2'sday HW

Tonight, please complete the two AP problems provided in class. The links to the solutions/rubrics are below, along with scanned copies of the problems (in case you were out or lost them).

2009 (Form B) #1
  • This question deals with reading boxplots (a) and then the idea of rescaling. Use your notes to help! This should be a pretty quick question to complete.
2011 #1
  • This deals entirely with z-scores and the idea of the Normal model.
  • For (a), we have to determine if we think the distribution is Normal; remember, if something is Normal, nearly all of the data should fall within three standard deviations.
  • For (b) we are asked to calculate and interpret a z-score. Check your notes for the correct way to interpret z-scores!
  • For (c), we have to choose the overall best player (like when we discussed the "best student" example in class). To do so, we need to compare z-scores for each event.
Good luck!

Tomorrow we'll move on to our last new learning for chapter 6. Thursday we'll practice, and then Friday the weekend of testing begins! Woooo!

Quiz Tomorrow AND Homework!

Back to work! This is a HUUUUGE week for us in AP Statistics.

First off, tomorrow we will have a (very) short, multiple choice, vocab quiz (instead of a stamp). The words on the quiz are:
  • Percentile
  • Interquartile Range
  • Histogram
  • Variance
  • Standard Deviation (Sx)
  • **Note: On this quiz, you are given the word for each and you have to choose the best definition. This is different for "Histogram" and "IQR," but the definitions used are the same as on the first quiz
In addition (to preparing for this quiz), please complete the following in your textbook. (I'm checking tomorrow!)

Page 126: 27, 33, 41abc, 45

A few other important dates...
  • Unit 1 Vocabulary Test Friday (matching, definitions are from past quizzes)
    • There will not be a separate vocab quiz for chapter 6, these words will appear only on the test
  • Unit 1 Take Home Test this weekend
  • Unit 1 Test Monday

The Weekend Is Here!

We made it through another 5 day week! This weekend is going to be beautiful--do your AP Stats homework outside!

**Period B: Note the correction to your homework problems. We already did 15! (I meant 25)

This weekend, please complete the following in your textbook:
Page 126: 17, 19, 23, 25

* These questions are based on the Normal model and the 68/95/99.7 rule we discussed today. Use your notes and the picture below to help!

Enjoy the weekend and the weather! Back to work on Monday!

Thursday, September 25, 2014

Thursday HW!

Tonight, please complete the following (to be checked, for sure, tomorrow):

Page 123: 1,3,5,7,9,11, 13, 15

**You were assigned 1-11 (odd) last night, so you should really only have 2 problems for homework tonight!

For those of you with outstanding work, I need it! Tonight you have little homework, so get it done! If these are not turned in tomorrow you will receive a 0!
  • Boxplot matching (5 histograms, 5 boxplots) (Period B mainly)
  • "Plant Heights" classwork
    • Create 2 parallel boxplots, compare them (on the back of our class-example for comparing boxplots)
  • If you lost yours, both of these are uploaded under our "classroom resources"
  • Any other outstanding homework/makeup quizzes/etc!

Chapter 6!

Today we started my personal favorite of the unit, chapter 6! Woo! Lots of numbers and math!

Tomorrow (half-day) we'll continue with our notes.

The goal is to have a unit vocab test on Thursday, 10/2 and a unit test on Friday, 10/3!

Here's tonight's homework:

Page 123: 1,3,5,7,9,11

**For questions 5,7,9, to determine which is "more unusual" or which "overall performance was better," you need to find the distance from the mean, in standard deviations. To do this, take each data value, subtract the mean, and then divide by the standard deviation. Whichever number is further from 0 (or further from the mean) is "more unusual."
**Read the example at the very top ("Bacher's winning 800-m time....") of page 103 for more help.

Period B: If you did not turn in the 5 matching histograms/boxplots, I need it tomorrow! It's a classwork grade!

New Stuff Tomorrow!

Today was your first taste of an intense AP Stat assessment...as you now know, you have to study and prepare yourself so that you can not only do each problem, but do them quickly! That's half the challenge of this class!

Tomorrow we start my personal favorite chapter of the unit, chapter 6! We'll get into the bell curve and z-scores....it's going to start to look a lot more "mathy" in here....I'm pumped...

Enjoy a night of no homework. Catch up on any work you owe me. We're coming to the close of the first unit here...end strong!

See you tomorrow!

QUIZ TOMORROW...A BIG ONE!

Study, study, study, study, study, study. Then study some more. Then do your other homework. Then sleep. Then study again in the morning. Then go to class. Then study as you're walking to class and just before the bell rings. Then, get an A.

