer academy!
    • Remember to look at the "of ____" to determine your denominator...
      • For example, if we were asked what percent of waitlisted students are black/hispanic, then we know our denominator is 300, or the total number waitlisted ("of waitlisted")
  • Pages 65-71: 9, 11, 17, 19a, 33c
    • For 9b don't worry about the answer in the back of the book or describing shape...we'll learn that...
      • For this question (9b), I want you to write a few sentences...
        • Write a sentence providing the median size (in acres) of the 36 vineyards and the range in sizes of vineyards
        • Then, write a sentence describing what this graph tells us about the sizes of these 36 vineyards--what sizes are most vineyards? "Most vineyards are _________.
          • Comment on any "unusual features--were any vineyards unusually large or small? What size?
    • For 11b just describe the center and spread--use your calculator to find the 1 var stats
      • Center: provide the mean and median
        • Write these in a complete sentence: "The mean gas price for 16 gas stations in Ithaca, NY is ___ and the median price is ___."
      • Spread: provide range, IQR, and standard deviation (Sx)
        • Write these in a complete sentence: "The range of gas prices for 16 gas stations in Ithaca, NY is ____, with an IQR of ___, and a standard deviation of _____."
    • For 11c look at your stemplot--what unusual feature do you notice?
    • For 17 only create the stemplot.
    • For 33c you want to determine if there are any outliers for the # of assaults (per 1000) and then for the # killed-injured (per 1000)...
      • This is two different problems--first use your calculator and the 1 Var Stats to find Q1 and Q3 for the # assaults, then calculate the fences to see if there are outliers
      • Repeat this process for the # killed-injured
Tomorrow in class we'll finish up our notes on "creating displays" and start to transition to some notes on describing them! See you there!

Tuesday Homework, Upcoming Quizzes

Tonight please complete the following in your textbook--and check your answers for the odds!

Page 65: 7, 22 (period A: I took out #19 AND change 21 to 22)

  • For #7a, "Describe this distribution," I want you to write a few sentences describing what this graph tells you about the sugar content (as a % of weight) of these brands of breakfast cereals...
    • Some ideas to consider:: what is the range of sugar content? What is the median sugar content? What amounts of sugar content do cereals cluster around?
  • For #22 please create a histogram--use a bin width of 10
Page 94: 23, 42
  • For 42, ignore the directions--I want you to use this data to create a boxplot

We will start class tomorrow with our "Analyzing Context" quiz (just like the homework due today)--come ready to earn an A!

And on Thursday we'll start class with our first (multiple choice) vocab quiz (chapter 2)--the vocab list is below!

Day 2 and Day 3!

Hey you--do your homework and ace your sub work tomorrow!

Remember, tomorrow I will be out--here's what you need to do:

  • Complete the "AP Statistics Classwork: AP MC" packet provided by the sub in class tomorrow
    • You must show work for every question (except #2) to earn credit--no work, no points.
    • All of the questions are multiple choice except for #1--for #1 it's an open ended asking you to calculate the fences for a boxplot--show your work and circle your final answer.
    • You may work in a small group of up to 4 students, or work with a partner, or work individually. However, if you work with a group larger than 4 you will be given a zero. Don't do that.
    • You must turn in all work at the bell to the sub. If you do not turn it in (even if you don't finish) you will get a zero.
  • Some of this content is based on what we've learned so far, some of it is not--you have to figure it all out!
    • This will be challenging--it's supposed to be! That's what AP is all about!
    • Persevere. Don't give up. Work hard. Try different ideas. Talk to your group. Figure it out. You got this.

The "Analyzing Context" homework is due on Tuesday--this is our first homework grade so be sure to get it done!

  • On Tuesday I'll provide an answer key so we can check our work, then we'll answer any questions...
  • We'll have our first quiz on Wednesday--it'll be just like this homework assignment, so the more effort you put into the homework, the more prepared you'll be to get an A!

Lastly, enjoy your long weekend! Get your homework done, enjoy some time with friends and family, and use some time to watch the crash course videos to help improve how you learn!

You can also check out the Crash Course page for tons of other videos that are specific to different content areas! Check it out!

Happy First Day!

I hope you all had an AWESOME first day! I hope you're excited about the content you'll be learning, about the classmates you'll be working with, and about the teachers who will help to facilitate all that learning!

Tomorrow in class we'll get back to our notes on context and look at some examples to practice describing our context. Then, if time permits, we'll get back to working with our boxplots, histograms, and other graphical displays.

Remember, I will be absent on Friday (sorry period E, forgot to tell you that)--you have some AP and SAT multiple choice questions as classwork, and this will be collected by the sub (and graded by me). Come to class ready to work and ace that assignment.

The following homework is due on Tuesday (I'll give you the hard copy tomorrow)--feel free to get a head start now!

One More Summer Class!

Another day of hard work is done! Great job maintaining your focus today--you had to sit through a loooong class of lecture and lots of calculator stuff. I appreciate your engagement/focus in class. Keep it up!

Tomorrow we'll start with 35-40 minutes of learning about means of combined samples and a little probability; then we'll have some time to work on our summer assignment in class.

Remember, if you complete and turn in your summer assignment tomorrow you will earn extra credit!

Do it tonight! Try everything, then use some free time in class tomorrow (goal = 30 minutes of time to work) to finish up any "loose ends" and get this turned in!

These questions are based on Tuesday's class:
  • #13 (Creating a Histogram)
  • #18 (Create a bar graph)
  • #31 (Find median given a histogram)

And these are based on Wednesday's class:
  • #3 (describe correlation)
  • #6, 7 (define variables)
  • #9 (write the equation of the line of best fit, find r, R^2)
  • #13 (create histogram using calculator)
  • #14-16 (finding summary statistics)
    • Range = Max - Min
  • #17 (create a boxplot)
  • #26, 27 (define variables)
  • You can skip #12. We did not have time to cover this, so it will not be scored as part of the assignment.

You should be able to complete the following questions on your own--these are not necessarily based on things we'll learn this week (do these tonight too!):
  • #1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 11, 23, 24, 25, 28, 29
  • **We can discuss number 8 in class tomorrow

And here's what we'll address Thursday:
  • #19-22 (probability)
  • #30 (find mean for combined samples)

2 Summer Classes 2 Go!

Thanks for being here today! It was awesome to meet all of you and get started on our coursework for the year!

If you were out, today we completed a warmup to practice reading histograms; then we took some notes and learned about how to create a histogram given a data set.

Tomorrow we'll pick up where we left off today; we'll learn how to create a histogram using our graphing calculator, then we'll get into creating boxplots. After that it's on to linear regression--lots to do tomorrow, so come ready to work.

Remember, if you complete and turn in your summer assignment on Thursday you will earn extra credit!

I think the best way to do your summer assignment is piece by piece--do some tonight, do some tomorrow night, then finish any last (few) questions in class Thursday and you'll be done!

Here's what I'd look at tonight (based on Tuesday's class):

  • #13 (Creating a Histogram)
  • #18 (Create a bar graph)
  • #33 (Find median given a histogram)
You should be able to complete the following questions on your own--these are not necessarily based on things we'll learn this week (do these tonight too!):
  • #1-7, 25-28, 30, 32 (turns out I can't count and skipped 31, woops)

Here's what we'll cover tomorrow (at least this is the plan):
  • #14-17 (Finding summary stats on calculator, creating a boxplot)
  • #8-12, 24, 29 (Linear Regression)
And here's what we'll address Thursday:
  • #19-23
