12/16

Long time, no post. My b.

So over the weekend you had a packet of probability problems (chapter 14) to do. These were collected today (Tuesday 12/16), since I wasn't here yesterday.

Yesterday with the sub you were to read and take notes on chapter 15 in preparation for the new material/reading quiz.

Tonight, your homework is simple--get any last minute invitations to the January 17 review signed and back to me. Thanks!

Enjoy the afternoon (maybe it'll snow tomorrow morning!)

Friday/Weekend Homework

Not so many posts this week...but not so much homework either. Just study for that mammoth test I'm giving you...

Tomorrow (Friday) you'll finish 15 multiple choice questions and 1 AP problem for "Day 2" of your test. I know, that sounds brutal. It ain't so bad though...Please be respectful of the test environment, the substitute, and your peers. Talking during tomorrow's exam will be considered a serious offense, punishable by up to 10 points off your test grade. I wouldn't think such crimes would be committed in AP Statistics, though.

Enjoy your weekend. For homework you'll have 18 True/False statements to respond to; remember, for ones that are false, you must offer an explanation as to "why."

On Monday we'll get back into the probability stuff and get going with chapter 14!

And, if you're bored, there's a hot and pretty cheap concert this Saturday at the Webster Theater (Underground Stage) in Hartford--Eric Hutchinson. If you like stuff in the category of Jason Mraz, Gavin Degraw, Justin Nozuka, or any other guy playing poppy music on a guitar and/or piano, check it out.

12/1/08

Happy December! Only 24 days til XMas. Woop woop.

So your homework tonight differs by period...

Period D: 2 AP problems

Period H: You know..

PS...There will be a pop quiz tomorrow. 8 multiple choice. One of the questions is the poll question....

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Check this out...

Interesting story about video games helping kids to learn math. We'll be answering some discussion questions about this when you get back from break, so you may want to get a head start.

11/25

Yo yo yo! Your homework tonight is to finish the 4 AP problems we began in class.

Tomorrow, we're not exactly having a quiz. You'll have an article to read and a series of discussion questions to answer about the article. It is a quiz grade, but not the traditional quiz you're used to. So, no need to stress. I know we're all pumped with pep rally and such, but it's important to get this done before we forget about school for a few days, rather than do it when we get back.

And remember, we'll have a "Part 3" test on chapters 11, 12, 13 the week we're back. You may want to start reviewing stuff now.

Hope to see you all at the game!

Other than that, just make sure you flip over to the GGGGGGGGGGGGMMMMMEeennn on Sunday and ensure that they're winning. Or not.

Anyone have a good idea for a poll question?

Any suggestions for how I can help you learn better?

Anyone have a cd they've been bumping and they just can't stop? If so, what is it?

Your homework tonight is to read chapter 12, as well as finish the extra credit AP problems. Remember, those are a potential 10 more points on your 5 AP problems, so that could be a big boost. And if you choose, take those chapter 12 notes in case we have a reading quiz!

No more 0's.

Lil' Tidbits O' Information

First off, the answer to the multiple choice question was E--that's 5/6 who got it right! This AP Exam ain't so hard...

I'm in the process of finding a new question to post, but they're tough to find b/c most have diagrams or are too long for the poll question.

Interesting fact about football and politics...prior to this election, 16 out of 17 times the Washington Redskins won their last game before the election, the incumbent party won the Presidency and stayed in power. This year, the Redskins lost this last game, and in fact the incumbent party lost as well. What do you think of this? There's 17/18 times we see this correlation, so we can probably assume cause, right? So next election, if we want Obama to win, root for Washington.

I also found it extremely interesting that my oil company seemed to have extrapolated when I signed a fixed contract. Huh? Let me clear that up. So back in August, I had to re-sign with my oil company; I got to choose a fixed rate of $3.90 or pay according to the market. Because projections at that time showed crude oil prices to be steadily increasing, I chose the fixed rate. My bad. I assumed the positive correlation would continue, but in fact, gas/oil has now dropped in price. So now I'm paying $3.90 for oil that costs far less. Of course my fixed rate could pay off in the long run if gas rises, but this just goes to show that you can never assume a trend continues in statistics. We never know what outside factors, whether economic, social, political, psychological, etc., will cause that relationship to change.

Way to blow it, math teacher.

This Weekend (11/7-11/9)

First off, I missed you guys once again. I'm not feeling too hot right now, but I'll be in tomorrow. Gotta tough it out for Friday, and I got the first b-boy club meeting tomorrow.

So ya know, your homework this weekend is as follows:

Page 266: 1 – 9 (odd) 13, 15, 19, 25, 29, 33

On Monday we'll likely have a "Simulation Quiz" (it'll be one of the homework questions, but which one...?)