Tomorrow's quiz is on chapters 4 and 5. It also includes the chapter 5 vocab. Here's some info about the quiz...
  • This will be worth significantly more points than any past quiz. This will have a major impact on your grade.
  • There is one open-ended AP problem, where you have to:
    • Compare Boxplots
    • Create a stemplot
    • Answer an additional question comparing the two graphs
  • You will definitely have to create a boxplot, just as you did on today's groupwork
    • You will not be given the entire data set, so you cannot use your graphing calculator to easily create the boxplot
  • All additional questions are from chapters 4,5, including, but not limited to...
    • "Appropriate summary statistics" (based on the shape of a distribution)
    • Reading a boxplot/histogram
    • Using your calculator to calculate mean, standard deviation, 5 number summary
    • Describing a distribution
    • Comparing means of distributions based on shape
    • Understanding numeric summary statistics (mean, median, midrange, range, standard deviation, IQR)
    • How do outliers/extremes affect the values above?
  • Chapter 5 Vocab List (definitions in our notes and on page 88)
    • Spread (from ch 4 quiz)
    • Center (from ch 4 quiz)
    • Distribution (from ch 4 quiz)
    • Quantitative Displays (from ch 4 quiz)
    • Median
    • Mean
    • Range
    • Quartile(s)
    • Interquartile Range (IQR)
    • Percentile
    • 5 # Summary
    • Boxplot
    • Histogram
    • Mean
    • Variance
    • Standard Deviation
    • Measures of Center (mean, median, midrange, mode)
    • Measures of Spread (standard deviation, IQR, range, variance)

Weekend HW!

Nice work today! On Monday we'll wrap up our groupwork and answer any final questions/review any of chapter 5 you would like to before our big quiz on Tuesday!

This weekend, please complete the two AP problems provided in class:
2011 (Form B) #1
2004 (Form B) #5

Just like last weekend, you need to check out the rubrics and give yourself a score for each question to receive full credit! For the 2004 question you can only score part (a). The links to the rubrics are below. This homework is a nice review for our quiz! The more effort you put into doing these and grading them, the better prepared you'll be on Tuesday!

Thursday HW!

How did you do on the STAR test today? Did you see any Stats? I'm curious to see how the scores compare for those of you who took this twice!

Tonight, please complete the "reading boxplots" worksheet I passed out in class. I'm checking this tomorrow!

**I apologize, but I have a meeting on Monday afternoon. I will only be able to stay after school until about 3:00 at the latest**

Tomorrow is our last day of chapter 5! We will discuss comparing boxplots and do an AP problem in class to practice creating and comparing boxplots given some data.

On Monday we will start the last chapter of the unit, chapter 6. We will also answer any outstanding/lingering questions about boxplots and the rest of chapter 5 in preparation for our quiz on Tuesday!

Tuesday, it's quiz time. This will be our biggest/most valuable quiz thus far. It will be a combination of both the chapter 5 vocab, chapter 4, and chapter 5. Check back here on the blog for a list of exactly what's on the quiz (I'll have that up as soon as I create it!).

Last info...if you did not already show me these homeworks, or you got a 0,. you can show me any of these BY MONDAY to receive some credit (not all, but some is better than none!).

Wednesday HW/Update

Here's an update on what went down in today's class for those of you who were at the Big E. Hope you had/are having a great time!
  • Stamp problem was just like #13 from the homework, just a different context
  • I checked homework while people worked on the stamp
  • Then, we answered homework questions and wrote a description of the boxplot we started yesterday (so we filled out the bottom of that worksheet we started in class).
  • Next, we worked in groups matching some histograms to data and histograms to boxplot. This is a graded classwork assignment you'll have to make up!
  • Finally, on the back of our "nitrogen/amber/boxplot worksheet" there is an example of an ogive. We discussed how to read an ogive in class.
Tomorrow, report directly to room 121 for the STAR test! You will be given a grade solely based on your effort! Try your best, get an A tomorrow!

**Surena, Jen, and Ashley--do not do that "comparing boxplots" worksheet I gave you this morning; we did not get that far. We'll do that in class on Friday.**

Tonight's homework:
Page 91: 31, 35, 42, 47 (I plan to check this while you're doing the STAR test!)

*If you were out today and have trouble with 35 I can show you how to read an ogive if you stop by tomorrow before/after school or during study hall.*

Two'sday Homework

Tonight, please complete the following on PAGE 91 (sorry I forgot yesterday)...

Monday: 3, 5, 7, 27, 37

Tuesday: 13, 17, 19, 23, 29

Wednesday: 31, 35, 42, 47

If you didn't finish Monday's homework because there was no page number, that's a lame excuse. But you can still show me tomorrow for credit (for Monday's assignment).

If you're going to the Big E tomorrow...
  • Wednesday's homework is above.
  • Please see me in the morning (if possible) for some classwork assignments you'll have to make up!

See you all tomorrow for some more chapter 5!

Monday HW!

Back to work!

Here's an outline of the homework for the next few days--in case you'll be out or want to get ahead.

Monday: 3 (use your calculator), 5, 7, 27, 37

Tuesday: 13, 17, 19, 23, 29

Wednesday: 31, 35, 42, 47
Please make sure you get tonight's textbook problems done! I'll be here after school today, Wednesday, and Thursday if you need any help. Our goal is to have our chapter 5 quiz AND our vocab quiz on Friday. If necessary, it will be pushed back to Monday (at the latest). This will be our first "big quiz," and will last the whole period! Be proactive and come after to study!

See you all tomorrow for some more Stats!

It's the Weekend!

We made it through our first five day week!

