The Weekend!

It's that time again....hopefully the rain holds off because there's nothing better than some AP Stats, outside, in fall.

I think someone should create an AP Stat 2012-2013 facebook group--might be a nice way to get homework, bounce ideas around, etc. Maybe some extra credit for the administrator and those who participate?

Happy Birthday Tedisha (today)! And Monica (like a year ago)!

This weekend, please complete the 16 multiple choice (review) questions. Remember, all answers and work must be shown on the answer sheet to receive credit! This is worth twice as much as an open ended AP problem, so don't forget!

If you forgot/lost/don't have the handout, each of the (9) questions are provided below:

Use your textbook to answer each of the questions (from chapter 6!) below:


1.) What does a z-score, or standardized score, measure?

2.) What is shifting data? And how does it affect measures of position (max, min, mean, median, etc.) and spread (range, IQR, standard deviation)?

3.) What does it mean to rescale data? How does rescaling affect measures of position and spread?

4.) Calculate the z-score for a student who scored 91 on an exam, if the class had an average of 87 and a standard deviation of 1.8. (Use the step-by-step example on page 107 as a guide).

5.) To apply a Normal model what shape must our distribution be? Describe the shape in words, and provide a picture.

6.) The standard Normal model has a mean of _________ and a standard deviation of _________.

7.) What does the Empirical, or 68/95/99.7 rule tell us? Explain in words (p. 109!).

8.) If a distribution is normal, what shape does a Normal probability plot show?

Thursday Homework (Go GMen!)

Answers to 24:

d.) Both distributions of ozone level for January and June appear to be fairly symmetric; there were two years with ozone levels consider outliers in June, but no outliers in January. The median ozone level for January is slightly less than that of June. Ozone levels in January were much more variable, as it had both a higher range and higher interquartile range (IQR)--in other words, ozone levels in June were more consistent.

e.) Median ozone levels generally increase from January to APril, then decrease from April through October, before again rising again from October to January to April--it appears this is a cycle (in changes in ozone level). The ozone levels are more variable (spread out) in the winder months, and increase in consistency ffrom March Through August (as the interquartile ranges and ranges generally decrease over this time).

And just a heads up--tomorrow you'll have another multiple choice (pop!) quiz, but this time on your own--so do an extra-nice job on tonight's homework! The questions are more difficult than the first three, and are generally about boxplots and other types of quantitative displays (dotplots, histograms, stemplots).   After that we'll do a couple things in groups--lots of graded work tomorrow!

Tuesday HW

Tonight please complete #'s 1-3 (completely) on the Quiz A--Chapter 5 worksheet provided in class.

Here are a few tips:

1a. If you need help with the histogram (by hand and on your calculator), use the TI Tips in the yellow box in your textbook (for calculator help!) Histograms are in chapter 4.

1d. Look at the shape of the histogram! If it's skewed, we use median and IQR. If symmetric, we prefer the mean and standard deviation.

2a...Think!

2b. Calculate the "fences" we discussed today in class to find the boundaries for outliers.

Please complete the (chapter 3) take home quiz provided in class for Monday. Don't forget! This is your first quiz grade! Any late papers will be docked points, and none will be accepted after Wednesday. (You lose 5 points each day).

***I don't feel comfortable counting the independence question as part of your homework--I think we need some more practice. Therefore, the 2 sided paper will be collected (it's your quiz). We'll go over the independence question (regarding exercise and gender) Monday in class.***

Here's an email I just sent to one of your peers regarding your homework--maybe it'll help recap what we talked about in class.

Also, I've uploaded a pdf file of the homework, just in case you can't find yours.


You have two jobs for each of the circled scenarios. First, identify the variables that were recorded and whether you think they're quantitative (a measurement of some type, with units) or categorical (results separated into groups/categories). Then, try to identify the context:

Who is the study about? (Who (or what) provided the data/information?)
What is being recorded? (This will be the same as your variables list, no need to write this twice)
Where is this study done? And when?
Why is this information being collected?
How is it being collected?

We did talk about this some in class, so just do your best. We'll be discussing our responses tomorrow in class. I can't wait!