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Back to Business

I made sure I got this post in before I got home and couldn't peel myself away from Rock Band 2. Seriously, that game should be illegal.

Soooo, your homework tonight--read chapter 11. It's really short, so there's no excuse not to get an A if we have a reading quiz. Do it up!

Other than that, just wanted to blab about some election stuff. There was SOOOOO much statistics I couldn't stop smilling watching CNN. My face even hurts a little. If you get a chance, just check out a quick lil' video on youtube or CNN.com or something and soak it all in. That's the crazy thing about this class--it really does exist in the everyday world you live in!

I'll get off my nerdy math guy pedestal now. On another note, today began the new quarter. Step it up. If you got a C last quarter, bump it to a B. If you got a 45, get a 60. If you got a 97, get a 98. No one's perfect, so we all need to do better. No zeroes this quarter! You'll find that if you just do all your work (and you didn't in the first quarter) your average will go up quite a bit!

Keep it real. And go check out the band Head Automatica. They're pretty dancy. The album "Decadence" has more synth/electronic stuff, and "Popaganda" is more rockin. But they both make me shake it like a polaroid picture. And they drop hot quotes like the one I'ma close with.

"I'm a soldier and a poet, but I'm a dancer at best."

First Quarter Grades!

Go to the "Stat Downloads" section and you'll find 2 Excel spreadsheets with the final grades (by ID).

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Wed. Oct 29/Thurs Oct. 30

Wed. Oct 29 HW: Chapter 10 exercises--12, 13, 15, 17

Thurs. Oct. 30 HW: 5 MC Questions handed out in class

Annnnnnndddd....

Tomorrow in class we'll begin working on a take-home assignment for the long weekend. Not a test, not a quiz, just a project grade. It'll be a good way to start off the quarter with a high grade, seeing as you have a day in class and a 4 day weekend where you can use all of your notes, friends, books, review guides, blog, and so on. Also, if you have the chance, I HIGHLY recommend you find one of your AP Stat friends and work on the assignment together. For this, that would not be cheating, but cooperative learning. Do it!

When you return we'll start up "Part III" with chapter 11. Your homework on Wed. (when you return) will likely be to read chapter 11, so if you'd like to get a head start you can do that up.

Enjoy the break, and have a fun SAFE Halloween. Don't disregard the fun and safe comment as a cheesy warning that you hear all the time. You hear it, b/c it's legit. It's cool to have a blast with your friends, but stay smart. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.

And in case you all forgot, I love you guys.

Peace.

Long Time, No Post

I apologize for being a slacker. It happens to the best of us at times--the key is just to be consistent. No one's perfect. (Little tidbit o' advice for the day).

Alright--over the weekend you should've read chapter 10 (and taken notes).

Monday, Oct. 27 your homework was to work on the graphing calculator lab we began in class, exploring different methods to re-express data.

Tonight you have the Chapter 10 exercises, 1 - 7. Tomorrow we'll work on a few problems in class, and then give you some homework for Thursday. Ideally, we'll do some multiple choice/matching (with partners) on Friday IN CLASS, and then you won't have a take home test! Yay!

Thursday, October 23, 2008

10/23/08

Only 3 more days until the Giants' showdown with the Steelers. I know you're all probably more pumped than I am for that...

So today in class we'll be working on a Linear Regression project--you'll use the class time to get all of the math done (an outline, pretty much), and for homework you'll have to write up your results in a 1-2 page report. This will be good review for your quiz. To review some of the older (chapter 7) stuff, we'll work through a practice test at the after school review. If you're unable to come, here are the answers to the multiple choice on Practice Test B:

1. B
2. D
3. A
4. A
5. C
6. E
7. C
8. D
9. A
10. C
11 (a) none (b) positive (c) positive (d) negative (e) curved
12. (a) students who send more emails tend to have lower grades (b) this plan assumes cause--point out a lurking variable
13. b = .24, intercept = 5.08; predicted number of cars is 14.68 (or 15)
14. Sorry, too much variation and too much to put up on the blog. Just remember--use your calculator, find the regression. When you interpret slope, you're thinking "how does y change when x changes by 1?" The units for slope will always be "y per x." The intercept should be interpreted as "What happens when x (explanatory variable) is 0?" Remember to think of this in the specific context your given.

Study!

Tomorrow you'll take your quiz, and your weekend homework will be to read chapter 10. READ! TAKE NOTES! There is absolutely no reason for anyone to score under a B on a reading quiz. These grades are simply a matter of effort--if you actually read the chapter (not the summary) and take notes, you will get a 100. For those of you who ask for extra credit, this is as close as it gets. These grades should easily bump up your grade and be a consistent "A" on a quiz. The grades for our Chapter 9 reading quiz were atrocious--and it was the shortest chapter so far!