This weekend, please complete the two AP problems provided in class. You must also use the links below to score your responses.  If you lost the questions, you can find them below...

2007 (Form B) #1
2012 #3 (part a only)

A few comments on your homework--this applies to any homework!...
  • To receive full credit I expect detailed responses, written in complete sentences, just as if you were taking the AP exam.
  • To receive full credit you must also SCORE your response based on the scoring rubric (link below)
  • If you're answers are short/lazy/half-hearted (as deemed by me), you will NOT receive credit! Put in the effort, I only gave you two questions!
  • It might be a good idea to try to time yourself...maybe 15 minutes per question...to practice for the AP exam!
  • For question 2012 #3 you must use comparative language. You must COMPARE SOCS, not write two separate descriptions. If you don't use comparative language (higher, lower, more, less, etc.) and context, you would score an "I" (incorrect) on this question.
  • You can find the answers and the grading rubrics online!
    • I expect you to try these on your own, and then check out the answers online.
    • Make any notes/comments/additions/corrections to your answer so you know the correct/most thorough way to answer these questions!
    • Check out the correct solution, but also check out how the question is scored!
    • If you copy the answers directly from the rubric you will not receive any credit
  • Links to scoring rubrics:

Enjoy!

In addition, if you'd like to get ahead, Monday's homework is listed below:

Vocab Quiz Tomorrow! (And it's Friday!)

Vocab quiz tomorrow! Study!

This quiz has 11 questions; the last two questions show you a histogram, and then ask you to select the option that best describes the shape of the histogram. Below is a list of possible vocabulary words for our quiz:
  • Distribution
  • Quantitative Displays (What displays are for quantitative data? Histogram, boxplot, stemplot, dotplot, timeplot, ogive)
  • Center
  • Spread
  • Mean
  • Median
  • Spread (and, what are the measures of spread? range, IQR, standard deviation)
  • Skewed Left/Skewed Right
  • Outlier
  • Range
  • Contingency/Two-Way Table (from chapter 3!)
  • Relative (from chapter 3!)
Your only homework is to study! Do it! Make some flash cards, review, and come ready to work. After our quiz we'll get back into our chapter 5 notes and we'll have some AP problems for homework this weekend!

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

QUIZ TOMORROW!

Study! Tomorrow we have our chapter 4 quiz; you will have about 15 minutes to complete each of the following:
  1. Create a histogram given a data set (use your calculator!) (5 points)
  2. Describe the distribution shown in the histogram. (5 points)
  3. 4 questions about reading histograms (like yesterday's stamp problem) (4 points)
Use the assignment we worked on in groups to study....it's pretty similar to the quiz!

Also, for homework tonight, I asked you to describe the histogram that we didn't get to in class, either the Old Faithful Eruptions or Customer Service Times. (this is called forcing you to study, hopefully).

Here are the homework answers, so you know if you're doing this correctly (the stuff in parentheses definitely adds to our answer, but may not be necessary):

The distribution of customer service times is unimodal and skewed right with 2 possible high outliers. (One customer service time was around 2 hours!). Most (or the majority of) service times are "shorter," an last at most 25 minutes. The median service time is roughly between 0 and 12.5 minutes, and the range of service times is about 125 minutes.

The distribution of Old Faithful eruption durations (times) is bimodal and somewhat symmetric. There are no apparent outliers. Eruption times are either long or short--they are usually 4-5 minutes long or 1.5-2.5 minutes long.
The median duration is around 3.5 to 4 minutes, and the range of eruption times about 4 minutes (5.5-1.5)

And lastly, I may not have checked homework today (the book problems from yesterday's post) due to time...so I'll get to that tomorrow. Meaning, if you didn't have it done today, you have a second chance...

Tuesday HW

The following homework problems will be checked tomorrow! (period B--spend your time getting a head start on these!):

Page 65: 3, 5,13, 25, 35

*For 35, a back-to-back stemplot means you should use one side of the "stem" for the U.S. models and one side for the "Other" models. (One data set on the left, one on the right).

Enjoy! Check your answers in the back of the book so that you know you're doing this correctly!

Monday, September 8, 2014

Monday HW!

Period B: Does the data on the worksheet I gave you look familiar? Turns out I'm a moron and we already used this in class...so I blew it, and you got lucky. Don't even bother doing this worksheet, because we made a stemplot and a histogram of this data in class already.

The following homework problems will be checked on Wednesday (period B--spend your time getting a head start on these!):

Page 65: 3, 5,13, 25, 35

*For 35, a back-to-back stemplot means you should use one side of the "stem" for the U.S. models and one side for the "Other" models. (One data set on the left, one on the right).

Get a head start on your homework while you watch the Giants debut! See you all tomorrow!

Tuesday HW

Back to work!

Now that we've gotten our Pre-Test out of the way, it's time to finish up chapter 3 (tomorrow) and start doing some math!

Tonight, please complete the "Analyzing Categorical Data" worksheet provided in class. If you lost it (or never got it, or are absent) you can find it under our classroom resources link. I'm definitely checking this homework!

Enjoy your afternoon and the heat! I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Did you listen to the "Stat Rap" yet? :)
