Too'sday Homework

Tonight, please complete the "Powerball and Nickels" worksheet provided in class! This is a short homework...and I'm checking! So do it! The questions are listed below (in case you lost yours or were absent).

Tomorrow in class we'll finally finish our chapter 14 notes...then, we'll do some multiple choice practice. We'll have our chapter 14 vocab quiz on Thursday or Friday (still can't decide), and then we'll be done with chapter 14! Wooo!

See you all tomorrow! Enjoy your Tuesday!

Powerball and Nickels Homework Questions:

  • The diameter of a nickel is .8125 inches
  • The distance from New York to Los Angeles is 2443.79 miles

1.)    Suppose we are going to line up nickels (in a straight line) directly from NY to LA. How many nickels will we need? (There are 5,280 feet in a mile).

  • Let’s assume one of those nickels has a big red X on it, and is randomly placed in the long nickel line from NY to LA.
  • Let’s also assume you are in a plane that flies along the long nickel line, and your goal is to jump out of the plane (with a parachute)and land with your big toe on the nickel that has the big red X.

2.)    What is the probability (assuming you will definitely land on a nickel) that you land on the nickel with the red x?

  • POWERBALL is a lottery where you must match 5 white balls and 1 red “powerball” to win the jackpot
    • The white balls are numbered 1 – 59
    • The “powerball” is numbered 1 – 35

3.)    What is the probability you match one of the white balls in the Powerball lotto?

4.)    What is the probability you match the red ball?

5.)    What is the probability you win the Powerball?

6.)    Compare your answers to (2) and (7). What is more likely—landing on the nickel with the red X or winning the powerball?