So in sum, read and take notes on chapter 10 this weekend. Or don't complain about a grade that's not up to your standards.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

10/22/08

Definitely forgot to put up your homework yesterday (10/21)--read chapter 9.

For tonight: Page 212: 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,12

Monday, October 20, 2008

Monday, Oct. 20

Today we worked in groups on a few regression problems, talked about the weekend homework, and did a little with the R-squared stuff. We'll start with chapter 9 tomorrow--notes are online.

Your homework for tonight is to find the regression, interpret slope/y-intercept, examine a residual plot, and explain the variables for two data sets (one based on defribulators, the other on injury recovery time). You also have a worksheet exploring regressions.

Remember, those 5 AP problems are due on Halloween. If you started now, you could get some substantial work done.

There will also be an after school session this Thursday, recapping all we've done in this "Part"--chapter(s) 7,8,9. Be there, son (or daughter).

Friday, October 17, 2008

Friday, Oct. 17 HW

FRRRIIIIIIDAAAAAYYYYY! Woo!

Weekend homework:

page 189: 3, 15 - 49 (odd)

A little update on what's coming--Monday we'll wrap up with chapter 8, and your homework will be to study for the quiz we'll have on Tuesday (Quiz on Chapters 7,8). Then on Wednesday, we'll start chapter 9. Chapter 9 should take us to Monday, and then we'll start 10. We'll be having the Part II test on Halloween, NO MATTER WHAT. That's also when your 5 AP problems are due (may be a good way to study). We'll discuss a date for an after school review, most likely the Wednesday/Thursday before the test (which is on Friday).

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Thursday, Oct. 16 HW

Your homework tonight is as follows:

Page 189
1,5,7,9,11,13,14

I also handed out 5 AP questions about Linear Regression--due on Halloween.

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Wednesday, 10/15

Last night (Tuesday, 10/14), no homework, and thus no post.

Tonight your homework is the 3 AP problems handed out in class. Get an A!

Monday, October 13, 2008

Chapter 8 Notes Are Up!

Yeah, so I post math stuff at 3 a.m. What?

Friday, October 10, 2008

Weekend of 10/10 - 10/13

Long weekeennnnnddd!!! Yay!

Of course you'll have a little bit of Statistics to spice up your life over the next three days as you complete the following:

Read Chapter 8 (same deal as usual--if you take notes, you may use them on the (potential) chapter8 reading quiz)

Complete the 3 worksheets we started in class. These include the matching with scatter plots and the two quizzes, A and B. If you are reading this and were absent on Friday, you likely have the matching but will need to grab the other two on Tuesday.

Monday morning we'll begin Chapter 8, and get into chapter 9 by the end of the week. We're aiming for a test two weeks from today (10/14).

On a totally unrelated note, I think this is a pretty hot lyric--"There's only one me in the galaxy, I am an endangered species"--if you agree and want to check it out, go cop the Little Jackie cd on itunes. It's good stuff if you like poppy stuff.

Enjoy your three day break. Of course I'll miss all of our fun math adventures for the next few days, but we'll get back to it on Tuesday.

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

HW Wednesday, 10/8

I know, I know...I failed to put up yesterday's homework. If you checked the blog and it wasn't here that's my bad, so you can hand it in tomorrow.

Tues. 10/7: p 160, 1 - 13 (odd)

Wed. 10/8: p 160, 4,6,12,15,19,21, 23, 25, 17

Monday, October 6

First off, I missed you all today. We'll get back on the horse tomorrow.

I posted the chapter 7 notes (Stat Downloads link), which we'll begin tomorrow.

I hope the day went well and you were able to bust up those AP Problems. Your homework is to read chapter 7 and take notes--any notes you take may be used on the quiz.

See you soon!

Updates, HW, and Such: Friday, Oct. 3

Soooooooooooooo, here's the latest:

Weekend homework: SAT cpu lab (I forgot to hand out the MC homework questions to period D so you all got lucky!). That's it. Remember, it's an important grade--so do a fantastic job.

We'll start chapter 7 on Monday, and your homework Monday night will be to read chapter 7.

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Tuesday, September 30

Yo yo yo! So today in class we started our "Standardizing SAT Scores" computer lab. The worksheet provided guides you through the mathematical processes, and then you must (1 - 2 pages) summarize what your statistical findings mean to you, as you apply to different schools. This write up/lab will be due on Friday, and counts as a 45 point assignment toward your "Projects" grade. It's a big deal, but not too difficult--take advantage, and boost your grade with an A.

Tomorrow in class (Wed., Oct. 1) we'll work on a review packet for chapter 6 and go over homework. We'll have our Chapter 6 quiz on Friday; it'll consist of 12-ish multiple choice questions on the chapter and 2 AP problems (cumulative--cover anything we've studied thus far).

Thursday we'll tie up any loose ends with chapter 6 and potentially begin looking at bivariate data.

Quiz Friday.

Weekend homework: read chapter 7. Take notes if you like (there will be an open-note reading quiz on Monday).

Also, don't forget--TOMORROW'S THE AFTER SCHOOL, EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT. BE THERE!

9/24, 9/25 HW

Sorry I slacked yesterday and didn't get the homework up. It was a long, math filled afternoon and I didn't find myself at a computer--but I'll be sure to stay on top of things from here on out.

So your homework was as follows:
Wednesday: Chapter 6 Exercises, 1-11 (odd)
Thursday: Chapter 6 Exercises, 15 - 27 (odd).

Cake.

Tomorrow we'll do some analysis using standardization and SAT scores. And remember, next Wednesday is our after school/extra credit day. Be there. For real.

I found this new site--it'll be in the links section. It's an organization that looks at different statistics in the news and analyzes them mathematically. Check it out!

Friday, Sept. 19

Sooooo....today in class we finished up our first exam and began a graphing calculator exploration, looking into the effects of transformations on a set of data. This will serve as the basis for our class discussion on Monday.

Your homework for the weekend: finish the graphing calculator investigation, as well as your 2 AP Problems (PART OF YOUR TEST GRADE!!!!!!). Remember, we already did the "Flexibility Rating" problem, so don't do it again! Also, your homework Monday night will be to read chapter 6. It's a longer/tougher chapter, so I definitely recommend getting a head start if you have the time. Of course we'll have a reading quiz, and it'll be open notes if you choose to take them. I would.

Last order of business--if you're ever reading an article online or in a newspaper/magazine/whatever, and it has to do with Stats, bring it in! Or, if you see some data that's particularly interesting to you, bring it in! If it fits with what we're doing in class, I'll definitely use it as the basis for our practice problems/outline, which will make our class more relevant to current issues and hopefully even more interesting! It helps me out too!

New Link, Homework Wednesday, Sept. 17

I added a new link for an AP STat practice test; it'll be more useful as the year goes on.

Your homework for tonight is to STUDY! Remember, we have our chapter(s) 2-5 "Quest" tomorrow!

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Uploaded stuff!

I'm working on a site in conjunction with the blog--it'll be used to post our class notes and any other attachments. You can find it at:

http://classjump.com/ehhsapstat/

Or use the link on the right.

Homework and Such

Remember, the problem set assigned on Tuesday, Sept. 9 is due tomorrow! And we added 2 questions--19 and 35.

I noticed a lot of people are curious about writing answers. Check it out:
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/courses/teachers_corner/37152.html

We have our chapter(s) 2 - 5 "Quest" this Thursday, preceeded by an after-school review on Wednesday. Also, remember this Thursday is Back to School night, so tell your parents to come in and check out your classes!

And last, I'm working on adding my powerpoint notes to this site. Once I figure out how to do so, I'll get on that.

Friday, September 12, 2008

Comments

One thing--check out people's comments if they leave them. And leave your own! If you have questions, here's a good place to ask. I'll write a response ASAP, and it's then there for everyone to see. And don't worry, your post can be anonymous if you like! There's already been one good question about center vs. spread.

Some Stuff

So, the poll turned out with 8 people liking Statistics and 7 "getting there." And 0 saying they hate it! Woooo! Of course this poll had an inherent bias called voluntary response bias--only those students who actually visited the blog and felt like voting were counted as data. One may think that students who hate the class avoid this blog altogether, and thus are not included in my results. This is a topic we'll be discussing in the future!

On a non-Statistics related note, you should cop the new Gym Class Heroes album. Highly recommend it; it's rap, but with an actual band, and the songs are all over the musical spectrum. Or, if you're into the more acoustic/pop side of things, check out a guy named Eric Hutchinson. If you don't like that and you're into some R and Bish stuff, check out Estelle. That cd's hot too. And if you like really heavy stuff, check out a band called Underoath. But only if you like screaming. Last, if you get real soft/in touch with your sensitive side, get the Sara Bareilles album--and she's even better live (and coming to Hartford November 5!).

Rock the vote on the new poll.

Thursday, Sept. 11 HW

This assignment is due Tuesday. That gives you 13 questions due Tuesday and 10 due Monday. If you think about it, that's a little less than 5 questions a day. Do five questions in the morning or at lunch real quick. This assignment won't be bad at all. One key thing with AP and in the future, college, is to get work done ahead of time. Don't leave these problem sets for the night before, that's when this course becomes overwhelming. If you take it a little at a time, it's much easier to swallow.

Anyway, here's the problems:

Page 91 (Due Tuesday)
3,5,9,11,13,17, 21,23,29,33,41,43,47.................Do 41 and 43 with your calculator!

Tuesday/Wednesday September 9/10

Tuesday, Sept. 9 Homework: Complete the chapter 4 exercises (page 64) 17,19,25, 31, 39, 41.

Wednesday, Sept. 10 Homework: Complete the AP problem regarding flexibility ratings (handed out in class) as well as the two distrubution problems (handed out in class). These will be collected and graded as an "AP Project."

DUE MONDAY: Graded homework worth 10 points (that's a lot more than usual homework, so do it!)

New Link

Yo.

I added a new link that offers tutorials of various AP Stat topics; for instance, if you're one of those people unfamiliar to stem and leaf plots, this can walk you through the topic and ask a "quiz question" at the end! It's pretty incredibly helpful, so check it out!

Monday, Sept. 8 HW

Your homework for tonight is as follows: chapter 4 exercises (page 65), number 3 - 15 (odd).

Cake.

Friday, September 5, 2008

HW: Thurs, Sept 4 and Fri, Sept 5

Thursday: Complete problems 27,33,37 from chapter 3 (testing independence with contingency tables)

Friday: Read and take notes on Chapter 4. Your notes will be counted as a homework assignment...and you may have a reading quiz Monday morning.

And last, WE SCRAPPED THE CONTEXT PROJECT! I feel we've discussed this enough in class and don't want to dedicate any more time to the topic as we have much bigger and better things to discuss!

Wednesday, September 3 HW

Homework: page 36, numbers 5,7,9,11,15,19,21,23

I added a link to a good AP review site as well as to some cheap AP review guides if you're interested in buying one. Check it out son.

Labor Day Weekend HW

First off, enjoy the 3 day break.

Your homework is the following: page 16 (chapter 2) 3,5,7-12,21, 23, 25.

When we get back we'll be doing a mini-project where we look at current articles in the news; you'll need to find an article that offers some sort of data, so if you want to get a head start you may want to keep your eyes open for that.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

8/27/08

Did you really forget your homework on the first day and had to check here? Well, you had to read the "Love is Blind" article and tell me about the experimental design, probabilities in the article, and anything else you think relates to statistics. And, don't forget to read that other article about "Statistics" vs. "statistics."

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Lots of News, Ya'll.

Alright, alright--we're not going to have a summer assignment. HOWEVER, don't read too much into that. This class is still going to be strenuous, it's still going to be challenging, and still going to require you to step it up. I'm just a nice guy? You also shouldn't be surprised if I drop a quiz bomb on the first day. (Maybe some mean, median, and mode, or possibly some different types of graphs?) Enjoy your summer. That's your homework. And keep checking this blog because throughout the summer, as I further develop the course and head off to some conferences, I'll keep giving you info about the year to come.

Next point of interest: the summer camp. Some of you may have received an invitation to a 3 day summer camp in August; if you did, you should go! It's going to be lots of fun--we'll be working with students from schools around the state, so you get to meet lots of new people and hang out with the ones you already know. At the same time as you're loving life, you'll enjoy some interesting seminars, a tour of UConn, and a day of mini-lessons to help prepare you for the world of AP. This was designed to help acclimate people to AP, so if you've already been there and done that, just do what you do during those 3 days.

Happy Summer!

Yoooo! Hopefully you're all enjoying your summer to this point, whether you be traveling, making money, or just enjoying some quality time with friends. Luckily, I have good news. Your AP Stat summer assignment is in the works! Whenever you need a break from video games, eating fast food, watching movies, and whatever else you crazy kids do, you can hit up this fantastic math voyage.

Seriously though. You've all decided to step up this year; your transition to AP is like that of "going pro" in sports. As your teacher, I have made a commitment to you all to offer my utmost efforts toward your success. As a student, you've committed to putting in the necessary time and effort to succeed at a higher level. The road ahead will surely be challenging, but the rewards are great--cash, prizes, college credit, pride, and a massive high five from me after the AP test.

You are responsible for completing the soon-to-be-attached summer-assignment. The great thing about AP Stat is that we're all starting on equal footing; your algebra, geometry, and calculus knowledge will not determine your success in this course. With this first assignment, you have the opportunity to begin on excellent footing. Do it up.
